I read this year the 8 original AFL franchises will wear throwback uniforms in 2 games. Has there been any word when the Broncos will wear theirs?

The schedule for next season isn't even out, bro. But that's pretty cool if it's true. Probably something to do with their 50th seasons.

I hate the bucking Bronco helmet with that faded orange jersey, pre-1965, but it did look so cool on John Elway when he wore it for one game way back when. I think it was against the Chargers. Now I wish the team would wear the orange jersey as a standard uniform. There's just no pleasing me I guess.

Right, this is the 50th Anniversary of the AFL, so there'll probably be a season-long patch too.

I should think more than two games for throwback unis, though ... we have two throwback styles, I'd like to see both of them twice.

There are more than two throwback styles. Not sure ANYBODY is nostalgic over the first ones though.

I'd like to see the 80s style throwbacks sometime next season.

Houstonist is giving you a fair warning. At least a year in advance. Don't roll over next year when you're tuning into some NFL football and you notice the Houston Oilers playing the New York Titans in Nashville. Why you ask? It's the 50th anniversary of the AFL and the NFL will honor the original AFL teams next year.

Tennessee Titans owner, K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr., said he will honor the Oilers teams when they play the New York Jets, originally the Titans, by breaking out the old Columbia blue uniforms.

The Oilers uniforms will make a second appearance when Adams' team squares off against the team formerly known as the Dallas Texans, now the Kansas City Chiefs. Talk about weird; the two original Texas teams playing a game in Missouri.

What do you think Houston? Will you be happy to see that oil derrick on the side of the helmet again?

I think HOU shou have just reinstated the old Oiler unis when they came back. Those were great. But TENN has similiar colors so that was out. They could have scemed the colors to the old school HOU Oilers colors though.

I perfer the Syracuse orange of the early to late 70's myself, but it's all good.

And now with Shanahan gone, the chances for seeing the throwbacks, as well as more of the new orange jerseys, has increased....even if you were a Shanahan fan, this is nothing but a plus.

That things Sharpe is wearing above is terrible. That orange helmet was a joke. But the unis were cool.

From 1967 to 69, we wore the reddish orange jersies, instead of the Tennessee Orange of prior years. And in 68 and 69 we wore reddish orange pants for road games.

That would be cool to see again. They should honor Marlin Briscoe by putting Denver in those 1968 uniforms for this celebration. And wheel out Lou Saban in a chair and throw bread at him too.

Now that's what I wanna see again...but they'll probably trot out the same ones they wore in 94. That's okay, I perfer the ink blot (hell, I'd almost perfer anything) over the cyber thing that's currently the logo.

I really wish we would mix it up with our uniforms more. I'd love to see the throwbacks (not the AFL ones) worn every once in a while. I'd also love it if we were to rock the Orange Alternates more often. How does this sound?

Division Games: Orange Alternates
Out-of-Division Night Games: All Blues
Out-of-Division Home Games: Standard Uniforms

^ yeah why not. I like it. Only thing is isn't this a problem with NFL merchandising though? Chargers are the only team to consistently change it up and wear their old powder blue uniforms, right?

No, there are several teams that wear alternates every year. Baltimore and Philly with their all-blacks, Miami with their orange jerseys, the Bengals have a few variations as well. I think you have to let the league know before the season about the jerseys you'll wear, but the bottoms you can choose that day.

This is such an awesome picture. So far removed from the D now. In talent. In attitude. In desire. Everything.

Tom motivating. Foley, Swenson, Wright. Carter. Thompson. Randy. All of them looking spent. You never had to question their heart.

I see at least 3 Hall of Famers right in this pic.

Damn. I wish I knew that my defense watching experience was going to peak before I turned 7.

The uniforms we wore on Thanksgiving day in 2002 were awesome. They seemed to be brighter than when we got rid of them in 1996.

I still like the current uniforms best though.

We wore these road jersies from 1968 to 1971 before John Ralston returned us to white on white unis for road games.

We wore these reddish orange pants from 68-71 and they were cool as hell.

Let's wear these for a road game.

We brough back orange pants for 11 games in 78 and 79, but they were the "new orange" shade we adopted in 1978, and they weren't nearly as cool as these ones from 68-71.

This is what we wore in 78 and 79. I'd settle for these if we could get them. It's a more straight orange than the red-orange and you can see how much lighter in shade they were.

Craig Morton ready to hand to Dave Preston in what may have been one of the first "Sunday Night Football" games. This was ABC's Sunday Night Football.

The Broncos beat Oakland in their place 21-6.

So is it one home game and one road game each?

I'd love to see the Chargers wear their white tops w/ the Powder Blue Numbers and Yellow Pants. But they have to be the old style jersey not the new one. They always wear the powder blue at home, but on the road would be nice.

Who are the original 8?

Chargers, Broncos, Titans (Jets), Chiefs (Texans), Raiders, Oilers (Titans)...I cant think of the last 2???

Quick Search shows it was the Bills and the Patriots

Article on Chargers.com confirms that AFL teams will ear Throwbacks in 2 games next year:

http://www.chargers.com/news/press-releases/press-release-20090205.php

"The NFL also will highlight the 50th Anniversary during two “Legacy Weekends” this season. During one home and one road weekend, the Chargers and the other original AFL teams will meet head-to-head while wearing their chosen Throwback uniform. "

It's tucked away in a closet, but I have a full-sized one signed by Elway. It's unfortunately one of the signed items of his that doesn't look exactly like his signature. It came from a good source, but it looks slightly different than the others that I have.
