ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos on Monday hired Roman Phifer as assistant coach - linebackers.

Phifer, a 15-year NFL veteran and three-time Super Bowl champion, is starting his first coaching assignment after retiring from the NFL in 2005. He will assist Don Martindale in coaching the linebackers.

Phifer, 40, was a second-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1991 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons for the Rams, leading the team in tackles during the 1993, 1995 and 1996 campaigns, and was named a Pro Bowl alternate in 1995. He played for the New York Jets from 1999-2000 and totaled 95 tackles, 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles during that span.

He is best known for his contributions as a linebacker on three Super Bowl-winning teams with the New England Patriots where he played from 2001-04. In his four seasons with the Patriots he recorded 384 tackles -- second only to LB Ted Bruschi during that span -- and helped New England win Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX. Phifer retired from football after an injury-shortened stint with the New York Giants in 2005.

In his career he played in 212 games and recorded 1,296 tackles (923 solo), 29 sacks and 11 interceptions.

Roman Phifer was born March 5, 1968, in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He attended South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C., where he lettered three years in football and basketball, earning all-county and Charlotte Post Athlete of the Year honors as a senior. Phifer and his wife, Linda, have two sons, Angelo and Jordan, and a daughter, Milan.

In addition to Phifer’s hiring, the team has retained Keith Burns as coaching assistant-special teams, completing Head Coach Josh McDaniels’ staff for the 2009 season. Burns, a 13-year NFL veteran who spent 11 seasons of his career with Denver, worked with the Broncos’ special teams the past two seasons.

The Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl since Phifer left the team. He is the missing piece! ;)

The hiring of Roman Phifer makes me wonder if McDaniels will bring with him the New England philosophy/ability to plug in veteran defensive players, that most others feel are past their prime, into their lineup, with success.

Bill Belichick has always been able to take veteran players and put them in situations to take advantage of their savvy and instincts, while covering up their some of the declining physical limitations.

You mix in some athletic and skilled young players and you can get away with it, while being able to put a lot of leadership and experience on the field and in the locker room.

IMO, she's a great addition to the ball club. I'm sure the LB's are REALLY stoked to see her. I'm sure Don Martindale is also excited to work with her as well.

That's NOT what she said.

On the Phifer hire, I love it! Smart and savvy player... if they can inject a portion of the football smarts and situational awareness into our LBs, we might have a decent LB unit for the first time since Al's departure.

Another thing I like, so far no pussies on the defensive coaching staff. We are at least bringing in coaches with the right attitude.

Time will tell if our guys respond.

Yeah we've needed some guys with attitude for some time.

have 2 LB coaches may imply going to a 3-4 defense sooner rather than later

what are the chances pfifer gives a big **#$ you to Nate Webster? I'm counting down the days. Also, who would win in a fight, WW or The Pfife?

Trick question, neither, there'd be a Wild card pulled when Ditka would come in and give a instructional lecture on how to fight to both of them! Commentated by John Madden of course.

They have certainly had enough time to assemble a good staff and put together a plan. By the end of the month, we'll finally get to see how McD's mind works.

Are we a "star FA" team?
Do we go for older, experienced vets?
Do we hire players for 4-3, 3-4, or guys that can do both?

And, on offense. Do he go after another experienced RB to fit his system? Does he look for a quality #2 WR? Who will be the backup QB next year?

Who gets released outright from the Broncos, who gets traded?

It will be interesting to watch.

I hope to God we get a report about WW putting on 15 lbs this offseason so he sticks with the team. I love the way that kid plays, absolutely love it...

You don't consider Royal a "quality #2 WR"? Or are you considering him the slot guy of the future when Stokely retires?

I used the search function and found nothing, but Sonoflelolang didn't spell his name right (seriously, Pfiefer?) and so nothing came up. :(

Ugh, shame on me, since I get on everyone's case about spelling. I have a friend who spells his last name like that.

Apologies, apologies

Yes, sorry about that.

I imagine McD using Royal in the slot like he used Welker, that's probably making an assumption on my part. I almost considered Royal a 1b wherever he was lined up, and considered D-Jax and the scrub crew as our #2.

Good point.

On a championship team, I would see Marshall and some other tall guy on the outside, with Royal working the slot. Once again, i'm not the coach.

I'm hoping Webster is gone. He just flat out sucks.

Royal should be the #2 option. Just because he is short doesn't mean you throw him in the slot. I don't even have to give any names but there are and have been a ton of great shorter WR's in this league that didn't play slot.

I dont think anyone here is suggesting he cant. I assume they are looking at Welker and figuring that is the best spot for Eddie to excel in the new O

Everyone will play in the slot some. It's not like Royal will be a slot-only guy. They're going to move guys around a lot.

I wish Royal would get mad about being short and take it out on other teams like Steve Smith.
