As a stat fan, it is fun to look at Albert Pujols stats every year.

.328 (6th in majors) with 45 HRs (1st in majors) and 121 RBIs (2nd in majors) .449 OBP (1st in majors) .687 slugging% (1st in majors) 1.136 OPS (1st in majors) with a 104 walk to 56 k ratio and toss in 14 stolen bases....that is pretty incredible.

It is incredible, and if you look at his pay compared to others, its unfair. He isnt even in top 20 highest paid players. Does he stay a Cardinal? Only if he doesnt get greedy.

7 years/$100M (2004-10), plus 2011 club option

7 years/$100M (2004-10), plus 2011 club option

signed extension with St. Louis 2/19/04 (avoided arbitration, $10.5M-$7M)
04:$7M, 05:$11M, 06:$14M, 07:$15M, 08:$16M, 09:$16M, 10:$16M, 11:$16M club option ($5M buyout)

Pujols is signed through 2011 if you include the team option, but if they don't get him extended by mid season next year, they've got a problem.

It was a very fair contract when he signed it in '04, but he's clearly outperformed it.

I was thinking the same thing.

Do you think they give him 20 mil a year? Or keep him around 16 mill a year if they try to resign him.

Definately, do you think the cards will get fair with him next year? Or try to convince him to stay in STL for around the same money? It might be tough for them to do that when Tori Hunter, Barry Zito, Soriano, and Magglio Ordonez make more then him.

Having said that, it doent seem like Pujols is a greedy guy, but I know even at work its frustrating when someone is doing a worse job then you and getting paid more, but I dont make 16 mill a year so I guess I would be a little more happy if I did.

If they don't (get fair with him), I think he leaves. He's a $30 million player in today's market. Or more. I have to think that Bill DeWitt understands his market well enough to know that you don't let the best player in the history of the franchise (yes, I remember Stan Musial) walk away. If Albert settles for 6 years $150 million, the Cards have done well.

Cardinals finish the sweep of the Brewers 5-1, as Wainwright moves to 18-7.

Derek Jeter ties Lou Gehrig for most hits as a Yankee with his 2,721st hit tonight.

At 35, Jeter has a chance to accumulate a lot more hits.

I could see him getting to around 3,600 career hits.

That would put him in the top five on the all-time hits list.

It's amazing to me that the New York Yankees franchise has never had a 3,000 hit guy to this point in history, while the San Diego Padres (Tony Gwynn), Milwaukee Brewers (Robin Yount) and Kansas City Royals (George Brett) do.

Honestly, there is a big deal about him being the Yankees all time hits leader, but I don't care. Great for Yankee fans, but I simply don't care who is the Yankees hits leader.

That said, I don't think he'll wind up with that many hits. I really think his skills will really go down later in his career.

Zack Greinke pretty much solidified his grip on the Cy Young with his win against Boston today.

Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.26 ERA in his past five starts.

15-8 with a 2.08 ERA and 229 Ks.

Greinke would have 20 wins if he was on a decent team.

You can make a solid case for Felix Hernandez as well, but I have to give the nod to Greinke at this point.

Of course, each pitcher should get a few more starts this year to make their case.

broncocalijohn
09-23-2009, 11:19 AM
Crime if Greinke doesnt get it. He has a ton of great games that he pitched w/o getting a decision or being stuck with a loss. Dominating on a bad team like Steve Carlton did in the 70s with the Phillies. Looks like my Angels will be playing the Red Sox again to advanced to the Championship game.

NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Braves announced Bobby Cox will retire as manager after the 2010 season.

The team says Cox agreed to a one-year contract extension for 2010, then will start a five-year consulting agreement to advise the team in baseball operations.

Cox managed the Braves from 1978 to 1981, switched to manage the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982 to 1985, then returned to manage Atlanta in 1990.

Felix Hernandez has more starts (20) than Greinke (15) where he has gone 7+ IP with 2 or less earned runs so I can see the argument for him.

However, nobody in baseball is pitching better than Greinke right now. He is the filthiest pitcher in baseball.

Cox will be a loss to the game of baseball. My favorite skipper of the old school guys still around (LaRussa, Piniella, Leyland, etc.). He was voted as the manager that most players would want to play for in a recent poll.

The umpires will be glad he's gone though. From the first pitch, Cox is on the edge of the bench, yapping at them all game long, riding them like a jockey.

