View Full Version : Latest word on who is playing what positions?

This matter of losing the starting QB has been quite a distraction in recent weeks.

Does anyone know what the latest word is on who will play what positions? For example, do they have an idea who will play NT? What about Will? What about the outside LBs?

I remember hearing Fields, as it is now, is going to be at NT. Is Thomas going to get a look there? Is Doom for sure going to be the Jack? Is Williams for sure going to be on the inside? What about the other LB positions? Is it open competition for all of them?

Thanks for posting that. I really hope thats not accurate. Its kind of seems like a bleak year for NTs. It seems like Raji will be coming into the league with a strike against him in the drug program. I kind of wish we'd target Cody next year.

When I look at that Offense I get the feeling that they they can make it work. The Defense? I hope we draft a lot of D this year. DT, LB, Safety would be nice.

Maybe Im just easy to please because of last year, but I think our safety position is a lot better this year. I kind of like the mix of Barrett trying to crack the starting lineup and Hill/Dawkins infront of him.

LB is really enigmatic. Im optimistic about Doom playing rush LB. Im kind of hoping Larsen is closer to starting than what that depth chart indicates. Boss Bailey as a starter makes me nervous, especially with both he and Williams playing inside.

Id like to take someone like Scott, Taylor, or Hill to play NT/DE. And then, as I said, next year go after Mount Cody.

Spencer Larsen is not even listed on the LB depth chart, and they are expecting Andra Davis to play outside. Ok, sure. I'd imagine Marcus Thomas will start for us somewhere. Right now we have a glut of inside linebackers, no NT and no one that has played outside LB in a 3-4. And lets not forget that the only bright spot on our D towards the end of the season (Woodyard) quite literally has no possible future in the 3-4. It's going to be a mess for a while unless the draft class is amazing and/or Nolan is a genius.

I was reading that in san francisco they determined that Fields should start at NT instead of Sopoanga (?) because one of his coaches filmed them coming off the line and determined that Fields' had the fastest hands coming off the line of scrimmage. Kind of interesting. They want him to be able to get in the Cs chest.

Edit:

I found what I was referencing:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ninerinsider/detail?blogid=45&entry_id=26708

D-Line Discussion
Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula put a camera at the line of scrimmage during the last minicamp to better assess his players. The camera allows Tomsula to see who has the best jump and the quickest hands. A sprinters jump allows a pass rusher to get up field and into the back field in a flash. Quick hands allow a nose tackle to get his hands on the center right after the snap, when the center only has one hand to fend off the hard-charging nose.

The quickest pair of hands on the line might belong to Ron Fields and is a major reason he's switching from defensive end to nose tackle. Isaac Sopoaga will play more defensive end next year, because he's so quick off the ball. At 330 pounds, Sopoaga is just as quick at the snap as Tully Banta-Cain, who weighs 270. The switch of Fields to nose tackle and Sopoaga to defensive end could make a difference this year in the all-important line play.

I love the addition of Dawkins but I think we need to get a young guy in here. I can't imagine using anything higher than a second on one though.

I'm feeling good about Doom but it's actually the ILB that I'm worried about. I don't think DJ is instinctual enough to play ILB. I really didn't care for him at Mike, maybe changing up his responsibilities in a 3-4 will help him out, I don't know. Not sold on Bailey either.

Hmmm...Larsen beats out Bailey and a rookie pushes DJ back outside?

NT is still a big ??

I think DJ would be ok @ ILB, but it depends who he's paired with in the middle... Like say..... Maualuga, perhaps?

After '07, he really did look lost out there without Wilson. He definitely isn't your typical 3-4 OLB. I don't see him as the type that can rush the passer, win matchups against an offensive tackle, etc. He's just about got the size for ILB in a 3-4, put him next to a guy like Maualuga who eats, sleeps, breathes and ****s football, I think he'd do ok..

I think Broncos will draft another big DT, but that really DT as long as the dude is big and physical will do fine. Everything I hear is that Fields a pretty stout 315, he may do avg. I think avg for Broncos defense is a huge step up at this point.

We just need to bigger and he helps us there. Get someone like Brace in 2nd round and we might be decent there.

I'm more worried about finding real outside 3-4 linebackers. Doom may be able, Moss I say no way, Boss Bailey? give me a break no friggin way he's too small.

I still say Broncos will have to play a lot of 4-3, if not where do you play woodyard and Da Boss?

