Mary Hicks "Bill Hicks mom" Tonight on Letterman ...
plus the bit that was banned from TV back during the 90s...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#Censored

On October 1, 1993, Hicks was scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman for the twelfth time, but his entire performance was removed from the broadcast -- the only occasion, up to that point, in which a comedian's entire routine had been cut after taping. Both the show's producers and CBS denied responsibility. Hicks expressed his feelings of betrayal in a hand-written, 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker.[8] Although Letterman later expressed regret at the way Hicks had been handled, he never appeared on the show again. The full account of this incident was featured in a New Yorker profile by Lahr. This profile was later published as a chapter in John Lahr's book, Light Fantastic.[9]

Mary Hicks is scheduled to appear on "The Late Show" on Friday, January 30, 2009, with ads for the show indicating Letterman will show at least some of the censored Hicks appearance.[10]

Thank you for posting this. Hicks truly was ahead of his time, and I feel bad for anyone who just doesn't get him. It's amazing to listen to his stuff now, still so relevant after 15 years.

ps, in case anyone cares... I discovered Bill after buying Tool's Anemia album. There is a painting of him in the liner notes titles "Another dead hero" Several of the songs on that album are based on Bill's routines.

Not many right wingers find Bill funny. To me, he was a genius. And LEary stole the Jim Fix bit and didn't do it better. Maybe you should stick with Carlos Mencia?

Ahh, a Bill follower.

Hix fanboys are among the most cultish of any entertainment cultish followers. They adamantly refuse to acknowledge the fact that Hicks wasnt funny, that he only appealed to left wing nutjobs and far left socialists, which is why he failed as a comedian to get national attention and only has a small, albeit dedicated following of groupies.

And Leary does do it better. Leary does the angry comic routine better than Hix ever could dream of doing.

Carlos Mencia...haha. That guy sucks.

I always thought Hicks was great, but it's certainly edgy stuff. I'm actually suprised that Alec doesn't like him. He seems to share a lot of personality traits with Bill.

The weakness of Bill's comedy (if you can really call it comedy) was how hate filled it was. Bill wasn't just annoyed - he seemed to genuinely hate other people. It put a damper on some of his bits.

What people saw in him is what no one sees in Leary . Hicks was Carlin , Bruce ground breaking . Leary is a sell out hack .

To each his own tho ...

Hicks to me was one way i always kinda how i judged people .
If you was into history , current events and real life issues that you understand the jokes and are smart enough to know what he is talking about , then you are the kinda person I want to talk to ... IF you like weak ass comics , dick jokes , typical sap bit humor you are most likely to stupid for me to hang out with .

And yea Taco , Righties normal hate Bill , didn't stop me tho , and everyone says I'm so Right wingish ... Hard to not like someone that talented ...

Letterman is a hack sell out like i mentioned in my last post ....
He straight lied last night

They pulled that bit in the 90s do to the fact the same night a Pro life group was paying for ads on that nights show ... It was money ... and most likely NBC's call not Dave to pull the bit ....

yea wasn't a tamed version of some of his bits . OK for TV .
He softened a lot of it for TV at nbc's request and then they still F'ed him over and cut it from the show ....

During the joke about Jesus not coming back cause we are still wearing crosses he removed part of it . He didn't do the actual punch line to the whole bit which is Do you think Jesus wants to ever see a cross again ? It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a sniper rifle pendant. ... and saying just thinking of John .. which is way funnier ...

so let me get this straight rock chalk....because leary PERFORMED hick's material "better" he was funnier?

do we not give credit to the actual funny person who wrote the actual funny material?

the truth, you don't agree with his politics, so you react way off base and ignore his talent because of this.

than you accuse him of not being funny because he leaned too far to one side with his politics. do you see the humor in that, or do you want me to have denis leary read this to you?

as someone left leaning, even I can admit when someone right wing is funny.

I keep seeing that Ron Howard is working on a Hicks life story movie .
I think that may have been another reason they had his mom on Letterman kinda getting Bill back in the public eye and prepping for film , besides fixing something that was bothering Dave ... I still think NBC pulled that bit not Dave over ad dollars and Dave still felt bad ... And kinda fell on the sword and didn't throw nbc under the bus , or maybe he legally can't .

Russell Crowe has been mentioned as one of the producers and may portray Hicks as well.

I almost think Crowe might work as good to play Bill then anyone else i can think of really ... Kinda same look , and Crowe should be able to get the attitude right ... Pretty sure he was always a big Hicks fan ...

No, let's clear the air here. SOME people think Leary stole Hicks act, but the truth is, Leary was doing his thing BEFORE Hicks first hit the scene. If anything, it could be argued that Hicks bit off Leary's schtick.

Not like it matters though. This is common in comedy. People steal each other's **** all the time. Eddie Murphy straight jacked Pryor's stuff, and Carlin nibbled from the Pryor and Redd Fox repetoir.

Chris Rock continues the thievery.

How was Leary any different? The times I saw his stand up, he was firmly entrenched in the whole "angry young comics" genre that gave us Hicks, Kinnison, Clay & Slayton amongst others in the early 1990's. The only difference as far as delivery I can see is that Hicks wasn't as "in your face" as Leary was (unless provoked by hecklers), perferring a more subtle approach.

Hicks biggest mistake was an overestimation of his audience. Generally people don't get (nor desire) a comic who tries to make them think.

Actually, Hicks admitted that he stole Leary's act: "I have a scoop for you. I stole his act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did."

Haha, Bill Hicks fanboys are ****tards.

Two of these douchebags have such a hard on for this unfunny ass dead dumb**** that they felt it necessary to give me neg rep.

Proves my point about these douches.

I wouldn't call myself a Hicks fanboy, though I do enjoy his comedy. And anyone who thinks Dennis Leary is funny, let only funnier than Hicks, does not know comedy from a hole in their ass.

I think rock chalk's problem with hicks is he didn't swear enough.

leary had to cover up his deficiencies and lack of talent with crudeness....

no wonder rock chalk likes him.

even for you, this level of doucheness throughout this thread is overboard.

Strip all the social relevance , intellect , and the ability to make people think as well as laugh , from Bill Hicks and you have Dennis Leary ...

If it wasn't for Mtv and those Cindy Crawford ads with him making ignorant sounds in a mic I doubt his career would have went anywhere.

Most people like stupid comics tho , so this don't surprise me really , Leary , Carrot Top , Gallagher , Larry the Cable guy , Dane Cook ... the list goes on and on . Stuff they don't have to think to much about , or challenge them mentally ...
