Tall. Check.
Immobile. Check.
Smart. Check.
Named Tom. Check.

Yeah that's a Parcells/Belichick/McDaniels style QB.

Kiper seemed to like him when they were talking about the Day 2 QBs earlier this morning, all the physical tools, just hasn't put it together yet. Here is Josh's developmental QB.

Because if McD doesn't win and show something this year future picks wont matter to him.

socalorado
04-26-2009, 02:06 PM
This is actually a solid pick.
Ive watched alot of him.
He has the physical tools to be a good pro, hes just really raw and under coached.
http://walterfootball.com/college/FresnoState_logo.gif Tom Brandstater, Fresno State
Height: 6-5. Weight: 220.
Projected 40 Time: 4.77.
Combine 40 Time: 4.95.
Hand Size: 9 1/2.
Projected Round (2009): 6-7.
Brandstater's strengths are his size and his strong arm. When Brandstater has good mechanics and can step into his throws he can be very accurate and effective. When given time Brandstater can be an effective QB. Brandstater's big strong arm gives him the opportunity to make big plays downfield.
Brandstater's biggest weakness is his inconsistency. At times he displays great mechanics and he delivers the ball well, but a lot of the times he is erratic and short arms his throws. He is very bad under pressure and gets very erratic and rushes his throws.

I like it.

He played in a Run first offense. Was supposed to be good but as Kiper said, he never put it together. Possibly because Fresno State sucked this last year.

I think he could be our QB of the future tbh. Seriously, this guy could be good.

i am going to want to slit my wrists after saying this, but i agree with Kiper. the guy is raw, but he throws a good ball, is somewhat mobile, can throw ok on the run and has decent arm strength. his main problem is he is raw and is streaky

please let him take number 6, then I can rip off Cutler's nameplate and have a usable jersey.

The four and half minute clip shows he can run a shotgun, a QB sneak, rolls out, not afraid to run when under pressure, quick judgement, looks for the second receiver, set up on his feet and can place the ball well.

im actually really happy with this pick. His scouting report reads like Bradys when he came out of Michigan. I was hoping we would get him a developmental guy. Im happy for this pick considering what Micky D has done with Cassell and Brady.

I live 45 miles from Fresno State, and I like watching them play and think that Pat Hill is a good coach. Whoever said that Brandstater is under coached doesn't know much. Fresno State does a good job of coaching their QBs. Also, it will be a miracle if he plays at an acceptable level in the pros. The kid just doesn't get it. I don't know if it is just that he is slow in reading a defense or what but I couldn't wait for him to graduate so that the underclassmen could get their chance. Pat Hill's one shortfall is that he is too loyal to some of his choices for starters and is reluctant to make changes. Now if you want a RB next year Ryan Mathews from Fresno State would be a good choice.

Its kind of nice having a 6'5" Qb for a change. He looks pretty versataille for a tall guy, throws on the run, seemms pretty accurate. I believe there is a big no pun intended advantage for being that tall. get less balls knocked down, can see over the LOS, Perfect project for McD, he's got 1/2 year getter done !

I went to Fresno State, lived in Fresno for many years....Since David Carr left Pat Hill has really turned his offense into a run offense. I can't say I saw great things from Tom while at Fresno state, but the guy did show flashes. Keep in mind these numbers while deciding if McD can make something out of him.

Tom Brady Stats in his final 13 games:
214/350 for 2636 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions

Tom Brandstater in his final 13 games:
221/371 for 2664 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions

Kind of scary, isn't it?

Similar...but yet...different. Brady played in the bigger conference, and competed against much more superior talent. But other than that, your close?

Agreed, but then compare the talent each had and I think it equals out. Not saying Tom is going to be Tom, but I do believe that McD can pick out QB's like Shanny could pick RB's.

I agree and would rather have him as our qb than not. But even Jay mentioned his rookie year after someone asked him about 2 balls getting batted down at the LOS. He said give me a break, Im not 6'5", those guys are tall out there. So thats where I was coming from, it wasnt a knock on JC.

And that didn't get tom any respect at draft time so you really never know about a player until he shows it on the field.

Why? McDaniels wasn't involved in the selection of either of Brady or Cassell. There is no indication that he can find gems in the late rounds.

I'm sure Brandstater would have enjoyed having the likes of Anthony Thomas, Tai Streets, Jeff Backus, Steve Hutchinson, David Terrell to name a few on his team.

I'd compare Matt Cassel's college stats but, oh wait, yeah, he doesn't have any.

I'm just saying, Tom Brandstater fits a mold but didn't do great in college. He may turn out to be nothing, he may turn out to be great. He has the measurables, started 3 years at FS, is smart and had a very good 2007 season. 2008 wasn't a great year, but it was no worse than Terrific Tom's either.

I don't hate the guy, but odds are stacked against him being a productive pro QB. I wouldn't be surprised if he was PS player this season.

Saw this kid live @ SJ State (I have season tickets...I know, whooptie doo) he threw a lot of short passes and some real ugly picks. The offense was designed to run ( I know the run the spread most of the time) so he never really got a rhythm. Was a leader though.

Actually, hand size means something with QBs. Alex Smith is called "Mr. Tiny Hands" for a reason.