NT is my only real concern...we have to get NTs...

i don't see one on our roster...Fields was a 3rd string NT for SAN FRANCISCO...that doesn't exactly fill me with excitement for him as a starting NT for us...

as for that depth chart...it isn't accurate, but heck even the depth chart on broncos.com won't be accurate right now...it's all everyone's best guess...

obvious no-goes would be Andra Davis at OLB...plus the ommission of Larsen...

Montrose's Projected Pre-Draft Depth Chart
QB: Kyle Orton, Chris Simms
Could go either way right now although I expect Orton to beat out Simms. I figure a mid-late round QB is drafted to develop at the #3 spot.

HB: Correll Buckhalter, JJ Arrington, LaMont Jordan, Ryan Torain, Selvin Young
FB: Peyton Hillis, Andrew Pinnock
McDaniels stated he likes Hillis, specifically out of singleback sets (which he thrived out of last season). Per McDaniels' statements, we're likely to see all of the backs rotating. If all are healthy, I can see Hillis as our singleback (and fullback in short yardage), Buckhalter the shotgun back, Arrington the 3rd down back and Jordan the power back.

FL: Jabar Gaffney, Chad Jackson
SE: Brandon Marshall, Matt Willis
SL: Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, Jayson Foster
The 3-wide set is the base formation in McDaniels' offense. I'd like to see one more Split End brought in, especially with a Marshall suspension likely.

TE: Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffler, Jeb Putzier, Adam Bergen
I still wouldn't be shocked if Scheffler is moved before the draft. However, if Marshall is suspended he could be a nice fill-in split wide.

LT: Ryan Clady, Tyler Polumbus
LG: Ben Hamilton, Scott Young, Mitch Erickson
C: Casey Wiegmann, Kory Lichtensteiger
RG: Chris Kuper, Pat Murray, Matt McChesney
RT: Ryan Harris, Clint Oldenburg
No major changes on the OL. Paxson is a reserve guard which may be why he was signed.

DE: Marcus Thomas, Kenny Peterson, Tim Crowder
NT: Ronald Fields, Mathias Askew, J'Vonne Parker
DE: Carlton Powell, Nic Clemons, Ryan McBean
Fields is a true NT while Powell and Thomas are the closest things we have to competent 5-techniques. McDaniels specifically mentioned Askew as well. Powell and Thomas could both get looks at NT depending on how the draft shakes out. Easily the worst unit on the team right now.

WOLB: Elvis Dumervil, Darrell Reid, Jarvis Moss
WILB: DJ Williams, Wesley Woodyard
SILB: Andra Davis, Spencer Larsen, Mario Haggan
SOLB: Boss Bailey, Louis Green
McDaniels specifically mentioned Dumervil and Reid as intriguing pass rushers off the edge. Moss likely to get a look there as well and he or Reid/Dumervil could be used as a Joker. Not sure where Woodyard falls into all of this, presently I list him as DJ's backup but if he's bulked up he could be used elsewhere.

CB: Champ Bailey, Josh Bell
CB: Andre' Goodman, Jack Williams, Rashod Moulton
FS: Renaldo Hill, Vernon Fox, Herena-Daze Jones
SS: Brian Dawkins, Josh Barrett
This one's pretty easy. I wouldn't be shocked if Barrett pushes Hill however. I recall reading that Hill has done well as a NB and if paired with a veteran like Dawkins, Barrett may be able to handle the role that he's physically gifted to play.

K: Matt Prater
P: Brett Kern
DS: Lonie Paxson
I still think we pickup a kicker as a UDFA.

Montrose,

If you think that Barrett is going to be pushing Hill, why do you have him listed as the back up SS?

Drek
04-07-2009, 09:52 AM
Offensively our lineup looks pretty predictable, though I think all the McDaniels doubters will be surprised when he makes Hillis the primary back, especially in our single back sets (which we'll run more often than not).

Defensively it gets tricky. First you have to think about the scheme we're going to play. Most assume it'll be a 3-4, but when Nolan first took the job he said repeatedly he'd do what best utilized the players, and shortly after taking it when he was on his final Sirius appearance he talked at length about the Cards' defense and how its been a turnover machine in the playoffs.

I think he's seen something in that hybrid he finds intriguing.

So to that end here's what I'm expecting.

