Sirius NFL Radio reports from the combine that the Lions are leaning away from taking a QB with the #1 pick and towards either Alabama OT Andre Smith or Boston College DT B.J. Raji. Apparently the Lions aren't sold on any of the QB's as 1st rounders and have so many needs, they may be content going with Daunte Culpepper at QB this season.

The report made it sound like they were leaning the way of Smith, but an outstanding combine from Raji could vault him to the top spot. Regardless, it looks as though Raji is a likely top 5 pick as Seattle has apparently taken more to Raji than Michael Crabtree, and a certain top 10 pick who with a strong combine could vault to the top position in the draft.

I can tell you that the Lions will NOT be taking a QB with their first pick in the 2009 Orangemane Mock Draft.

If Smith falls to 12 do we take him?

If Smith falls to 12 do we take him?

We could use him as leverage to trade down, but I wouldn't be happy if we took him.

How happy would you be if we drafted Percy Harvin at 12?

i hope they do and then I hope teams draft 2 QB's before the #12 pick so some D talent falls to us.

The bit about Culpepper could be a smoke screen -- a la Shanahan in 2006 before he moved up to nab Cutler.

If we are lucky -- one of the top QBs (and one of the OTs) will still be there at pick #12.

Then we might see some wheelin' n dealin'...

if you have the #1 pick overall, you dont need to smoke screen anyone. you take whoever you want.

Percy Harvin is one of my 3 favorite players in this draft. I'd love to have him in the Orange n Blue.

I would hate getting Percy Harvin, he gets injured from eating oatmeal and has no idea how to run regular routes. He is going to be a slot reciever who will fall apart when he has to run into the tight areas and battle for the ball.

There is a HUGE difference between being a playmaker in college and in the pros, look at Reggie Bush. If we didn't have a ton of needs I would love to get him as a return guy, but we just can't throw a 1st round pick away on a return specialist.

The Lions have said that they will have their draft pick signed before the draft, so we will know who it is before hand. My money is on a LT since they are talking about moving Backus to OG, that would leave the LT spot conveniently empty.

Andre Smith isn't that good from what I've heard. A lot of people view him as a OG and not a LT in the NFL. You don't take that with the #1 overall pick.

From the sounds of it, Andre Smith has been shooting himself in the foot on full auto today. #1 overall - not so much...

Ya, I doubt Smith goes #1 now. Man Raji has been shooting up the charts. I'd like us to take Rey M. at 12 and look at Ron Brace, Safety or Corner in the 2nd round.

Don't they have 2 #1s?

I think this is just a negotiation tactic to curb the price for Stafford.

They are in the good situation to help a #1 QB "come along." They already have Culpepper, which should do good enough to start the season, but bad enough to bench as a new QB gets the hang of things (game 10?).

They need a great QB, so they should either trade for one, or pick up Stafford. Unless, they like another QB better - someone like Bomar with the later pick in the first round. I know it sounds funny, but I think Bomar could end up a little like Flacco last year. From all reports he looked really solid at the Senior Bowl, and might sneak his way up into the first round.

Not a smokescreen for other teams....but more of a smokescreen for the agents of the top draft picks. Any chance you have at gaining leverage over those top guys in order to get them to sign for a little less in advance of the draft, you have to take it.

:spit: Yeah because the Lions are real worried someone is going to jump in front of them and steal their pick.

The Lions want to sign their pick before the draft, so a smokescreen isn't much of a strategy, the player and agent will know well ahead.

The last time a team really tried that strategy the Raiders was unable to get Russell signed before the season and he sat out all year, even the Lions have to realize that that is not a good idea.

I'd imagine the "leak" is to help keep some leverage in trade talks for Matt Cassel. They obviously would prefer to give up the first pick in the 2nd round as opposed to the 20th overall pick in the draft.
