HAYNESWORTH NOT INTERESTED IN “HOMETOWN DISCOUNT”
Posted by Aaron Wilson on January 30, 2009, 10:08 a.m. EST

Unlike Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs’ stated willingness to give his team a “hometown discount” to remain in Baltimore as well as fellow impending free agents Ray Lewis and Bart Scott, Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth isn’t embracing that idea as he approaches free agency.

Haynesworth is looking to cash in with the Titans as much as possible. He’s reportedy seeking a six-year contract that would make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league.

“Not unless they give me a 100 percent guaranteed contract,” Haynesworth said when asked if he would be open to possibly taking less money to re-sign with Tennessee. “You want to try and make as much as you can because if you have a career-ending injury you are out … and the team sure as heck is not going to pay you. It’s not like baseball or basketball. You want to get as much as possible.

“I’m not Terrell Suggs, that’s all I can say. He was saying they’d all stay and take a hometown discount, but it is kind of hard now being in the NFL and that contract is not guaranteed. My agent knows what we want to get and he has a number he wants to get. … I just want some money.”

Negotiations have been slow so far, according to Haynesworth who didn’t like the Titans’ initial offer. Haynesworth was the Titans’ franchise player last year, triggering incentives that prevent the Titans from using the tag again to retain his rights.

Haynesworth was named to his second Pro Bowl, recording 8 1/2 sacks last season.

/Pass on Gerard Warren thought process. He will never play at this level again.

Sure he could play it... but the skill set you would be paying for is a 4-3 DT. No way would you drop that kind of coin on a 3-4 DE... and i would be willing to bet my life he has 0 interest in playing NT.

It is, but Jenkins and especially Rogers had that same skill-set and turned it into dominating performances as 3-4 NTs.

Regardless, the kind of money he wants is absurd for a 3-4 NT. Completely absurd.

The only thing I ever fault players for when they say stuff like this is that they weren't smart enough to just keep their opinion to themselves. Otherwise, you want to blame a guy who wants to make as much money as he can? I don't. The NFL isn't a place that inspires a lot of benevolence to your employer, in my opinion.

Now, if you're talking about staying with a team like the Patriots, where you've won a few Super Bowls, then I could see it - a little. But how many Super Bowls has he won in Tennessee?

I agree with everyone who says Haynesworth will be **** as soon as he gets his pay day. He didn't start playing well until his contract was over. I'd rather see someone like Julius come in who has played his ass off since he came up. However would he fit a 3-4?

I agree. He not worth the set back financially.
Draft a big clogger. Dorrell Scott, Terrance Taylor or Chris Baker.

Who is worth the money this year?

Bart Scott
Terell Suggs
Channing Crowder
Andra Davis
Sean Jones
OJ Atogwe
Chris Canty
James Sanders
Jermaine Phillips
Shaun Cody

Any of these guys to me are worth the money, and should be pusued depending on need. Obviously not all of them.
The franchise tag period begins Feb5 through Feb 19th i think. Hopefully the Rams FO are on vacation those weeks and they forget to franchise Atogwe.

Haynesworth and any other NFL player would be a fool to offer discount to the team. If a player doesn't perform well or gets hurt, the same team that is looking for loyality will be all business. Ask LT how much his loyality is worth these days. The numbers are big, and I think he is great, but when you have lots of holes on D, blowing your wad on one peg isn't going to get it done.

I don't disagree with the philosophy and I would do the same in his position. But where's the tact? That he's coming right out looking like a douche bag saying it reminds of the man who stepped on Cowboys' center's face. You might say "well he's a straight shooter" and I would say fine. But it also irks me that he isn't interested in going to a winner or getting a ring. He only wants his pay day. That doesn't sound like someone who's going to come through in the clutch for your club.

How do you determine a winner anymore? One year a team sucks and the next they are in the SB. I'm sure everyone said the same thing when Reggie White went to the Packers too. I agree you might as well get paid as much as you can while you can.

Holy crap - disruption in the backfield is two light years ahead of where we have been the last two seasons. SOLD, i'll take disruption. Then our safeties would actually look good.

I think it's worth watching the video that I've linked to. After reading the quotes, I felt like he sounded like an ass, although he does have the right perspective. Coupled with his face-stomping incident, I had a pretty low opinion of Haynesworth.

However, in that lengthy interview, he comes across as a guy who's articulate, and just being very matter of fact about his situation. I don't think he belongs in Denver from a schematic standpoint, but he seems like a guy who has his stuff together.

The Titans faded down the stretch when Haynesworth was out. When we played them in a Monday Night game a couple of years ago, Haynesworth was out...and we won. This tells me that the Titans are a completely different team without Haynesworth. He IS a difference maker. I just wish he didn't have the attitude he apparently exhibits in this article...

Yep and people were claiming he was a money chaser and he helped turn the franchise around. The go to a contender argument doesn't work as everyteam has a chance to make the playoffs except the KC Chefs, DET Lions, and Oakland Raiders and they won't offer the money required to get him.

Keep this 12 game a year playing, injury prone, head stomping, money grabbing fool away from our team. We don't need him. Imagine telling this man he has to be the NT, focus on taking up blockers, and being selfless so the LB's can make plays. HAH!

The Chiefs could very well do that.

Would give them a nice looking line, if they can get another DE in the draft.

This thread amuses me. Thank God there are other Denver fans who realize Fat Albert has only performed well close to contract years and fully expect him to return to mediocrity following being overpayed by some sap owner who has more money than sense. I just hope that owner aint Bowlen.

A very enjoyable set of clips. Shows some good pass-rush moves/technique, a good motor, and consistent up-field push. Will he provide it as consistently in the NFL? Not right away, and maybe never as consistently, but if he provides even a fraction of it from the NT position, he could be very effective. Didn't see him get double-teamed much though, either...

I liked that even on those plays where he was not directly involved in the tackle, he was disrupting the flow...

Besides, Albert cleated my boy's noggin ... I dunno if I could ever get past that.
