I don't know about you guys, but the NHL playoffs (whether my Kings are in it or not) is my favorite time of the year (other than Bronco football season of course).

Some very interesting matchups, and some of them are very old rivalries (Bruins vs Canadiens). Other matchups I like are Sharks vs Ducks, Pens vs Flyers, Flames vs Hawks.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 San Jose Sharks vs. #8 Anaheim Ducks
(season series: Sharks 4-2)

#2 Detroit Red Wings vs. #7 Columbus Blue Jackets
(season series: Red Wings 3-2-1)

#3 Vancouver Canucks vs. #6 St. Louis Blues
(season series: 2-2)

#4 Chicago Blackhawks vs. #5 Calgary Flames
(season series: Blackhawks 4-0)

EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 Boston Bruins vs. #8 Montreal Canadiens
(season series: Bruins 5-0-1)

#2 Washington Capitals vs. #7 New York Rangers
(season series: Capitals 3-0-1)

#3 New Jersey Devils vs. #6 Carolina Hurricanes
(season series: Hurricanes 3-1)

#4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #5 Philadelphia Flyers
(season series: 3-3)

My predictions:

West
Sharks in 5
Red Wings in 6
Canucks in 7
Flames in 7 (Wonder who KillerIcon picks for this one, both teams are his favorite)

East
Canadiens in 6
Capitals in 4
Devils in 6
Penguins in 7 ( This series is such a toss up, I really feel 50/50 on this one.)

The quest for Lord Stanley begins on Wednesday.

Well on paper things shook out nicely for my Canucks, winning the division and getting matched up with the Blues (wouldn't want to face the Ducks right now, or the Jackets with Steve Mason on fire). That being said, I expect to see Vigneault get hideously outcoached and the Canucks play down to their competition and give them every chance to win.

Haha, um, go Canucks? (I really don't like the coach).

I put experience over talent in that series. Flames have a bunch of veterans with a lot of playoff experience, I'll take that over a young squad 90 percent of the time...the other 10 percent being if you have anything of a young squad that resembles the Oilers of the early 80s.

I'm pretty excited for what should be a Sharks vs Wings WCF.

I have no idea who wins that one...I've always picked the Sharks in the past 3-4 years but they seem to not be able to get over the hump. I'll give a small edge to the Defending champs.

Absolutely don't care for the NHL unless it involves the Avs.
I will admit the hockey playoff atmosphere is pretty amazing, but I just don't care about other teams and it isn't enjoyable unless my team is in it.

Maybe so...however it was a seven game series last year, at that time Montreal was #1 and Boston was #8. Montreal won.

Oldest rivalry in the game, one of the oldest rivalries in sports. Anything can happen. I have a feeling Montreal pulls it off.

Like you said:

Bruins were the 8th seed then and Montreal was the #1. They have gone in completely opposite directions in the last year and the Bruins are 5-0-1 against them since.....I just don't see it. They literally haven't lost to them in a year, and now they're all of a sudden going to lose 4 out of the next 6 to them?

Montreal has everything going against it...it was a gut pick.

Boston hasn't looked too impressive to me down the stretch. They recently beat the Canadians 5-4 at home but lost to the Senators and Buffalo. It's going to be a tight series.

Also a little known fact...Boston hasn't won a playoff series since 1999.

Socalorado, he is a misguided Kings fan who cant bare to see the Ducks get into the playoffs every year as he cooks up the "wait until next year" speech of all the young players. Even after the trade deadline of the Ducks picking up players under 26, he still calls them Dinosaurs. Those players put on one hell of a streak to end the year. From 12th to a win away from the 6th seed. I dont like the chances of playing the Sharks, but they have played them well at the end. Here is to one of the best power play forwards growing that beard again!

You proved my point wonderfully. He's as good as both the Avs goalies...who suck...but with a worse team. Switch teams and Peter or Andrew would be in the exact same situation as Jose: In the playoffs despite him, not because of him. Hell Peter probably would've won more games for them than Jose

That has got to kill ya! That Scotty the Dinosaur puts the Ducks in the driver's seat and takes away home ice for at least one game. No worse than a split and cant ask for more than that. Ducks challenged the Sharks pretty much all night and that helped even in the Power Play Kills. Rob Niedenmeyer will be getting bench minutes if he keeps giving (3) power plays to one of the best teams in PPs. They came out tonight fired up. Seems since the trade and then the trade deadline passing with Niedenmeyer, Scott and Pronger still on the team has made this a 12th seed to a scary 8th seed. Long break to Sunday.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind it if the Dinosaurs booted the Sharks from the Playoffs. I hate Roenick and I hate Rob Blake...two of the biggest douchebags in the NHL.

