The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.
President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.
Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.
He bowled a 129, the president said.
"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.
It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.
When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.
Great Obama maybe next time you can make fun of little kids that have been burnt or something. That's all disabled Americans need is the President making fun of them for trying sports. Hey look how funny those kids look trying to do sports, let's mock them on national TV,
Good job Obama way to make disabled people feel good.
Hey but at least it wasn't his intention to disparage kids that take part in Special Olympics. I'm sure it's not his intention to ruin the country either but that will give us little solace when it happens.

Guess he didn't have a teleprompter available for the whole appearance. I refused to watch, because it's ridiculous having the prez on the leno show when the country is in chaos and the fed is printing $1 Trillion to pump into the system. ugh.

The dude is PRESIDENT now. It's time for him to put on big boy pants and display some poise, dignity, and good judgment. This was not one of those moments. Bush spent 8 years acting like a hybrid frat boy/dustin hoffman in rain man. This guy has, in 50 days, made Bush look like Winston Friggin' Churchill.
Just more examples of the on-the-job training this moron requires, but isn't getting.

At the same time, it wasn't a good thing for the president to say. He should probably apologize for the comment, and be done with it. We will see. IMO Obama made poor choices for his cabinet. Picking a bunch of tax cheats while you are giving away taxpayer money to big banks is not going to sit well with Americans.

Obama's approval equal to or better than predecessor Bush
17 Mar 2009, 1309 hrs IST, PTI
WASHINGTON: At 61 per cent the approval rating of US President Barack Obama is better than his predecessors George W Bush and Bill Clinton had in
mid-March of their first years of their administration, according to a latest Gallup poll.
In a statement, Gallup said yesterday that Obama is holding his own compared to the two Presidents who came before him, despite some decline in his approval rating since his inauguration on January 20.
Gallup's mid-March job approval rating for Bush, measured March 9-11, 2001, was 58 per cent, with 29 per cent disapproval.
Gallup's March 12-14, 1993, approval rating for Clinton was 53 per cent, with 34 per cent disapproval.
Both of these approval ratings are lower than Obama's current 61 per cent. Bush's disapproval rating in mid-March 2001 was about the same as Obama's is now (28 per cent), while Clinton's disapproval rating was significantly higher, it said.
Obama's first Gallup job approval rating, based on a three-day rolling average of interviewing conducted January 21-23, was 68 per cent, with 12 per cent disapproval and 21 per cent with no opinion.

Bush didn't have meeting on Al Queda until Sept 10, 2001. He was asleep at the wheel. 9/11 very well might have been averted had he taken Richard Clarke more seriously. A quicker response from the feds to Katrina probably would have greatly reduced the damage to the city and saved lives. In any case, calling Obama a "disaster" because of some freakin' DVDs and a special Olympics joke is beyond stupid.

To your first two points, he was asleep at the wheel perhaps - so were countless other swinging *****. I still doubt that the tragedy would have been prevented though. Special Olympics Champ to Barack: Bring it On!
Posted Mar 20th 2009 9:57AM by TMZ Staff
A bowling phenom in the Special Olympics has just challenged Prez Barack Obama to a White House roll-off ... and he'll probably kick Barack's butt.
Barack Obama
Kolan McConiughey, a Special Olympics competitor who has bowled three perfect 300 games, tells TMZ that the Prez has to score a lot higher than 129 to beat him. Kolan says he bowls an average of 266.
Play VideoKolan -- who works at a grocery store in Ann Arbor, Mich. -- said he'd love to go to the White House to beat Barack on his own lane. Kolan said, "He's cool, but he can't beat me."
We posed the challenge to the White House. They said "no comment."