Come on! I am a purist. There's an American League strikeout title and a National League strikeout title:D

Regardless of what happens, Verlander's K total will be more impressive because he doesn't have the luxury of facing a pitcher 2-3 times a game.

Porcello has worked in the slider a lot more as the season has gone on. I think he has ditched the curve ball, which was hanging on him during his rough stretch in the middle of the season in favor of the slider as his breaking ball.

He likes the four seam fast ball and he has a nice sinker as well. The sinker is a tough pitch when he is on.

WASHINGTON -- Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp celebrated a quarter century of life on Wednesday while Dodgers fans are celebrating a rising star who has a good shot of reaching a statistical plateau that has never been reached in the more than 100-year history of the franchise.

Kemp is aiming to become the first Dodgers player to hit .300 with 25 homers, 100 RBIs and 30 steals in one season. Through Wednesday, his 25th birthday, Kemp was hitting .304 with 25 homers, 97 RBIs and 34 steals in 149 games.

Already, he is only the sixth player in Dodgers history to have 20 homers and 30 steals in one season, and the first since Raul Mondesi in 1999.

There will be those who tell you that they knew this is what they'd eventually see from the gifted but raw young athlete drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of high school in Oklahoma, where he turned down an offer from the Sooners to play shooting guard and instead opted to focus on baseball.

Even veteran manager Joe Torre is impressed at the turnaround Kemp has made.

"Where Matty was last year at this time vs. this year at this time is just remarkable how far he's come," said Torre. "We all know he's got tools and high expectations, but how he's improved his game over the last year has been very impressive."

From Bernie Miklasz' (St Louis Post Dispatch) blog:

"Good day to youÖ
I wanted to follow up on a theme that I initiated in last Sundayís column, when I mentioned the Cardinalsí dominant success in the NL since the start of the 2000 season.
With the Cardinals on the verge of clinching their 7th spot in the postseason in the last 10 seasons, itís an appropriate time to pause and reflect on the great run of baseball weíve seen in St. Louis.
We all tend to get caught up in the daily drama of lineup decisions, strategy calls, roster moves, payroll fluctuations, flash controversies, etc. Thatís baseball. But at times itís easy to lose sight of the bigger picture: the consistent and sustained success of this winning organization. Like anyone else, I do my share of complaining and second-guessing. But I donít take this era for granted.
The Cardinals are easily the NLís Team of the Decade.
(OK, I know some of you insist that the Ďdecadeí began in 2001. Whatever. For accounting purposes, Iím going to go back to the start of 2000.)
No National League team has come close to matching the Cardinalsí level of achievement.
Anyway, letís go to the standings.
Through Thursday night, hereís the list of wins by NL teams since the start of the 2000 season:"

1. STL 911 (.566 winning pct.)
2. ATL 888 (.552)
3. LAD 859 (.533)
4. SF 849 (.528)

14. MIL 736 (.457)
15. MTL-WASH 704 (.438)
16. PITT 675 (.420)
What about postseason wins?

Cardinals have typically owned the Dodgers this decade. It's the one team I'd like to avoid.

It's conceivable the Rockies might blow it (seeing they play the Cards, Brewers, and Dodgers in LA) and the Braves (play the Nationals 7 times, and 3 games at Florida) get in.

Under that scenario the playoffs would shape up to be Cards vs Phillies and Dodgers vs Braves.

As of today (and more realistic scenario) it is the Dodgers vs Phillies, and the Cardinals vs Rockies.

TORONTO -- Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki was ejected from Saturday's 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays for arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning.

It's the first ejection of the season for the Mariners and the first of Suzuki's career, including his years in Japan.

Suzuki used his bat to draw a line on the outer edge of the plate, indicating that David Purcey's strike three pitch was outside. Home plate umpire Brian Runge immediately ejected Suzuki, who argued briefly before being escorted off the field by manager Don Wakamatsu.

Bucs closing in on 100 losses whoohoo!! Ha!

Surprised it is taking them this long Hilarious!
My Angels finally got some hitting going with 10 runs. Unfortunately, they let the A's come back from a 7 run deficit and win 15 to 10. Pitching finally went south when the hitting took off. Rangers will be in town on Monday and they wont be eliminated regardless of Sundays games. Ugh!

