View Full Version : kiper: cutler overhyper "makes me ill"

Cutler's complaining came about because the Denver Broncos tried to trade Cutler in a three-team deal that would have brought over Matt Cassel from New England. But when the trade fell through, Cutler started to complain.

Kiper says Cassel would have been an "upgrade" over Cutler and that Cutler is, to put it mildly, overrated.

"[Cutler] throws one pass, he's a Hall of Famer," Kiper says. "I've seen the media put him in the Hall of Fame. I had to run to the bathroom quick. It was making me ill. I've been hearing this overhype.

"This guy was overhyped at the combine, he was overhyped at Senior Bowl week, he's been overhyped before he was drafted. The media, they love Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler can do no wrong. I've been saying he's overrated since day one. Everyone's been pounding their chests saying, 'Oh, I love Jay Cutler, I'm a genius.' They have egg on their face now."

Kiper points out that Cutler has yet to lead the Broncos to a winning record or a playoff appearance. Also, Kiper says, "[Cutler] makes throws that leave you scratching your head, which I said on draft day when he was picked. Yeah, he's got a strong arm, but my daughter knew he had a strong arm. She could've written that report."

Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay tell Ryen Russillo all about players with buzz and those without it. Plus, the Scouts Inc. crew has a couple of mid-round steals for you to consider.

Kiper compares Cutler to Jeff George. "Jeff George had a great arm, and Jeff George had a lot of great games in this league, and people were putting Jeff George in the HOF early in his career," Kiper says. "So I'm just telling you, this is ridiculous."

Also, Cutler once said he had a better arm than John Elway. Not surprisingly, Kiper isn't a big fan of that comment, either. "So what? Who cares? Why would you make a comparison to John Elway? That could be taken like you're in a position to critique the quarterback that is a legend."

Kiper has been the one with egg on his face up until 2 weeks ago. He's a jagoff.

Oh, hey retard, it's hard to have a winning record or get to the playoffs when your team is in the bottom 3 in every notable defensive stat.
If/when Cutler gets a ring, I just want kiper to admit he was wrong.

I like how everyone with a gripe against Cutler likes to twist the Elway thing into something it's not. As soon as you see that, you know their opinion and journalism integrity is biased since they can't even relate a simplie situation accurately.

Somebody look up Elway's first 3 years.

They talk about how John had to carry the team...

we will never see another like John ... But Jay shows he has all those god given gifts ... And sometimes there is flashes of things that remind me of young John...

And much like you can't teach speed , Jay has tons of unteachables , the frame , arm , way he can move . I just hope he is here so i get to see it cause you only get one of those type guys once every 20 years or so...

Elway was 27-13 in his first three years.
Cutler, 17-20

I'm still a fan of Jay's but none of these off-season antics are serving him well.

It's ironic, but when all is said and done, the comment that's likely going to stick to Cutler is the one Jake made, about him being the second coming of Jeff George. Great talent, poor maturity and decision-making. Jay can avoid that fate if he grows up, quick. Otherwise, his nemesis Jake Plummer just defined Cutler's career for him.

No, I'm not saying to take his word. But his characterization is going to have the most resonance -- it's going to be the hardest to shake in the media.

I agree.

And good guy Plummer is rooting against the Broncos every chance he gets in hopes of making his prophecy come true.

Elway was 27-13 in his first three years.
Cutler, 17-20

The Broncos in

1983 were 21/28 in defense
1984 were 25/28 in defense
1985 were 13/28 in defense

The Broncos in

2006 were 14/32 in defense
2007 were 19/32 in defense
2008 were 29/32 in defense

I initially looked these up hoping the Broncos had a stronger defense at the beggining of Elway's career, but that is apparently not true. However during the so called break out 3rd season Elway had a middle of he road Defense, where Cutler had a terrible Defense. Not sure how that factors in, bottom line is they both had some bad D's to work with and John got the wins. So go figure.

These are the rankings from NFL.com by the way, and I'm sure I could have messed it up in one way or the other.

This whole thing with the trade just freaking made Kiper's year. His ass was eating crow by the bucketfull when Jay was putting up numbers and going to the pro-bowl. Cutler isn't overrated (execpt by the HOF chanting crowd). He's good and getting better. Damn sight better than Young and Leinart. Too bad he had to go and act out like a spoiled bitch to get Mel all riled up.

That's interesting. In Elway's second year, with a defense that was only ever-so-slightly worse than the one Jay had this past season, he managed to get the team to 12-2.

You need a lot more data to understand how bad the defences were. NFL's ranking is a fairly poor measure...too many factors are ignored or explained.

In light of recent news and it being Tuesday, and being out of work I'm going to go get hammered. However I will try and look at the stats in more detail in the coming days.

in 1983 we gave up 20.4 pts/gm--9th in the NFL
in 1984 we gave up 15.1 pts/gm--2ND in the NFL
in 1985 we gave up 20.6 pts/gm---13th in the league

in 2006 we gave up 19.1pts/gm--8th in the NFL--VEEEERRRY misleading--2nd half of the season it was around 25-26 I believe
in 2007 we gave up 25.6 pts/gm--28th in the NFL
in 2008 we gave up 28 pts/gm--30th in the NFL

There you have it folks..get the PPG around 20 and we will be in the playoffs...........

not quite:

We gave up 15.1 pts/gm good for 2nd in the NFL--Jay had HALF as good of a scoring defense as John did in 1984

Kiper thought that Andre Ware was going to be a stud in the NFL. So maybe, just maybe, he could be wrong about Cutler. Oh, and also, when Merril Hodge disagreed with him about USC WR Mike Williams being the best player in his draft class Kiper said "I'll see you at his Hall of Fame induction." Good one.

hell Cutler can be league MVP this year, get Denver to the super bowl and win while throwing for 400 yards 4-TD's and 0-INT's in a super bowl MVP winning event and follow that up with a career complete with a few more super bowl wins and MVP awards, crush every QB record in NFL history, get into the HOF as a first ballot inductee, and Kiper will still say Cutler was overrated.

It's funny going over to the planet and this is what is most exiting for you folks. Of course, if it's all you got, it's all you've got. Good to see all those additions Pioli has made thus far. I'll give you all of my Casino cash if Cassell has either more wins or better stats than Cutler at the end of the year. Of course, this assumes he stays on the Broncos. And BTW, I'm certain nearly all of the Broncos fans would rather have Cutler and if not for his crying, I think KC fans would too.
