USA vs Japan in competitive eating.

Recently, this contest has been dominated by IFOCE eater Takeru Kobayashi, who won it consistently from 2001 through 2006; he was dethroned in 2007 by Joey Chestnut. In 2008, Chestnut and Kobayashi tied at 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes (the time span had previously been 12 minutes), and Chestnut won in an eatoff in which he was the first of the two competitors to finish eating 5 hot dogs in overtime, earning Chestnut his second consecutive title.

USA vs Mexico in soccer is definitely the best rivalry if you actually go to those games in person and enjoy soccer.

But each sport definitely has its own obvious standouts.

NBA: Celtics-Lakers
MLB: Yanks-Sox
NFL: Broncos-Raiders-Chiefs, Bears-Packers

Agree, although I think the Broncos/Raiders is better than the rest of the division.

For me, rivalries are best in college. Nothing beats a collegiate rivalry. Pro rivalries are mostly boring and dont matter, but college rivalries are ****ing awesome. There is a hatred amongst the two programs in the rivalry that is unfounded at the pro-level.

NCAA Hoops: Duke - UNC. Two schools on the same road separated by 7 miles is by far and away the best rivalry in college hoops. That being said, there are a few other's that are pretty damn good. KU and UT have a heated rivalry now and if you've watched the games the last five years against each other, you'd be hard pressed to find better basketball. USC - UCLA, UConn - Pittsburgh, Kentucky-Tennessee, lots of great rivalries in NCAA hoops.

NCAA Football: OU-UT. Red River Rivalry is as good as it gets. There are numerous great rivalries in NCAA Football, so this one is about as subjective as it gets, but for me the OU-UT game si the best rivalry. The OSU and Michigan used to be good, and is old as hell. KU-Mizzou usually sucks but gets marks for its longevity and being the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi. USC-UCLA, USC-Notre Dame, Florida-Tennessee, just a ton of great rivalries.

NFL: None. There are good rivalries but none of them to be considered worthy of mention when talking all sports. Dallas - Washington would probably be the closest. Maybe Bears - Packers.

MLB : Yankees - Red Sox. This one is obvious and is among the best rivalry in all of sports if you are from the east coast. Personally I could care less.

NBA: Lakers - Celtics. dating back to Wilt and Russell, through Magic and Bird and now Kobe and KJ. This rivalry depends on both teams being great and both having an all-star to center around though.

Soccer: Haha.

Hockey: Haha.

Boston Bruins vs Montreal Canadians.

Some of the stories and fights in that rivalry go back to 1924 are incredible.

During the 1952 playoff semi-finals, Maurice Richard was knocked out in the seventh game but returned to score the series-winning goal. One of the most famous NHL photos is the one of Richard and Bruins goaltender "Sugar" Jim Henry shaking hands after the conclusion of the series; Richard has a cut above his eyebrow while Henry has a black eye.

As big as college football or basketball is, i can't see it being bigger than international competition. Alot of people mention UNC vs Duke as the biggest, how can that be? Not everyone is a fan of Duke or UNC and not everyone is a fan of college basketball. Where as you don't have to be a fan of soccer to part of the USA vs Mexico. You are part of the USA and national pride automaticaly gets you to become a fan and rooting for the USA.

I just look at it this way. I can't relate to the Packers-Bears, UNC-Duke, Yankees-Sox, Boston-Lakers rivalries. Why? I am not a fan of any of those teams, so it doesn't matter who wins or loose as long as its a good game. Now I can relate to USA vs Mexico. Its about national pride and the hatred i have for anybody that challenges this country that i love! Especially a team as arrogant as the Mexican soccer team.

The biggest rivalry in sports i can think of:

Soccer

USA vs Mexico is becoming huge.
Argentina vs Brazil
England vs Germany
England vs Argentina
Italy vs France
Spain vs Portugal
Cameroon vs Nigeria

on the club level

AC Milan vs Inter Milan
Barcelona vs Real Madrid
Manchester United vs Chelsea

their are also big rivalries among individual sports

like McEnroe vs Lendal, Nadal vs Federer, Sampras vs Agassi, Serena vs Venus. Tiger vs the entire PGA.