Torre tied Braves manager Bobby Coxís record of reaching the playoffs in 14 straight seasons. Cox led Atlanta to 14 consecutive division titles from 1991-2005. Torre made the postseason during all 12 years he managed the New York Yankees from 1996-2007, then did it with the Dodgers the past two seasons.

Cardinals are playing a hangover lineup today that includes Khalil Green in center field, no Holliday, Julio Lugo at 2nd, and LaRue behind the plate. Molina is banged up, which explains LaRue.

edit: oops. rookie infielder tyler greene in center, not Khalil. Rookie David Freese at 3rd.

The Tigers start a HUGE 4 game series with the Twins tonight.

They are up 2 games in the division on the Twins right now.

We need at least a split in the series.

That would leave us with a 2 game lead with 3 games to go.

Watching the highlights and beer bath now. Santana wins it and will be our starter that goes to the Bullpen. If Scioscia goes with 3 pitchers, how would you like to choose from Lackey, Weaver, Kazmir and Saunders for the starting role? Saunders has been a phenom since coming back from the DL and Kazmir has pitched good or great in every start. This guy can pitch in Boston if asked to do it. If there is ever a year to beat the Red Sox, this is it. Way to go Halos!

What would CB24 do then? Not worried about it. Just need the one win or the Rockies lose vs the Brewers, Dodgers have not lost more than 5 in a row this season.

Secondly lets inject some facts into this conversation instead of mindless drivel from rival fans that are jealous of the Dodgers.

* In 2006, the Dodgers won their last seven games, six on the road, and finished 9-1 in their last 10 games. Then they got swept by the Mets.

* In 2008, the Dodgers finished just 4-5 in their last nine games, all at home. Then they swept the Cubs, who had the best record in the National League.

* There's no significant relationship to how a team finishes the season and how well they perform in the playoffs. (The numbers don't lie.)

If the Rockies lose tomorrow, the final series is pointless.

Why exactly would rival fans be jealous of the Dodgers? The fact that every other team in the division has been to the WS since the last time the Dodgers went? The fact that despite having a huge payroll, the Dodgers are routinely outperformed by the smaller market teams in their own division? The fact that the Dodgers routinely choke postseason after postseason? Nah, nobody's jealous of the Dodgers, we just can't wait to see them fail. Again.

Any team getting 2 times in 3 years is freaking awesome considering how often teams have had to deal with playoff dynasties... ie the Yankees (recently the Red Sox too) and Braves who have practically been in the playoffs every year for almost 2 decades, leaving 3 spots.

The Diamondbacks were owning the NL West for a while too.

Funny you call the Ducks Dinosaurs when one of the "dinosaurs" was sent to the Flyers. Also, you still cant admit that all those trades last year got us players under 26 and younger. Those dinosaurs got us to game 7 against the Red Wings. Ryan Smyth should help you a ton but you wont finish ahead of the Ducks. Plus, jealous of the Dodgers? Why in the hell would an Angels fan be jealous? We were ranked as the #1 best value for all of sports. Since 2002, we made the playoffs all but one year. We dont get bumped for Dodgers on TV as we both have our own stations and the Register has Angels as priority #1 before the Dodgers so I dont see the LA Times. Only thing that bothers me is local news showing Dodgers first in their broadcast no matter what. That little significance doesnt add up to being jealous. Try again. Maybe if you idiot Pirates fans would actually start holding the FO and the owners accountable instead of just blaming your woes on the manager, then you wouldn't have such a garbage team to watch.

That crap won't flush Karen....and they won in the 90's, try again.

It's to be expected though from people like you who never watched the team play when he was their manager. He was negligent to say the least. He toyed with successful pitchers mechanics (Duke just recovered this season from it, Ollie Perez has never recovered from it) and played scubs like Joe Randa over the likes of Freddy Sanchez. When they won, it was all because of him and when they lost, he'd hang one select player out to dry in the media. Maybe he learned something from the whole experience because afterall, the only job he could get after that performance was that of a bench coach. I'm happy for the Rox that he's at least trying to do his job this time around anyways.

Simple, we didnt change the name, the owner did to get a bigger cut of your county and it is working. Raider fans at Dodger Stadium doesnt excite most families. Hell, the co-host of 640KFI in the afternoons (1million listeners) takes his family from West side to Angels stadium because of the "gangsta" lifestyle at the park.

Your owner will never get the following the Dodgers have, period.

