What do you guys think. Seems like we can't go wrong with that name. Other choices are Beckham, Madden, and Racer.
Any suggestions on a middle name.
Thanks!

If you name him Madden I'd puke.
If you live in Colorado, Elway might be tough to live with.

I'd say do it.
Elway Jesus ....
Elway Davis
Elway Sharpe
Elway Mike
Elway Ed
or go with other glory days
Elway Roy
Elway Helton
I named my dog Elway makes me happy. I find it more amusing that I live in Baltimore and he takes a dump on it everyday though. But Elway Davis sounds like a great name for a Human.
You should steal Costanza's idea and call him Seven.

I'm getting a dog in October, (my first), and I'm naming him/her Elway. Oh, and I named my mom's Chi Hua Hua Tyrone after Tyrone Braxton because he was born 3 days after Super Bowl XXXII.
But dogs only live for a decade or so.
I mean, imagine if you're a Packer and a Brett Favre fan. You never, ever envisioned he would say **** you to your franchise like he did. Dude even retired and he still screwed you over. But now your son is named Brett or his middle name is Favre, or something. And I won't even mention Bills fans that may have named their kid O.J. (er I guess I just did).
Hope that helps.

Why wouldn't he live a normal life? I can't believe that people would tease him for having the name Elway. When he is a child kids won't know that John Elway was a great QB in Denver and when he is in his teens the name John Elway will be less known as well as that will be 15 years from now.

The boy's name Alexander \a-lexa-nder, alex(an)-der\ is pronounced al-ek-ZAN-der. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "man's defender, warrior". From the Latin form of the Greek name Alexandros. The name was probably coined originally as a title of the goddess Hera, consort of Zeus. Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) conquered and ruled the greater part of the known world before his death at the age of 33. History describes him as a man of high physical courage, impulsive energy, and fervid imagination. It was a royal name in Scotland. Alec and Zander are modern offshoots. Sandy is a Scottish pet form; Alessandro is an Italian form; Alexandre and Alixandre are French. See also Lexer. I love the sentiment, it's just as a first name... Elway sounds a bit more like a pet's name. But, that's just the way I hear it. Doesn't mean I'm right.
Also depends on your last name, of course. We went with a simpler name for our daughter because our last name is a little tough to spell-pronounce. So, we tried to make her life a little easier in that way.
Just keep in mind, with a name like Elway or Beckham, the kid is going to have to have a full conversation about it every time he introduces himself the rest of his life. Just something to consider.

Read my last post on this. It's not so much about conservative as it is about trying to consider what the child's life would be like with such a name. I personally think a lot of modern-day parents choose names as novelties rather than something pleasant or meaningful.
I have a friend who named his daughter a sort of traditional Irish name. (He's not Irish.) But, he's a musician and has sort of an Irish fetish for the culture, etc. Not only is it an uncommon name, it's spelled very oddly.
So, it's great for him to talk about at cocktail parties... but his little girl has to go through life re-spelling her name to every person she meets, that's if they can even even pronounce it.

I think you are missing the point here. You can like all kind of different names. But like someone else said in this thread you have to think of the kid first. I don't care if you love Elway, I can promise you your child will be teased for the first name Elway whether or not you live in North Dakota. Its a guarantee. Your job is to give your child the best opportunity he has to succeed. Don't handicap him with a name that could cause him social anxiety for the rest of his life. Naming him after someone famous is only asking for trouble. Judging by the posters on this thread, I think you can see where this could end up.
Your child's name doesn't have to be unique and other worldly. It should be socially acceptable. Allow his actions and personality to be amazing, and don't let his name get in the way.

I tend to disagree with your post but perhaps it is because I am from N.Dakota. I really don't remember making fun of anyone because of there first name and kids aren't going to know who the Hell Elway even was when they are 8 years old...not that it matters because I'm not really choosing the name because idolize John Elway or anything. I was more looking at it because we thought it was unique. I have enjoyed the discussion so far am shocked that people are against the name Madden so much.

It really doesn't matter the name the more I think about it. Kids find a way to pick on people for all kinds or reasons. Name, freckles, weight, glasses, braces, hair color, ethnicity. Your kid will tease and be teased in school regardless...probably even in college for some.

Parents who want to do this stuff should just change their own name to whatever they are enamored with and give the child a more typical name.

Ask her how she likes Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. I guess it depends on how off the wall you want to get. I would say just think about the child. Might not be a problem at all but conversely it could create some terrible situations.
I don't find that River or Scout is close to moon unit. You are losing all credibility to me within this thread.
I am glad however that I generated it because at least it is eliminating all of the names my wife liked.
I don't get it..my friends son name is Kingston. Other friends we know have Kaylnn,Boston,Casem,Emma,Trevor,Abby.
I can only think of one Jake as a common name that my kids know.

I met a guy names Hans out where I work. His parents are Swedish I believe. He was like 6'4" and 280 lbs. so I'm not sure to many people picked on him for it. Plus that is probably a really common name where his parents hail from.

