Can you believe it? How long did they let Osborne hang around before he won a NC? 20 years? This guy was running a 'clean' program (for a change) and he gets the boot.....even without a losing record in his 6 seasons. There is no place like nebraska.:pity:

Whatever...... you've shown your bias towards Nebraska. It's obvious that the program has been in decline. I'm sick of listening to accusations that Osborne was running a dirty program. This is the by a fan of the team that allowed a gang rape to occur by football recruits and no matter how bad you slam some players like Lawrence Phillips, Rae Carruth pretty much takes the cake.
**** You.
Nebraska has its share of problems, but just because you were brain washed at an early age to hate us does not justify the bile you spill towards us today.
Enjoy your bowl season.

My bad.... I posted last night after coming home from the bar, and was pretty pissed about the Solich firing. My appologize on the two above posts for getting pissy about it.

Wow, I am stunned by that move by Nebraska. Hey Evenrude, do you think that was a bad move?
As a Cornhusker hater I never want to see them beat CU but even then, I'd rather hate a 10-2 Nebraska team more than a 6-6 team. Its hard to believe that those frauds in K-state might be better than Neb now...
I'm being sincere when I say I really am disappointed that they did that. Solich was treated rather harshly and I still don't think it was the right move. However, if they get Joe Glenn from Wyo, then I'm gonna be sick. He is one of the best coaches out there and if he lands at Neb, watch out Big 12.

The few Cornhusker fans I know up here were actually hoping for him to get fired. All I have to say is they better hire a damn good coach because there is a lot worse than Solich.

I have mixed feelings..... I wanted to see him them to give him one more year. I hate the way it was handled. I think Bo Polini will be the next head coach and be a very good one. Solich has been very loyal to the team for decades and a first year AD fires him. I think at the very least he could have been offered a job in the athletic office.

I agree completely Evenrude. I wonder if there was more to it than just this. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds on the next few recruiting classes.
I still think it was a mistake by an overzealous AD.

Yikes!:o
Like I stated before, Osborne pretty much cleaned up his program the last 8-10 years he was there......but it was business as usual for a long time. Solich was running a clean program from the start, and seemed to me to really have the players best interests at heart. Too bad he had to go. Maybe the Buffs can use him somehow? That is if he does not get another HC job........
And as far as your accusation that a gang rape was "allowed" to occur at CU.......what evidence do you have to back that up? I remember the charge, but do not know what ever became of it. Either way, at least the law enforcement in CO doesn't just look the other way when it comes to players on one of it's college football teams (or the team itself) involved in questionable goings on.....

Solich being canned had been in the works for a couple of weeks.
Originally, Nebraska officials were said to be offering Solich some type of administrative position in lieu of his coaching duties.

And at the University of Colorado, women have told the police twice in the past five years that they were raped during off-campus recruiting parties. Both times, the authorities in Boulder said they could not press rape charges, because everyone involved, including the women who said they had been raped, were so intoxicated that their assertions could not be corroborated. Evenrude: Any word on possible canidates yet? Not sure his name but the guy who coaches Cal is a pretty popular offensive guy. Wonder if Nebraska will go for something completley new like that.

Nebraska is finished.
Now that they have to play more teams in the conference that are traditional powers, and with teams like Missouri, K-State, and Colorado building up their programs, I knew they would not be able to win the conference as often as they used to be able to when it was between them and either Oklahoma or Colorado.
I believe that is why Osborne got out when he did. He got his after 20 years, and got out when the going got tough (joining the Big XII). He knew that having a couple of more tough games on the schedule would doom the dominance of the program. Especially with the Big XII Championship game added.....He was adamantly against the championship game.
It was getting tough enough to win the North with Colorado and K-State coming on let alone having to play Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M in alternating seasons or facing them as the South Champion every year.
If they think they can go back to winning the conference every year or every other year like they did in the Big 8, they are sadly mistaken. No coach is going to be able to get nebraska to that level again. There is too much competition now.
I'm going to enjoy their futile search for the perfect coach to "bring them back".......even the "almighty" Tom Osborne wouldn't be able to do it....it's going to be funny watching the program slide for the next few years.

I'd say right now that the leading canidate is first year defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. The other current coach that will be considered is Turner Gill. Other college coaches I've heard mentioned are Meyers from Utah and Glenn from Wyoming (he was head coach at Doane college in Crete Nebraska at one time)
They are being very tightlipped about it right now, but I'm hoping they make a choice quickly or it's going to kill this recruiting class.

Wow I figured Nebraska would go get them a big name coach. Why would you fire Solich (not the worst coach) for someone unproven?
Evenrude
12-01-2003, 04:42 PM
Pelini is drawing some favorable comparision to Bob Stoops. I believe they were childhood friends. He was one of the names being considered for the Arizona job. Monte Kiffen (DC for the Bucs) called him "one of the best young defensive minds in football" (I'm paraphrasing that)
I made the comment earlier in the season that the only way Bo Pelini stays at Nebraska is if they make him head coach, otherwise he leaves for greener pastures. I don't know, I may be way off base, but if I had to bet on it it would be Pelini.