At DB we're pretty much a set in stone veteran rotation, Champ at 1, Andre Goodman at 2, Dawkins and Hill at the safeties. Josh Bell will be the nickel until we draft another CB this year, and Jack Williams the 4th string. Josh Barrett will get every shot to be the #3 safety.

The front seven is pretty intertwined. I'm expecting three styles of fronts. The 3-4, the 4-3, and the 5-2.

In the 3-4 we'll look like this:
LDE: Kenny Peterson
NT: Ron Fields
RDE: Marcus Thomas
WOLB: Dumervil/Moss
WILB: Wes Woodyard
SILB: Larsen or Davis
SOLB: DJ

In the 4-3 I'm expecting this:
LDE: Dumervil/Moss
NT: Fields/Powell
UT: Marcus Thomas
RDE: Peterson, Reid, or Crowder
WOLB: Woodyard
MLB: Larsen or Davis
SOLB: DJ

In the 5-2:
LDE: Dumervil/Moss
LDT: Peterson/Powell
NT: Fields/Powell
RDT: Thomas/Powell
RDE: Reid, Crowder
LB: DJ and Woodyard

This will be far from set in stone as Nolan will want to be able to send out a mix of personell and have them shift on the fly as needed between the three alignments. So we'll probably see more than a few times where DJ looks like the MLB in a 4-3, only to have the strong side backer (probably played by Reid, Crowder, Doom, or Moss) step up and put his hand on the line, or just bull rush from a stand up position off the snap. We'll probably also see times where it looks like a 3-4 with two pass rushers at the OLB spots, only to see the same thing. Or a 4-3 with Reid and Dumervil on the ends, then before the snap a pass rushing OLB steps up and the line shifts over to go 5-2. And vice versa, with DEs dropping off into 3-4 OLB assignments.

I'm expecting a very dynamic, unpredictable defense that will frequently be rushing more than just four guys, regardless of the situation, but it'll be damn hard to know which guys are coming.

The big weaknesses I see on this is how questionable our pass rushing DE/OLB types are (lot of talent but not much proven other than Doom as a stereotypical DE) and our interior DL.

I think if we can get him at #12 the coaching staff would be excstatic to land BJ Raji, as he projects to play the hybrid NT role better than pretty much anyone since Haloti Ngata. We'll then look to add an offensive piece with the next pick (Wells or Moreno probably, but I wouldn't rule out Alex Mack). The 2nd will see us look for the best OLB prospect we can get, I wouldn't be surprised if that was Clint Sintim as he's a very reliable producer who knows the 3-4. Then in the 3rd we'll shore up the secondary with some youth and if we haven't added an interior OL yet we'll look to do so here (hopefully Wood out of Louisville).

HB: Correll Buckhalter, JJ Arrington, LaMont Jordan, Ryan Torain, Selvin Young
FB: Peyton Hillis, Andrew Pinnock
McDaniels stated he likes Hillis, specifically out of singleback sets (which he thrived out of last season). Per McDaniels' statements, we're likely to see all of the backs rotating. If all are healthy, I can see Hillis as our singleback (and fullback in short yardage), Buckhalter the shotgun back, Arrington the 3rd down back and Jordan the power back.

FL: Jabar Gaffney, Chad Jackson
SE: Brandon Marshall, Matt Willis
SL: Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, Jayson Foster
The 3-wide set is the base formation in McDaniels' offense. I'd like to see one more Split End brought in, especially with a Marshall suspension likely.

TE: Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffler, Jeb Putzier, Adam Bergen
I still wouldn't be shocked if Scheffler is moved before the draft. However, if Marshall is suspended he could be a nice fill-in split wide.

LT: Ryan Clady, Tyler Polumbus
LG: Ben Hamilton, Scott Young, Mitch Erickson
C: Casey Wiegmann, Kory Lichtensteiger
RG: Chris Kuper, Pat Murray, Matt McChesney
RT: Ryan Harris, Clint Oldenburg
No major changes on the OL. Paxson is a reserve guard which may be why he was signed.

DE: Marcus Thomas, Kenny Peterson, Tim Crowder
NT: Ronald Fields, Mathias Askew, J'Vonne Parker
DE: Carlton Powell, Nic Clemons, Ryan McBean
Fields is a true NT while Powell and Thomas are the closest things we have to competent 5-techniques. McDaniels specifically mentioned Askew as well. Powell and Thomas could both get looks at NT depending on how the draft shakes out. Easily the worst unit on the team right now.

