WASHINGTON (AP) - Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Champion Series.
The current system "leaves nearly half of all the teams in college football at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to qualifying for the millions of dollars paid out every year," the Senate Judiciary's subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights said in a statement Wednesday announcing the hearings.

Under the BCS, some conferences get automatic bids to participate in series, while others do not.

Obama and some members of Congress favor a playoff-type system to determine the national champion. The BCS features a championship game between the two top teams in the BCS standings, based on two polls and six computer ratings.

Well if it look like collusion to somehow make it so certain teams have no chance regardless of record, then it could fall into the anti-trust arena and be subjected to the Senate.

If you can't see their responsibility in this matter I think you are being shortsighted.

There is big money in being number 1, to exclude based on an unfair formula, then just saying the almighty computer decides, is a joke IMO.

Amen. These guys collectively struggle with personality disorder, addiction to power, are chronic liers, incestual relationships and now, appearently have ADHD. Almost everything they touch they break.

They can take my job, my 401K, and my liberties, but when they start screwing around with sports, that's when I flip out....;)

Id imagine if they had their way they would actually find a way to come up with something worse than the BCS. So please Nancy, leave this ****ed up stupid ass system alone.

Ah excuse me but Iraq is no longer a war.....its an occupation. And yes, we gotta come up with a better system with the BCS. A good place to start would be to bring young-new blood into the BCS and retire those older BCS members 55-70 years old who are stubborn and rigid in their ways. The fans are not getting a true champion with the way the BCS is set up now. An 8 to 16 team playoff system is what's needed and the bowl games could be used as the playoff sites.

The BCS need to fire the purist and hire the visionaries.

So let college football fix the problem...congress should do its jobs and, you know, run this country

Who knows, maybe they're just taking baby steps fix a "small" issue before they work on the big boy issues

Naw I don't buy it! College football can't fix the BCS ripoff so long as you have old men in their 60's and 70's out of touch with reality and who have the inability to think outside the box. It will take visionary planning and change inorder for College football to have a playoff system that would rival March Madness!! Hell the BCS starting next year could have a 4 team playoff system.

It needs to start with a 4 team playoff. Do that for about 5 years. Then you can go to 8 or even better 16 but do it without the "BCS conference winner gets an automatic bid" bs.

Hell on second thought I think Congress needs to spend the next year and a half focusing solely on this issue. Keep em distracted so they can put the bailouts and massive gov't spending on the backburner for awhile.

You can't just add a 16 team playoff. You'd have to shorten the regular season as it is.

It always amuses me to see this about college football fans and the bowl games. Have you ever paid to go to a bowl game? It's expensive. Your average student couldn't pay to go to 3 bowl games let alone one national championship game. The bowl games can be for fans, but really they are for students and alumni. There are only a handful of teams that draw a huge fan base outside on the students and alumni. OU, OSU, Texas, Tenn, Miami, ND, USC, and Fla. You'd have trouble filling the seats.