You know if their political relationship is strained if that game is canceled.

I honestly think the Raiders-Broncos is the greatest nfl rivalry. Soo much hate on each side.

Sadly, the poll was for the biggest rivals in teh US of A

Where as you don't have to be a fan of soccer to part of the USA vs Mexico. You are part of the USA and national pride automaticaly gets you to become a fan and rooting for the USA.

Usually people mention rivalries by sport. Im a huge college basketball fan but hate everything in and about the ACC including Dick Vital. But the UNC-Duke rivalry is one of those special rivalries because of the location of the schools, teh history of their playing and the heatedness of the rivalry.

I feel ya, Im not a fan of any team you just mentioned. However, a rivalry goes beyond being a fan of the teams in question. A great rivalry goes beyond that anyway. It intrigues the country for whatever reason. NOT Everyone will care, but by and large, the great rivalries in sports re watched by many more fans of people that arent fans of those specific teams. As for USA vs México, lets be real here. Soccer isnt popular. It will never be popular. The rivalry is probably as good as it gets in soccer, but it doesnt touch the heart of sports fans in general. I like to watch USA in the world cup, but I dont give one **** about them until the World Cup comes around and most people dont even care about that. That cannot be considered a great rivalry because it doesnt capture the nation's attention. that doesnt mean it isnt a great rivalry, just that its not among the greatest in America.

The biggest rivalry in sports i can think of:

Soccer

USA vs Mexico is becoming huge.

McEnroe vs Connors would take higher standing that him vs Lendl. Lendl vs Becker however was an aweseom rivalry but nothing in Tennis will surpass Sampras vs Agassi. Nadal vs Federer is great but they are two Europeans and Americans just dont care. Tiger vs The World is awesome too. The futbol rivalries you mentioned...apply your logic above to that and that is where you find most Americans.

I think it's interesting how Broncos fans think the Broncos-Raiders rivalry is in the top rivalries in the NFL, and Chiefs fans think the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry is one of the best. I wonder how Raiders fans see the whole deal.

Yeah, I was going to say that in the past USA-USSR in anything that could possibly be made competitive (space race, any Olympic sport and the Olympic medal count, puppet state wars) is about as intense as it gets.

all US home games is dominated by Mexican fans, so its safe to say that this rivalry is definitely in the USA

i think more people will be rooting for either USA or Mexico than any UNC vs Duke game. that by itself make it bigger. it might not be the best or the most intense, but it is bigger

maybe its just me, but i loved watching Mcenroe vs Lendl. Classic backcourt vs serve and volley. it was great because Lendl was #1 at that time.

From the ESPN.com recap:

"On a wet and windy night at Crew Stadium -- under the threat of a tornado watch -- the Americans ran their record to 9-0-2 on U.S. soil against Mexico since 2000. Tickets had sold out in 90 minutes, with many of the 23,776 fans showing up hours before to stand in the rain while waving flags and wearing their national colors."

"Fans from 43 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and, of course, Mexico snapped up the tickets. Hours before the game, the fans were singing, chanting, drumming and blowing on horns while wearing 3-foot wide sombreros, national flags and Uncle Sam hats."

And what better setting for this war than a brutal storm?

"The weather was relatively calm once the game got under way. A steady rain pelted the stadium most of the afternoon. Then around 90 minutes before the start, a mammoth storm front rolled through, shaking the windows around the stadium, blowing away anything that wasn't tied down and reducing visibility to almost nothing.

Shortly after, crews came out twice to squeegee the field. Stadium officials warned the early-arriving spectators to seek shelter under the stands after a violent lightning strike not far away.

With temperatures throughout the day in the 60s, a cold front came through to create dangerous possibilities."