Ok, so what if you finally come up with a name that you believe to be 'unique' then a few years down the road, you start seeing people with that name? What then? Are you going to hit up a message board to re name your kid?
It just seems to me that you and your wife are searching for the impossible. Putting a name to your kid that nobody else will ever have. That's just my take so far.

I am sort of curious to find out how old the people on this board are who are against unique names. As far as your quote goes..why woud having an intriguing name make you more likely to be uninteresting. If anything else it will likely make you more interesting and more likely to be noticed.
Just thought of another friend whose childrens names are Jordan and Talon. Are those to bizzarre for you as well?

Oh no..not true at all..in fact I liked the name Everett for quite some time before we agreed on others more. I merely posted the poll here because I was curious what Broncos fans would think of the name Elway. I half expected about 10 people to say that they had named their kid that. I have to say that I am completely shocked at how conservative people are for first names.

I'm 33 with three kids. Austin, Nicholas, and Katelyn. I didn't name my daughter since her mother didn't make me aware that she had a child by me until my daughter was 9 years old. Both of my boys, my wife and I together without the help of an internet message board tried to come up with unique names. At the time, both of my boys were suppose to be girls until they were born. So we didn't really have time to come up with boy unique names. So we hit up a child naming book. My oldest son toke my middle name for his, which is also my dads first name which is James. My wife and I gave our youngest son the middle name of Reid.
So there you have it. Anything else you want to know. Should we help pick out their favorite colors too?

I don't get your post..you likely go on this board to rant and rave about Broncos things all the time that you can't control. It is just the fun of doing it.
The opinions made about the names I listed will have very little to determine what we actually choose. But I was curious what people would think. It is just meant to be in good fun. My wife is getting bent out of shape because I don't think she realizes how big of "Dicks" people can be on here. I really wasn't expecting it on this discussion but I am aware that it happens since I have seen people argue over draft picks worse than this.
Again..we like bold names for our children. Some can call them crazy or irresponsible and that is fine. Everybody has a reason why they name their child something. Some want to go with family signifigance. We have already done that with middle names. Personally I feel sorry for the child who is named..whatever whatever jr. or whatever whatever the third. Unless of course they are in line to be king of something.

I have a cousin named Reid. I don't think there is anything wrong with asking about names on a message board either. What if someone said I always liked the name such and such. By your own account people named Bob and Ron are quickly forgotten, but the Apple's and Warlock's of the world are really memorable. So I guess we're in agreement then?
I would describe Warlock as an unusual name. Apple not as much. I imagine at one point the name Summer was an unusual name for a girl. Now I wouldn't imagine a person on here would scoff at it. I guess it just takes time for people to catch up with trends. When there are Beckhams all over the name won't seem as idiotic to you I imagine.

This in from the wife again:
"why not give the kid an advantage to stand out?? it's not like you send your kid to school or he goes out for a sports team and the advice to give him is " just try your best to be boring and average. we wouldn't want you to stand out or excel in any way."
What you name your kid will mean absolutely ****-all in whether or not they stand out. Frank, Dweezil, or Moon Unit? Which name stands out the most? Depends on your point of view. Frank is known for over thirty years of excellence in music. Dweezil and Moon Unit are known as the kids frank gave weird names to (talking about the Zappas, of course). Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with unusual names. Hell, I've got a daughter named Jadzia (yes, you just mispronounced it), but it's just a name. Don't let yourself get caught up in some mystical bull**** belief that your kids name will have any affect on their abilities or drive. If you want your kids to stand out, help them do their absolute best at whatever they want to do and quit obsessing over giving them the most unusual name you can think of.

I agree and I didn't know the name moon unit was actually somebody's name. I don't agree with you as I think a name should make you stand out in life. Others name there kids from the bible. Others pass along family names. It is each a choice based on your up bringing and what you are passionate about. My wife and I both agree that we do not enjoy common names.
I also disagree with you to an extent. A unique first name clearly seperates a person from a common name on some levels.
Will it make them better in anything they do in life...No...why would any name do that? But I also don't think that it will make them any worse off either.
Again..this was sort of meant to be a fun poll to see how many people liked the name Elway. Just kind of fell apart in the first twenty posts or so. Oh Well.

How so? What will that person benefit from it? Will they land a dream job over someone else with slightly better credintials simply because their name is 'kinda cool'? etc.
I mean I have no problem with you wanting to name your child something that is unique. But you are giving the impression that you and your wife are wanting to do this with the belief that it will give your kid a leg up on other people with common names.

I don't agree with you at all. I wonder if there is a study on it. But i would guess that names stand out. Nope..I'm not. I was merely pointing out to earlier posters that childrens names now days are far less common than they were ten years ago. I then tried to think of any children I could with regular names and I really couldn't. I agree that would be dumb and we are not thinking that. When we sat down and looked through baby book names we didn't say..man we better name him something unusual so that he can invent a spaceship that can take us to Mars or name him Elway so that he will for sure be a QB. I mean Elways' own son couldn't even excel as a QB.
I am not sure why that opinion has been formulated during the discussions.
But to me... it is dumb that some think that having a bold/unique name makes you likely to be made fun of. Or that I am on drugs or something. Or that D'Bricksahw Ferguson isn't an awesome name for an OT. It really is. The name Turd Ferguson however would not.

