Free agent DL Vonnie Holliday is scheduled to visit the Broncos on Thursday and the Lions sometime early next week.

Denver is ready to challenge for the league's oldest defense. Holliday, 33, would at least be an immediate starter there, likely at defensive end opposite Darrell Reid. Holliday would play tackle for Jim Schwartz in Detroit

Old school, but has been productive recently. Can't hurt to look.

Nolan needs to find some kind of stability with the defense and bringing in value experienced leaders is the way forward until some of our younger players learn the system and we blend in some rooks.

I can see the draft now.

With the #12 pick the Denver Broncos select.....Rod Woodson, CB, NFL Network.

who cares if they are old, we need a defense NOW, and will start filling in/replacing players on D in the draft.

He'd be a good fit on the DL in a 3-4. Plus, any young DL they end up drafting don't have to start right away and can play in a rotation to give older guys like Holliday rest.

Interesting article:

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2009/03/holliday-free-agent-tour-starts-thursday.html

It should not surprise that McDaniels is interested in the former Miami players. All three -- Hill, Goodman and Holliday -- came to Miami because Nick Saban brought them. McDaniels's first job as a coach came at Michigan State in 1999 under, who else, Saban.

So something about the type of player Saban likes obviously rubbed off on McDaniels. It also doesn't hurt, I'm sure, that McDaniels saw Hill and Goodman and, yes, Holliday, twice every season when he was an assistant at New England.

Holliday led all Miami defensive linemen in tackles and sacks last season despite playing only 56 percent of the downs.

Know any verbs?

Holiday played for the Chiefs for a few years and was horrendous. I think i'd rather spend my money else-where. How about Bertrand Berry, he has been more productive then Holiday. Shaun Cody is antoher big bodied D-linemen, and I know some might not like this guy due to his character issues, but Tank Johnson can play.

Worth a look then.

He only had 3.5 sacks last year..it wasn't like he was dominate.

Would be a solid pickup. He's a little long in the tooth, but still productive, plus if you draft a couple of kids they likely won't be ready to start right off the bat.

It almost feels like a repeat of the Browncos episode, with all the raids on one team ... difference being that Miami actually had a good defense.

Yes, and tell me please: How many sacks did the Broncos ' DTs/DEs have last year? Hmmmmm?

Not my fav, but he may be serviceable for half the D plays in a rotational scheme. Not much would be new to him......

Darrell Green visiting tomorrow, but on a serious note I would love Vonnie on the roster.

I love the veteran movement going on on D. My guess is that they will draft very D heavy and let them develop under these guys. And these are not veteran scrubs we are signing. These guys are battle tested and talented. You know, they probably don't screw up many assignments, etc and will probably pick up a new scheme better than a bunch of kids. Really like it.

Now bring in Ray Lewis!

Not necessarily. Here's Holliday's career stats from nfl.com. It indicates he's a sort of an inconsistent player.

BTW, here's Ekuban's stats for comparison. While he's sort of in the same league as Holliday, he's one of the few people last year who knew how to get to the quarterback...

Holliday plays a DE in the 3-4. Ekuban in the 4-3. Different production from both.

What scheme of D though? It's like comparing him in KFC vs Mia. A 3-4 doesn't need to get sack total in double digits to be effective.

after this the only guy i want broncos to sign is ray lewis and we shall go over to the draft.

Draft all defense and one wide receiver. that is insurance if bmarsh gets into further trouble.

I talked to a friend of mine who's a Dolphins fan and he said Holliday was pretty effective when he rotated in and out with other linemen, FWIW.

I'm torn...he could be a great player for us or someone who mentors the younger guys. Either way, I think he can add value, as long as he doesn't get signed to a huge deal.