WOLB: Elvis Dumervil, Darrell Reid, Jarvis Moss
WILB: DJ Williams, Wesley Woodyard
SILB: Andra Davis, Spencer Larsen, Mario Haggan
SOLB: Boss Bailey, Louis Green
McDaniels specifically mentioned Dumervil and Reid as intriguing pass rushers off the edge. Moss likely to get a look there as well and he or Reid/Dumervil could be used as a Joker. Not sure where Woodyard falls into all of this, presently I list him as DJ's backup but if he's bulked up he could be used elsewhere.

CB: Champ Bailey, Josh Bell
CB: Andre' Goodman, Jack Williams, Rashod Moulton
FS: Renaldo Hill, Vernon Fox, Herena-Daze Jones
SS: Brian Dawkins, Josh Barrett
This one's pretty easy. I wouldn't be shocked if Barrett pushes Hill however. I recall reading that Hill has done well as a NB and if paired with a veteran like Dawkins, Barrett may be able to handle the role that he's physically gifted to play.

K: Matt Prater
P: Brett Kern
DS: Lonie Paxson
I still think we pickup a kicker as a UDFA.

nice breakdown but i'm not sure Boss Bailey is in the plans...

isn't he recovering from injury?...if so, when he recovers, he'll be released...

Cross your fingers. He's just not tough enough for what we need.

What about DE? Can Thomas and Powell really make the transition?? I'm not sold.

Not at the Nose, but perhaps as DE's Particularly Thomas, I think he could be a beast at DE...:strong:

This whole region of that depth chart is really scary.
Still lots of work to be done there.

I'm surprised they're listing Marcus Thomas at NT instead of DE. I agree with Longhorn, his skills set looks to me like a born 3-4 DE. I like Kenny Peterson a lot, too - similar player to MT. Funny he's listed as a starter, but maybe going to high school with the boss has its perks I guess.

hargrove, I think eddie mac said Boss' cap hit is tiny this year, so based on that, I think they'll look at him in camp at least ... strange they list him as SILB, they probably meant SOLB. And I agree with icon - Andra Davis is an ILB all the way.

Drek, great post. Your post to McD's ears ... Hillis for starter!

I wish they'd use "strong" and "weak" instead of left and right ...

Left and right confuses me ... hmmm...

Clint Oldenberg is on our roster? We have become the destination of choice for CU and CSU offensive tackles ... Polumbus, Oldenberg now, Pears and Lepsis recently. Tom Ashworth is a free agent, let's go get him.

our line backing core is horrible.... WHy is Boss even there? And why the hell do we have Eddie Royal returning kick offs and punts?? Please only Punts,,, he will eb so worn out if he does both,, remember we get scored on a lot. Put a fast WR back there like chad jackson or something. and Elvis as a LB????????? Put Woodyard there,,, elvis just wants to sack, so put him in a position to get to the QB.... you suck yahoo

Montrose,

If you think that Barrett is going to be pushing Hill, why do you have him listed as the back up SS?

I think that's where he'd be listed today and where he'll be going into camp. I just think that throughout those practices, he'll be given an opportunity to at least push Hill for playing time.

I believe they picked up his option on 3/3. He's a versatile guy who might be the only player currently on the roster with the skill set to play Nolan's SOLB position.

Great post montrose, but you really think we need another WR??!!

When your base offense is a 3WR set and you use tons of 4WR and 5WR sets (with four and five actual receivers, not RB's and TE's split out as Shanahan did), you need plenty of good ones. Throw in Marshall's impending suspension and I think one more WR would be a great help.

There was an interview with one of the coaches (think it was McDaniels?) where he said that Darrell Reid would be playing an outside linebacker spot. From what I've heard (personally have seen nothing of him), it's beyond his athletic ability.

If our D turnaround is based on Darrell Reid we are seriously ****ed in the ass.

I don't know how you can look at that depth chart and think we're not going DE and LB in the 1st round.

Yet...we'll end up getting Sanchez or some ****.

What if we drafted a long snapper in the first round? Maybe Paxson can groom the long snapper of the future...

Where were you in February and March?? This has been a given for months. Both he and Moss move to OLB positions. Which DO rush. And thusly Yahoo doesn't suck, just your ability to stay up to date
