HOF. And something I did not know. He spent his time with the Bills as a 3-4 DE. That is just amazing. Career Sack Leader despite being head up on a Tackle. Absolutely amazing

Damn we had a great defense that yr. That was the one Elway yr that the offense really let the defense down. That play lost the game for us. What a crappy play by Elway on that play. Great play by Bruce but cmon that was a crappy offense that yr.

What yr was that?

didn't we lose that game 10-7? Defense gave up 3 points to the Bills high powered offense.

yea....that was the game....I think it happened in the 3rd quarter or something....I have to look it up..

it was one of the worst plays Elway ever made, in my opinion...bruce had him at about the 10 or so and instead of jsut throwing it away he waited to long, it was tipped upand Bruce just waltzed into the endzone

that game literally made me cry

Referee: Dale Hamer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Hamer)
Game attendance: 80,272Buffalo relied on missed field goals by Denver and some key plays from their defense to narrowly defeat the Broncos in a tough defensive struggle. Although the first half was scoreless, the Broncos advanced into Buffalo territory on all five of their possessions in the first half. However, Denver kicker David Treadwell missed 3 field goals, hitting the goal posts twice and driving the other attempt wide right.
Late in the third quarter, the Broncos faced second down and 10 at their own 19-yard line. Quarterback John Elway threw a shovel pass intended for running back Steve Sewell, but it was tipped by Bills defensive lineman Jeff Wright into the arms of linebacker Carlton Bailey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlton_Bailey), who returned the ball 11 yards for Buffalo's only touchdown of the game. Elway was then knocked out of the game after suffering a deep thigh bruise, and was replaced by backup Gary Kubiak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kubiak). With 4:18 left in the game, Buffalo kicker Scott Norwood made a 44-yard field goal to increase the lead, 10-0. Kubiak, who was playing in his last NFL game before retiring, led the Broncos 85 yards in eight plays and scored a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left. Denver then recovered the ensuing onside kick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onside_kick), but the Bills clinched the victory after defensive back Kirby Jackson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_Jackson) forced and recovered a fumble from running back Steve Sewell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Sewell).
Broncos receiver Vance Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Johnson) finished the game with 8 receptions for 104 yards. Kubiak completed 11 of 12 passes for 136 yards and rushed for 22.

Scoring
BUF - Bailey 11 interception return (Norwood kick) BUF 7-0
BUF - field goal Norwood 44 BUF 10-0
DEN - Kubiak 3 run (Treadwell kick) BUF 10-7

What yr was that?

1991 season playoffs

the game before that afc title game was that "Drive II" thriller against Houston. John made that crazy throw to Vance Johnson on 4th down. converted two 4th downs on that game winning drive and Kubiak made that clutch hold on the botched snap on the game winning kick.

the 44 yard pass to VANCE on 4th down in the HOUSTON GAME!!!

THAT WAS AWESOME>>>>>

Treadwell obviously screwed us that year

I remember a lot of people in Denver expressing relief that the Broncos did not win that game.

They felt the Broncos were going to lose the Super Bowl to the Skins again and would prefer they didn't even make it. Pretty sure those same people didn't want them to go to SB32 either.

Just don't understand some fans mentality.

damn taht was a good game....

if I remember correctly (and looking back I do) Gary Kubiak came in and brought Denver back

they even recovered an onside kick at the end of the game to give us one last shot....

Oh not that i'd ever want them to lose any game...(who the hell wanted them to lose the AFC championship game???) but we woulda gotten SMOKED by washington. They were a machine that season.

Funny now that I think about when Broncos lose we always lose the same way. it continues today!!!! Turnovers, missed FG, fumbles, interceptions, weird plays that go the other way for tds etc etc etc.

Some things never change. Maybe this means since we have blown it a few times again we are about ready to have our 3-4 yrs of good luck.

If I remember the right yr? Man they just chucked the ball downfield that yr.

i remember that we had recovered the onside kick...probably about a minute left...i thought it was Kubiak that fumbled a snap but looking back at the boxscore it was Sewell

how did Elway sit with a thigh contusion??

It was sewell on a dump off that woulda been like a 6 yard gain or so if i recall?

Musta been one hell of a bruise! But Kubes did spark the O, so maybe thats why john didnt come back in.

interesting that we took out two of the best offenses in the league in those playoffs (Oilers and Bills) but nobody gave us a chance against Washington (had we made it)

also interesting that the Bills defense held us to zero points in 3 quarters and then got steamrolled by the Skins

this was probably one of the more gutwrenching losses i can remember from back then

I remember every Broncos game I watched it would go to the highlights and it would be another long bomb from skins. It was like every friggin week they were hitting them.

That was Norv Turners offense right?

I dont believe so. Turners offense was the 90's cowboy offense...i think it was just a gibbs offense.

No, 91 was Norvall's first year as Cowboys OC.

Remember this game very well. Treadwell, ugh....*convulsions* But if Sewell doesn't fumble, I swear we win. Kubes was geeked up, gaining more confidence with each snap...he knew it was his shot. Oh well. No one ever really explained Elway sitting with a thigh bruise. Personally, I think he may have just not felt good from the start.

On the surface the idea that Bruce Smith holds the record "lining up directly over a Tackle" sounds good, but it is very flawed.

Probably 75% of Bruce Smith's sacks came on 3rd down, clear passing situations. And Bruce Smith used to line wider than most Rush Ends on 3rd down.

Doesn't take away from his greatness as he is a 1st ballot no brainer, but he didn't line up directly over OT's for those sacks.

Really it was that yr I remember being the one that made everyone know who Turner was. His offense kicked ass that yr.
