ASU QB Elway leaving football
Jack Elway to remain at Arizona State as a student

The Arizona Republic
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Elway is leaving the Arizona State football program but remaining in school as a student.

"He's just tired of football and wants to do something else with his life," ASU coach Dennis Erickson said Monday. "He made a decision, and we all understand it. He would have played here eventually."

Elway, son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, was the only scholarship quarterback in the 2008 recruiting class out of Cherry Creek (Colo.) High School. He redshirted last season and was among five quarterbacks competing for the starting job vacated by Rudy Carpenter.
Now the quarterback competition is down to four: senior Danny Sullivan, sophomores Samson Szakacsy and Chasen Stangel and true freshman Brock Osweiler.

Scottsdale Saguaro High School quarterback Cole Rarrick plans to walk-on at ASU in the fall.

ASU already is well into recruiting for the class of 2010. Quarterback prospects Peter Thomas of Valhalla High School in El Cajon, Calif., and Kevin Spain of Paradise Valley High were on campus last weekend for Junior Day and a scrimmage in which Elway did not participate.

More power to him...Good luck young man in whatever YOU choose to do in life!!

And I hope young Elway finds whatever he is chasing as well ...

As someone who grew up under the spotlight of what his father did before him but no way to the degree this kid has went through it is good for him to pick a dream that is his and go for it ... If that dream was or wasn't football , so be it ...

Trade all of our newly acquired draft picks for him immediately!

Do it!

Not overly surprising. He was only a mid level QB prospect out of high school...

what did he have no shot of cracking starting lineup?

As a college prospect, he would have never gotten the Division 1 offers had his name been Jack Smith instead of Jack Elway.

I think it was more of wishful thinking then reality ... So people thought it would be cool IF he was good enough ... I wouldn't call it a waste of time to think something , unless you are someone who while you think you can't do anything else which i can see how that would be trouble ....

And to top it off you waste your precious time by making a silly post to tell people others was wasting time ... Ironic ... and way funnier ...

What I posted on two CU boards-

John loves that boy and knows the pressure he was feeling...

I met John on he slopes of Beaver Creek. I was the ten year old kid who idolized him and knew he was on my mountain somewhere and had a card and sharpie in my pass holder. I found him and Janet and he was shocked that I asked him to sign a FB card on top of that mountain. He made me a deal that he would sign when he got down. He held true to his word as well as the 30-40 kids who also gathered to get his sig after finding out he was coming down.

John is a great guy and understands the pressure his kid has by having that same 5 letter name.

And in response to the star rating a-holes who asked if CU should have offered him-

No.

Kid wanted his own path. His Dad loves him and will still support him and I guarantee you Dad understands it.

Elway Jr. at CU with the (Hansen, Mahnke, Ewing are a f-ing joke!!!) fans would have been an absolute mess...

Those same people now clamor for Hansen to start and both safeties look good...

God help that kid from some of our own....

Good luck kid.... Your dad will forever be my idol.

Jack Elway is no John Elway. Just like none of Michael Jordan's son will ever play in the NBA, although both of Jordan's son are playing college ball.

Both Elway's and Jordan's fathers were never great Athletes either! Hell Jordan's father was only 5'8 and his mother is 5'4! How the the hell did Jordan get to 6'6?? Elway's dad only played small level college football as a QB! Where did Elway get all his talent??

Moral of this story is star athletes Dads or parents do not produce star athlete children all the time.

Gifted athletes only come around once in a lifetime. After all they are GIFTS!

Yeah. It is kind of sad. Walter Payton and many others have proved that they were special. Kids, not so much. We still go through it any time an all-time great has a kid...

Sounds like my thread about Elway being a potential novelty draft down the road was full of fail lol.

It is sad that he might feel the pressure to feel the pressure...

John Elway is our Lord and Savior... but we were quickly alerted to the otherside. Don Beebe. Praise you or **** you? We are left to wither.

If that's his decision, good for him. He'll have to make his own destiny at some point.

I honestly feel bad for him. I'm not sure he had the opportunity to really enjoy the game in it's purest form when everyone must have been weighing him against his father at every game of his life.

Now, now...you KNOW that next Elway is out there. Why, the NFL is littered with them! The schools are full of them! Fans cling and hope!

I hear Jack is officially "blackballed" in the family album...;D

You make an excellent point. Special players tend to come from a combination of factors, not 'breeding'. It's cute to think they replicate but it never happens that way. Even in a family of athletes, one is usually dominant and the other is mid level to good. Oh, the humanity and complexity!]

Interestingly enough, Jack Sr. said John got most of his athleticism from his mother, altho I don't know if she played any sports.

So, Bronco Buff...seem to remember you being all up in arms about CU not offering young Elway while pissing and moaning about picking up Tyler Hansen.

I don't understand this sentence. How many high schools have more than one scholarship QB in one recruiting class?
