McCain facing 2010 primary
Social conservatives tolerated John McCain as the party's nominee, but never trusted him, and he now appears to be facing a serious primary from the right in Arizona next year.
Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the movement to clamp down on illegal immigration, will be announcing tomorrow at an event on the Mexican border that he's resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary.
From a forthcoming release:
"John McCain has failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation's borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness," Simcox said. "He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation's border security hostage to his amnesty schemes. Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation's problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough."
McCain was forced to abandon his own immigration reform legislation during last year's Republican Primary, a move that may have cost him substantial Hispanic support to which his record could have given him access.
So he's basically getting it from both sides on this one.
Simcox, with a national base and a high profile on the right, is well positioned to give McCain a serious local headache. He'll find some allies among the conservatives who recently took over the Arizona Republican Party from McCain's allies, and he has a national fundraising base.
UPDATE: Here's his campaign website, which includes a clear effort not to be a single-issue immigration candidate.

Napolitano was considered a stong candidate to oppose McCain in the 2010
general, until she took the job as Secretary of Homeland Security. Napolitano
is quite popular in Arizona and may well have beaten McCain

McCain blew it with me anyways. Anyone who picks Palin to be his running mate not smart enough IMO to be a US Senator. The fact he tried to sell me on that fake christian freak of a women was the day I knew I wouldn't be voting Republican for President for first time in a long time.
I decided to write in the person I wanted. Newt Gingrich...............J/K I didn't.

Newt is trying to position himself for the next election working on key committees that matter to the Democrats. He is trying to develop support from moderates and is actively making changes behind the scenes.
Palin is an idiot. I wish people would stop pretending she is relevant.
Republicans are targeting Napalitano but unlike Pelosi she is actually fairly sharp. It takes a while to get used to having stalkers in the press.

Just STFU.
Wall Street created the worst ticket since...I donno.
The point is the ticket was so bad it was obviously a conspirasy.
Obama refused American money, accepting slush money.
It's so brutally obvious how wall street and the MNC's run things now it's not even funny.

sharp? U mean that she is being asked to step down for her remarks on Canada on 9/11 and our returning vets being in ultra conservative weapons fringe groups? I wouldnt trust her to be a shoe in if she did step down and run for the senate. I think this is a great topic for TJ as the "Friends for McCain has googled it and found the Mane here and are now advertising in the middle of the thread. I cant stand McCain even though I voted for him back in the 1998 primary against Bush.

I don't think you can overlook or take for granted that in this country, we do have radical conservative fringe groups and militia's.
There are returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan who believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction, and instead of changing the direction of the country at the ballot box....they may join and take up arms with group(s) that may want to create mayhem and violence.
One only needs to look at Gulf War I Vet "Timothy McViegh" who's radical extremist political ideas lead to the Oklahoma City Bombing and killing over 160 American citizens.
Homeland Security needs to ID these groups as "American Born and Raised Terrorist" and try to apprehend and arrest the next "Timothy McVeigh" plain and simple.

rasta, McVeigh wasnt in a group. He was in on it with Nichols. Only thing he had on him (after the fact) was that he read and followed the Turner Diaries. The report makes it out that they are going to join an already formed group or make one. There was no proof of such after Desert Storm. FBI already taking down license plate numbers from cars parked near TAX revolt (TEA) parties.

Palin was purely a McCain move. Bush essentially wanted to crush McCain when he was so vocal against torture and the RNC put the boot to him. They were not too thrilled about their own guy and the straight talk express was an empty bus in January.
RNC wanted him to saddle up with someone else but McCain wanted Palin. He wanted to put Obama on the defensive and having his own "Hillary" and pickup "blue dog democrats and Hillary supporters. It was a deeply cynical move but it was successful to the extent it got him back in the race.
I am surprised how bitter Mitt Romney was over the whole experience. I hear he's pretty much done with politics. Lieberman has been quiet as a church mouse.
I think that McCain is better in local politics than national. He is a likable guy when he does not have to defend his very real personality flaws.
