Simms signs with Broncos

By Jim Wyatt • THE TENNESSEAN • March 4, 2009

Free agent quarterback Chris Simms, who spent last season with the Titans, has signed a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos, according to sources familiar with the situation.

He should definitely be an "open book" kind of guy for McDaniels to teach. I thought he was very much a "Cassel" type of talent (before all the stupid franchise tag and bidding war).

Smart kid, teachable, just never had "it" up to this point.

Schefter:

Broncos continue signing spree with Simms, Arrington (http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/03/04/broncos-continue-signing-spree-with-simms-arrington/)

Posted: Denver started the week with a quarterback controversy and is ending it with a new quarterback. Free-agent quarterback Chris Simms has reached agreement with the Broncos on a two-year contract. He will be insurance for starting quarterback Jay Cutler, whose name emerged last week in trade talks.

Simms hasn’t signed yet but soon will and he will have gone from Tampa to Tennessee to Denver.

Finally, Denver signed free agent running back J.J. Arrington to a four-year contract. The deal was signed last week, the league rejected the contract’s language, but it was redone Wednesday. Arrington is a Bronco.

McDaniel's and company continue to do an excellent job in free agency. Chris Simms isn't going to throw darts vertically, down the field, or will teams back from 21 down, but he's smart, coachable, and a great game manager for this offense.

More important is that he can help potty train Jay. Simms went through hell in Tampa with Gruden and seen a star fall in Tenn. He's also got his father's experience to back up his own travels in the NFL.

Hopefully he can be the big brother that Jay needs. Not just an X & O dicussion, but a NFL life tutor for Jay.

Great pick-up.

I can't remember the last time this board was happy about our back-up QB. Shanahan routinely poo-poo'd the spot, and we got very lucky to avoid injury.
(Ask New England.)

It's nice to have a guy who could come in and not only win a game or two, but who's shown flashes of upside to the extent that all hope wouldn't be lost as far as long-term success.

Excellent move, and again... this follows the pattern of what McD's been doing.

All of these are added bonuses as well. Imagine growing up learning about N.Y. media circus from Phil Simms. He was in a pressure cooker QB controversy at Texas and was both immensely popular and unpopular, depending on the week. Oh and he recovered from suffering a ruptured spleen in a game.

If anyone can teach Jay to suck it up, and learn a little bit of media savvy it's this guy.

You know what, I'm probably in the minority here but I always thought that Simms had what it took to be a starter in this league and have always been a little suprised that he hasn't grabbed a spot; particularly on teams were the QB is questionable, e.g. Minni, Det, Kansas (until now) etc.

I really like this signing.

I like Simms a lot which is why I said he would be a great signing. For a young quarterback, he handled Gruden's complex offense pretty well. It's just unfortunate that he had that crazy spleen injury that sidlinded him for pretty much two seasons so he kind of fell out favor in Tampa. The guy is a pretty smart player.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cutler struggles, he'll get in McDaniel's doghouse real quick and Simms will be given a shot. That's what I don't want to see.

I doubt this will happen. The only way Simms plays is if Cutler gets hurt. Also, why do you think Simms will pick up McD's offense quicker than Cutler? Is Simms smarter or something?

Didn't think so.

All I can think about when I see Simms is how Colorado just destroyed his ass in the conference championship game in '01/'02, and all the turnovers he had. Buffs would have won that game by 40 if Brown hadn't finally brought Applewhite into the game.

You cant do that anymore in NFL contracts unless there's a big roster bonus in Year 2. The base salaries can only increase by a certain percentage for the following year.

eg Simms cant get a $1m base in 09 and anything over $1.5m base in 2010.