I don't think it's so much "Gangsta", though if you sit in the upper deck plaza, you might run into a few of those types. However by and large the Dodger fans are more vocal and passionate than Angel fans who are pansy suburbanites bandwagoners, that have zero clue about the game. They might do a golf clap if there is a HR. Pretty much that is all Anaheim is, a suburb, there is no culture there...BO-RING.

I said no matter what. As in if Dodgers are on a 3 game losing streak and Angels just pitched a one hitter for their 6 win of the year. That type of stuff. And dont forget, the news goes to LA, OC and IE not just LA. That is my only complaint and dont watch much of the common news for sports anyways.

Awe...that's too bad...really.

We still have Jiggy, Teemu and Scott but of course they will and have got younger even though you failed to watch the news on the trades last year or see my posts on it.

Oh I watched TSN tradetracker at the deadline. I said Pronger should be traded because you guys peaked out...Dinos didn't make the deal but lo and behold they do it at the draft. Dinos are trending downwards, Kings are ascending. Facts and point totals over the last few seasons say so.

I'll send out all the congrats in the world to the Rox, but I'll forever be resentful of Jim Tracy and the totally uninvolved, uncaring way he managed the Pirates. The Rox turnaround after he was named acting manager only tells me that those seasons in Pitt wouldn't have been quite the disasters they were had he and his staff gave half a heart and half a chance to the guys that they had to manage. They had talent enough to at least have a .500 season, so that he had nothing to work with crap just doesn't flush.

So congrats to the Rox and a big pox on Jim Tracy...here's hoping they keep winning in spite of him.

They were 20-32 with Hurdle. And 71-36 with Jim Tracy. Now sorry, but I really dont care what he did with the Pirates. Or Dodgers. Because the Rox have had their own demons with that kind of manager only his name was Jim Leyland.

But to me, that kind of massive turnaround from 1 manager to another says to me that either Tracy was the best manager in the league or Hurdle was the worst, or a little of both. Either way, Im very very happy with the job Tracy has done this year and hope he continues to plss off his former teams fans.

I resented it when Leyland retired mid-season with the Rockies and didn't tell anyone, and I can see why Hogan feels that way about Tracy.

I didn't want Leyland back for that very reason.

I do resent Tracy, but it's old news. The evidence is pretty clear he was just collecting a check in Pittsburgh and was a liability doing so (anyone who disagrees never watched any of the games whilst he was there).

My hope for you Rox fans is that he doesn't turn apathetic somewhere down the line and do the same thing to the Rockies. He appears to be a decent manager when he actually tries and has a job to fight for.

All that said, I'll take the Rox over any of the other NL teams in the post season because I'm sick and tired of seeing the usuals all the time (StL, PHI, LA)

LOL!!!

The Rockies are the compelling story in the playoffs. Dudgers, not so much. Rockies are on a four game win streak. Dudgers are on a four game losing streak (home games, too). The Rockies would be the sentimental favorites, while the Phillies are probably favored to win the National and be in the WS against the Yankees.

Since June, the Rockies have had the best overall record in Baseball. The Dudgers, not so much. One can argue that the Dudgers have lost considerable "juice" to their season, swooning badly over the last half of the season and losing ground. The Rockies have been pushing, winning and gaining ground. Despite the bluster and claims of "elite" status, the Dudgers are just another baseball team, nothing special.

I do not know how this weekend will turn out, and in the larger picture, it doesn't matter. The Rockies have had a h3ll of a season. The Dudgers have barely met expectations...........

Choke on it.......

Depends on how you look at things. If you look at how Detroit and Minnesota have been playing lately, the Tigers probably have about a 15% chance of locking it up. But no team in MLB history has lost the division in the last week of the season while being in first from May 10th on.

Of course, no NFL team had ever lost a 3 game division lead with 3 weeks to go until last year.

Jackson's Hole across the street from Coors (on 20th) runs a great free shuttle to Invesco for Broncos games, then it would bring you right back for the Rocks game.

Thanks, thats a GREAT way to do it! Now if I can just find out for sure when the Rockies Game 4 will be played...

jcIt's not announced yet. Rockies will probably need to win a game first.

Unfortunately the Rockies are mediocre against lefties and the Phils will be going Lee, Hamels, and probably Happ, all southpaws. I don't like Colorado's chances but hope I'm wrong!