Yes Bob.
You remember that clown that interviewed a couple months ago? What was his name? Dweeble? Drizzle?
No, Bob. His name was Dweezle. I remember 'cause it sounded so damned strange.
So what if you get remembered for your name. I can remember my 10th grade girlfriend (Trish) and several other "generically" named people from high school for what they meant in my life. I can also remember Anastasia, because of her name. I don't remember a single other thing about her, but I remember her name. So does that make her special? No.

I do vividly remember one very unique name. A guy I knew in the army. His momma did him the dis-service of naming him Syphilis (yes, like the venereal disease) Johnson. He told me that she thought it was the most beautiful word she'd ever heard but mercifully had never heard it's meaning (he never told her). I'll bet he never meets another person with the same name!
If you want a unique name, try an eastern European name and intentionally mispronounce it. Then, if your kid gets teased too much or simply grows to despise it, he/she can start pronouncing it correctly and have a whoel new name without the hassle of a legal name change.

No, no. My apologies. I was simply trying to relate an amusing story that this thread reminded me of. The guy really was named after VD.
Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to be insulting.
Ben
I didn't take it as an insult. Just most of the posts have been..why don't you just name him rubberband or Optimus Prime. I thought you were giving another example of a unique name. Yes that name is unique I guess but I don't associate it with the choices we have selected. Since i know the meaning of it that would be a highly unusual selection.
I'm not sure why people are so concerned about a childs name resulting in them being teased. Every child is teased. If not for name..then something else.
Alright..thanks for all the comments and posts. I appreciate the input both negative and positive. Time to focus on the NFL draft again and why I dislike Josh McDaniels.
How about Josh?

It's kind of lame to name a kid after your favorite sports star, and Elway doesn't sound like a good first name. Neither does Madden. I kind of like racer, but the kid would have to be the coolest on the playground to live up to it.

Have a cousin named Josh. To plain and boring for my taste.
Think of your child...not yourself for a moment. Why not name him tinkerbell???

See..that is why I don't think he will get the name Elway because my wife shares the same sentiment. She thinks it is kind of lame to name him after John Elway. She will be happy to know you like Racer. That is her second favorite I think.
We both really like last names as first names. Just a preference I guess.
How about Evenrude Opperude
Would be a great name for a high motor guy.

I don't get it? What is the reference to tinkerbell from?
Thanks for the insightful post though.
Best thread of the year so far!
I can totally see how people can be so divided on some grey Cutler\Josh issues here on the Mane when a simple name can cause so much angst.
93% of the people in this thread are idiots. Don't take it personal Robbie.
Names are very important!
How about...Oz-weep-aye?

Your kid will hate you a lot less if you don't name him like a dog. Just saying.

True...but I don't think Madden or Racer is a dog name. Cookie is a dog name.
Lassie, Rover, Apollo, Brutus, Achilles...dog names. Elway is probably debateable..but it likely wasn't a dogs name 20 years ago and probably isn't much of a dogs name outside of CO.

Let me get this straight. You want "unique names", but are content to just use the last names of celebrities as first names?

I guess I just don't see why you'd want to go from unique names (Angelina & London) to absolutely retarded "names" (Elway & Racer). Angelina and London are actual NAMES. You know, that you'd name someone. Elway is someone's last name. The only actual name you have listed is Madden. So do that one. (Even though i dislike John Madden)

Madison for a boy? I don't know. Thats one of the top two girl names from a few years ago along with Ashley. That's where ashleymadison.com came from.
Not sure why everyone thinks Madden is from John Madden...that is weird to me. I don't even think my wife has any idea who John Madden is.
She told me today she still really likes Scout,River, and Ryhse. I think Rhyse is to girly also.

Like Reese Witherspoon. Only spelled Rhyse or some sort of spelling like that. I don't like it. It is a girly name.

Sounds tuff. I liked Bex but the wife wanted something longer and that is where Becham came from. So I can still call him Bex for short.

In my line of work I see every stupid trendy kid name that comes along. Some of them are absolutely rediculous. Now, if a parent gives a kid a half normal sounding name they always have to **** it up by giving them some stupid spelling. It's not about you. It's about the child and the **** they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives because their parents were half witted inbreds. Good luck with that.
I saw a reality show with a lady on it named "Aquanetta". WTF? For those of you who don't know "Aqua Net" is a hairspray, not a child's name.
End of rant...

Aquanetta doesn't equal Rhyse. It is defitnatley a touchy subject I have found out. To me aquanetta is extreme and to others Beckham is extreme. So it is defitnately a choice, individuality, upbringing, religous, spiritual, ethnicity, etc... thing.
I still don't by into the name resulting in the kid having a difficult time. Unless the name is way out there like the Syphillis one. I can see that.

1) Don't do a stupid spelling of a name. Have something a teacher can ****ing pronounce, Jesus.
2) Reece is a significantly more normal of a name then anything else you've mentioned, but I agree with you that it's more of a girl's name.
3) Were you suggesting that Vlad would be a tough name for a kid?

Tough as in the kids name sounds tough. Like Hulk Hogan. That kind of tough.