That being said, it's only game 1. While the Ducks played good, Hiller in particular was really good, the Sharks will rebound for game 2. Ducks are going to have play a better game on Sunday to take complete control of the series. The Sharks have been in this spot before, they lost to the Flames in the first game of the series in the 2008 playoffs. We all know what happened there.

It's going to be interesting to see how things play out.

5 veterans? You have 6-8 guys that are in the 30 or older range. Plus Gaymu Salami is about 40 yrs old. Giggy isn't getting any younger, and his gigantic contract is going to be a problem for you guys. Then you have Pronger and Neidermayer who aren't going to be able to log in 25-30 minutes of ice time much longer. Once those two guys retire, you are ****ed.

You do have Getzlaf going for you and that's about it.

Socalorodo,

he has no clue. ALF is also the one who stated that Bobby Ryan is a bust in November. I guess not everyone, like Crosby, can jump to the NHL so quick and make an impact. Ryan picked #2 behind Crosby had the comparisons to judge so quickly on a young player from those who just want to hate. Now, Ryan is top 3 in votes for rookie of the year. Add to the fact that he only played a portion of the season. Did ALF comment on the trades that shipped out older for guys under 26? I didnt see it. But the icing on the cake is the bolded line about Getzlaf are only thing going for us. Yeah, because Perry, Ryan, Hiller are a bunch of non scorers. Add Beuchemin to the back line and we are set. Whitney is going to be strong. In fact, all guys in the trade have shown that they belong and have contributed much more than when they were on their former teams. Next season we will have the "wait until next year" quote from Kings' fans again. At least make the playoffs.

When the Wings play like they did in the 2nd and 3rd, it is almost impossible to do anything, they are so methodical and the way they dominate the puck is just insane. Aside from a few (very few) times when Columbus managed a turnover high on the ice, the Wings pushed them to the boards and only allowed shots from the point. That was a demonstration of team defense.

The only team I am really worried about meeting is the Devils.

Indeed I did, I still think he is. I'd like to see what he does next year. He hasn't established himself yet like most other people in that SAME draft have. Carey Price, Jack Johnson, Anze Kopitar etc.

Now, Ryan is top 3 in votes for rookie of the year.

That's laughable, considering others in that same draft class already have a couple years in the NHL under their belts.

Did ALF comment on the trades that shipped out older for guys under 26?

Yes I did, and I was right. Kunitz is almost a PPG player with the Pens.

I thought the Penguins made out like bandits. Penguins got a winger for Crosby/Malkin AND they got a prospect out of it.

Meanwhile the Dinosaurs traded away a 26 yr old left winger in Kunitz and picked up Whitney at high salary.

If you're a Flyers fan you've got to wonder what the hell Mike Knuble is thinking. You don't take a penalty like that 190 feet away from your own net in overtime. Not a veteran player. Then a rookie makes a rookie mistake.

I'm sure everyone knew this game was over when the second penalty was called. I hate seeing an overtime game won on a 5-on-3, but Knuble and Giroux deserved their penalties and it cost Philly the game.

Shoulda never got to OT. Unless of course you are the NHL refs and call a bogus penalty with 4 to play. I knew all along they were itching to give them a PP late in the game. I just never thought they'd call what they called. I'd understand if they called it that way all game. They were trying to take heads off all game and NOTHING was called. I understand if you break a stick with a slash, but WTF was that on Carter.

I hear you bro... It was a flat out joke. It's all good though. At least the league made it loud and clear as to who's moving on. Game one Fixburgh killed us. Flat out. No whining there. They beat us in every aspect. Game 2, the Flyers were the better team and got it taken from them. Sure, there are those who will say, "Well, the Flyers had a chance to kill the PP and win the game". That's understandable as well. however, to make a phantom call when both teams were allowed to take 6 strides AND leave their feet to try to put someone through the boards, it's just SCREAMS, give Fixburgh every chance, whether legit or phantom.

Hehe the Flyers fans meltdowns are almost as amusing as the gameday meltdowns. Flyers got a gift when they didn't give the Pens a penalty shot from the thrown stick. So they got one back on the phantom hooking call. Flyers lost it though with 2 stupid penalties in OT.

I agree --As a veteran, Knuble's penalty was inexcusable --Giroux, he's a ROOK so I'll give him a break. But that call on Carter--that was bush league--Staal clearly grabbed Carter's stick--and timing is everything my friend. Mop-top's stick throwing occurred in the 1st period I think and was the call missed--absolutely--but these refs had 40 additional minutes to give the Pens a makeup call and they waited until the 36th minute to do so--YUCK.

Player of the series so far: Valteri Filpula.

Aside from completely humiliating 3 blue coats today Datsyuk has been pretty quiet, Zetterberg has been good but not better than expected, Hossa is showing just how underrated he has been as a 2-way guy and the Wings defense is playing the way you expect. The Flip line with Hudler, Samuelson and Filpula have taken it to the Blue coats hard and Filpula seems to be playing with some sort of super confidence.