Yes and No.
It's true that the Big 12 is much more difficult than the old Big 8 and the championship game does end up costing league members possible national titles. The problem with Solich's teams wasn't just how often they were losing but how they were losing. Osborne and Devany teams were not blown out like NU versus Texas, K-State or Colorado two years ago. I think what the AD said is Nebraska needs to get back to the position of challenging for league and national titles which it has not been able to do lately.
As far as the change being a good one or not, that remains to be seen. A new coach and new facilities (in progress right now) should be a step in the right direction.

What I can't believe is how they did one of their own! I mean Solich devoted most of his life to the program and they just booted him to the curb like yesterday's garbage.....BRUTAL!
I don't know about you, but to me, if that's how they treat one of their own, that's not a job I want to interview for.

Finally something we agree on! ;D
Yeah it wasn't right the way this whole thing went down. Solich and Peterson (the AD) go way back 30 some years when they both started at Nebraska. I wonder if there isn't some personal issues involved.

I'd love for KC to lose a good OC and Nebraska to get an crappy HC in one swoop!

I heard Al Saunders name today also... Monte Kiffin would be nice, but he's about 97 years old. Bill Snyder has also been mentioned (that would royally suck, I hate that SOB).
I still think it's about a 50% chance Bo Pelini will be the next coach....50% somebody else.
Tom Rathman as an offensive coordinator could be great. He's been RBs coach with the niners and offensive coordinator under Mouch at Detroit. He could run a hybrid Husker I-formation/West Coast offense....???

From what I am hearing most coaches around the nation are laughing at Nebraska. Saying how the job is suicide because the expectations are near impossible.
Looks like this is going to be interesting... My guess is they give Polini the job and after two years (possibly one!) they find a big name when the dust settles.

Challenges are one thing, but what nebraska wants is ridiculous. I don't know any outsider who would want the job, unless he is desperate for work.
Like I said before, even their "god" Tom Osborne couldn't bring them to their previous level of dominance.....they are going to have to accept that there is just too much competiton now. They are not going to win the conference every year, or every other year like they used to.
And now they have screwed themselves IMO for the next year or two at least......life is good!;D

Less than a week after Nebraska fired coach Frank Solich, signs are pointing to interim coach Bo Pelini having the inside track at getting the job. Soon.
Boosters with connections inside the Nebraska athletic department say there is a "75 percent chance" Pelini will be hired, most likely by early next week. The plan, according to the boosters, has Pelini hiring former Nebraska fullback Tom Rathman, now the Detroit Lions' running backs coach, as offensive coordinator. Barney Cotton would be demoted from offensive coordinator to offensive line coach, or possibly would stay as a co-coordinator.
Marvin Sanders, whose secondary led the nation in interceptions this season, would become defensive coordinator. Gone would be popular running backs coach Turner Gill, who, along with Pelini, applied for the head position.
Various Nebraska boosters contacted say they have all heard the same plan. So have Nebraska recruits. Joe Manning, a cornerback at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Fla., told the Lincoln Journal Star on Wednesday that Nebraska graduate assistant Carl Pelini, Bo's brother, told him there "was a chance" Bo Pelini would be named head coach.
"He said they should know by next Tuesday before my visit," Manning told the Journal Star.
Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson has kept tight-lipped since firing Solich on Saturday, but Pederson would have good reason if he's in a hurry to find a replacement. Manning, along with teammate Calvin Darity, a top-ranked offensive guard, visit Nebraska from Dec. 12-14 on one of the biggest weekends in the recruiting season.

Just as long as its not the Pitt coach or Glenn...
Although, Pelini would make a good choice, I wonder how long before the pressure gets to him. You have to know that this team will be mediocre for a least a couple of years. It will be interesting

Sounds like Solich is going to coach at Army.
Nebraska has alot of good young talented guys.... especially on defense (Fabian Washington and the Bullock brothers to name a few). They should be pretty good next year. Heck, Lord leaving is kind of like bringing in some good guys.

I'm not sure what Steve Pederson (AD) is doing.... the longer this drags on the more I think it may be an NFL coach they are going after. Losing Polini to Oklahoma would definately suck. I'm not sure anybody knows what Pederson is doing right now himself included....

Mixed reaction..... alot of people still figure it's Pelini job. Spurrier was pretty much hated around here when he was at Florida. I'd be pretty excited about it. He'd be a heck of a recruiter, and could probably get Pelini to stick around as a DC. Not sure if the weather is condusive to a fun and gun offense here though....???