At the same time, it wasn't a good thing for the president to say. He should probably apologize for the comment, and be done with it. I just hope he doesn't talk about how involved and committed he is to the special Olympics, because he wouldn't have make the gaffe if it was something that was truly close to his heart.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, at the White House Friday for a meeting on
infrastructure spending, defended President Obama for his politically incorrect
joke about the Special Olympics on the Jay Leno Show Thursday night.
"I know, because of conversations I've had with the president about Special
Olympics... I know where his heart is," said the Republican governor, a
weightlifting coach for Special Olympics since 1979 whose mother-in-law,
Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founded the group. "He loves Special Olympics
and he will do everything he can to help Special Olympics."
Schwarzenegger added, "Every one of us sometimes makes a mistake, right.
Something comes out of your mouth and you say, 'Oh, I wish I wouldn't have
said that.' "
Obama 's gaffe came while joking with Leno about practicing in the White
House bowling lanes. He said he had improved his game, but still had only
managed to hit a high score of 129.
"It was like the Special Olympics or something," the president said with a grin.
The joke drew some laughs from the crowd, but it was seen as offensive by
many. On the flight back to Washington Thursday night, a White House
spokesman insisted the president meant no offense to the group or its 200
million athletes with intellectual disabilities. Even before the taped interview aired,
Obama called Special Olympics chairman Tim Shriver from Air Force
One to apologize for the remark.
"He expressed his disappointment and he apologized in a way that was very
moving. He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population,"
Shriver said Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America." He added that the
president wants to invite Special Olympic athletes over to the White House
to bowl or play basketball.

Yeah...the difference between those two is like the difference between the liberal media (especially the likes of all of the youth-oriented media: comedy shows, news magazine shows, "political analysis' shows aka spin doctor shows, etc) inundating the national consciousness with criticisms of Bush's pronunciation, laugh style, personality, etc. and the medias ignorance of Baracks faux pas.

Dems claim to be sensitive to the needs of the less fortunate. I guess that handicapped children and their families just deserve to be discarded and scoffed at.
What a jerk.

Eh, I'm surprised he didn't tell us what he had for lunch today. You know, those fascinating posts he makes about his exciting life.

Screwing one's wife's sister could certainly feel like a bad joke.

Where did you get the idea Obama was trying to alienate his base?
Bronco Bob

Even his supporters are seeing he doesn't appear to really know what he's doing.
And this opinion is based on what? That Republicans are starting to act partisan again?
As is the case for most presidents, there are sharp partisan differences in Obama's job approval rating.
Among Republicans, Obama's average approval for the past week (March 9-15) is 26%,
among independents it is 59%, and among his fellow Democrats, 91%.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/116845/Obama-Approval-Equal-Better-Bush-Clinton.aspx
Who cares what Republicans think? Most of you didn't vote for Obama anyway.
91% of Democrats are perfectly happy with Obama, and 59% of the
independents. These are the people that voted for Obama, and these
are the people that think he is doing what he got elected to do.

What exactly does that say? Does it say that people vote for personalities? Does it say that alot of people that usually would vote right voted for him because he's black? Does it say that the american people were sick of the neo cons?
It means alot of things, none of which have anything to do with the populace being more liberal than it was a year ago.
It means people finally wised up and got fed up with you conservatives
running the country into the ground and decided they wanted someone
with a brain and someone competent as president. Not someone they
"could have a beer with".
It seems a little over the top when the shoe is on the other foot, eh?
Grow a set and get ready because its coming...this is just the beginning
Yeah, keep up you snide, partisan BS, it just alienates more and more
people and will assure Obama serves a full 8 years. Why would anyone
ever want to vote for the hysterical lunatics on your side.

Self-deprecating humor is a little different than calling someone a nappy headed ho... don't you think? And for the record, I think the Imus firing was bogus too. But you can be a smug prick if you want...I don't really give a ****.
It's still insulting someone when you get down to where the rubber meets the road. So you either believe in that sort of thing, disagree with it, or worse pick and decided to be offended to suit your own needs.

If Imus had referred to himself as a "nappy headed ho" then this would
be equivalent to what Obama said about the Special Olympics.
Obama was attempting to make fun of himself for not being a very good
bowler. Imus was likening a group of clean cut successful women to sleazy
street hookers for God knows what reason.

Sure why not invite the entire Special Olympics Republican congress over to the House for some fun!!:approve:

Its funny how Republicans did not say a peep, when Bush turned failing to find WMD into skit/parody at a Press Club Banquet a few years back. Bush did the parody while over 3,000 troop had already died in Iraq!! To add insult to injury....Bush lied about WMD in Iraq to justify sending our military into Iraq in the first place. How tastless and callous was that!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKX6luiMINQ&NR=1
Before coming President, while Gov. of Texas, Bush actually mimicked and teased an a Prisoner he was about to put to Death b/c she was pleading for her life! How callous and insensitive was that! :wiggle:
Seems like Bush was always at his best when it came to humor......only when death and destruction was involved.
So much for "Compassionate Conservatism"!!!....RIGHT!