The quality of hockey has been lacking in this years playoffs compared to last year.

In the East there are 2 decent series, the Bruins - Habs series and the Battle of Pennsylvania. The Caps have been too weak and the New Jersey series is just not interesting.

In the West it is even worse, San Jose, St Louis and Columbus haven't been competitive enough to make games of it. Only Calgary and Chicago have really put on a show so far and neither team really looks like they could get by Vancouver, Anaheim or Detroit.

Speaking of Detroit, you know you are good when the weak link of your team is a goalie who is ranked 1 (GAA, Save %, shutouts) or 2 (wins) in every single category.

why do even try putting "bulletin board" material for the Mane. So, ALF has Ryan flopping in a 2nd year drought, sees him laughable for being a possible rookie of the year because others have been "established" last year (Ryan had playing time in the NHL last season) and therefore is too "old" from the draft to be considered a possible star in the NHL, and trading Kunitz for Whitney and another player (who was called up for the playoffs) was a bad move. Alf, werent you commenting all year long on the dinosaurs on the back line of Pronger and Niedenmeyer? They trade a forward to the EAST for a young, highly drafted, 26 year old to give some experience and youth to a much needed line. Maybe you are just pissed that they kept both dinosaurs and are helping the Ducks extend the playoffs while you are looking at the standings that you were a bottom dweller once again. yeah i think you guys are a close second for getting raped by the refs, and not that you are getting less problems but they havent cost you any games yet. where as phantom calls cost us the tying goal and 2 men short in overtime the winning goal. Yet those very same actions when done by penguins during regulation are ok. Even the automatic "slash and break a stick" goes uncalled.

Where the **** did I say that? I was just telling you Dinosaur fans not to suck each others d!cks just yet over Ryan. If he can be a consistent 30 goal scorer, I'd say you have a player on your hands. Until then As far as ROY crap goes, Ryan has spent quite a bit of time in the AHL.

Boy you are going to be sorely disappointed when you find out that Whitney isn't logging in 25 minutes per game. Whitney is a puck moving defenseman, won't be a shut down guy like Pronger or logging in minutes like Neids. He's a good depth guy, at 4 mill? No.

My Blues were the best team in the NHL over the last 45 games of the season, to go from the 2nd worst team in the league, to getting the 6 seed in the West.

Literally had more points thasn any other team over the final 45 games of the season. What they did was unprecedented in NHL history from what I can remember.

They were the 3rd worst team in the NHL last season, and were the 2nd worst in the league as recent as February, and they stormed back to get the 6 seed.

They lost their 2 30 minute per game Defensemen in Erik Johnson and Eric Brewer and they lost Paul Kariya for the whole year as well. They were decimated by injuries and still made the playoffs, so I was buzzing around with delusions of playoff hope.

But getting swept by Vancouver kills the buzz I had.

I think the Blues are next years Blackhawks though. Just SILLY amounts of young talent in St Louis right now. There should be 4-5 years of real good hockey coming in St Louis. Can't wait for next year.

Not a hard prediction when you're up 3-1. The Flyers are 0-20 when trailing 3-1 in a series all time. For whatever reason, the Pens are a terrible matchup for the Flyers. I think all around, the Flyers are better. You guys have the 2 "best" players in the series, but we are the deeper team both offensively (7 players with 25 goals or more), and that doesn't include Briere who is a 25 goal scorer when healthy. Giroux looks like he is a safe bet for 20-30 goals, if not more next season. I think our D is slightly better as well. I think Fleury is a better GT then Biron but other then that, I can't figure out why the Pens give us fits. Both teams are young and VERY talented. I guess we will HAVE to get used to each other. I think we will see each other in the playoffs, 8 or 9 times in the next 10 years.

What's to love about Roenick who is a gigantic Douchebag, he came to training camp for the Kings about 15 pounds overweight and out of shape. He then has the balls to blame the freaking equipment manager for effing up his skates the whole season! He retires without a ring would be great. Karma at it's finest.

As for Flake, he just plays for money. He was never interested in helping out the Kings. I know he rejected trades last season that would have sent him to the Avalanche or the Sharks for a first round pick and conditional 3rd. **** Flake.

Both of them fit in just great with that team. The last 4 games they have displayed ZERO heart. Absolutely none...it's pathetic. I'm glad the Lakers were on tonight.

dont be so sure. Ducks very first playoff series in franchise history was an upset on the Wings and a few years ago it happened again. I welcomed Luc back, the guy was all class and great person. He still works for the Kings as President of Business operations. He's always wanted to help the organization however he can.

Flake on the other hand does not, he is just in it for the money and didn't help us out when we needed him to. So he can go **** himself.
