That's what is cool about art and having a thriving musical culture. So many types of bands there is something for everyone.

I just went to the NAMM (Natl Assc of Musical Merchants) show in Anaheim it was really cool musical experience. Got to meet some of my hero's in music and see some killer bands.

It's hardly snobbery. Nickleback is overproduced garbage that all sounds the same. It's cool to hate them because they are awful, redundant, uninventive clowns who have settled on forumula over imagination to create music.

So you're saying that the a violinist in the San Francisco Orchestra is unquestionably a better musician than Mark Knopfler?

Good thing these claims are impossible to prove, or you would have a very hard time backing them.

things like this are always opinion and can't be proved. If we only argued about things we could prove then the board would have about 3-4 threads.

I can say as a musician rock music is way easier to play then jazz or classical. It's not as complex in it's structure, melody, or harmony.

Mark Knopfler is a good finger picking guitar player but even he admits that his style is the only way that felt confortable to him. He then developed over the yrs and it became a technique other guitar players will now try and copy.

He for sure deserves accolades for that style. The thing is though there are jazz musicians who rule him in other styles. The are more well rounded when it comes to playing different ways. IE fingerpicking, slide, with a pick, etc etc.

As far as saying a musician who holds a seat in an orchestra is unquestionably better then Danny Carrey I would not agree with. I would say the very best classical violinist is better then they very best rock drummer in terms of musicianship.

Did you hear Yo Yo and Itzhak perform at the inauguration? forget about itthose 2 are so far above any rock musician its not even a comparison. Here's the thing I have over 100 thousands songs in my Itunes. Probably more rock then you have. I love rock I am not bagging on it. I doubt however you have listened to or studied jazz like I have. Many of the people that try and argue rock musicians are on the same level often haven't dived as deep into it as they have rock.

So you're saying that the a violinist in the San Francisco Orchestra is unquestionably a better musician than Mark Knopfler?
You believe that Charlie Parker is a better Saxophonist than Danny Carrey is a drummer?
Good thing these claims are impossible to prove, or you would have a very hard time backing them.

With regards to Danny:

IMO, he's one of the best percussionsists i've ever heard. NOt just a tool fanboy speaking - but in terms of what he does and how he does it... Not to mention his innovation in creating those new electronic drum heads.

things like this are always opinion and can't be proved.

No and I agree even though I dont know much about music , But Rock , country ,Gospel is pretty easy form of music . or so I was told , I cant read a note , cant even play a Kazoo ;D

I'm just an amateur compared to real pros but I have played enough to know rock and blues is easier to play them straight ahead jazz and classical. To be really good at any genre is hard and worthy of praise.

I don't like to say any music is worthless. If someone likes Nickleback and get's enjoyment out of listening then who am I to say that is crap? Music is in the ear of the person listening. Hard and difficult does not equal better.

I guess I should not have said better musicians, only that some musicians have a higher level of skill. Maybe that doesn't make then better only different.

I do know a lot more Jazz lovers that also listen to rock then the other way around.

Just in this thread you can see how some people see other music as lame or uncool. IMO there is no uncool music only different strokes for different folks.

Of course in any genre you will find some stuff that seems lame but hey bands like back street boys fill a niche. Who am I to judge?

for sure some players do both and choose to play rock. I'm not saying that some rock musicians aren't on that level. Many people don't know this but Steve Smith, the drummer for journey, now plays fusion jazz and is very good at it.

Ames I totally agree some rock musicians are amazing and can play any style they want. They choose to play rock. Rock is a great genre I have tons of it in my collection. I'm not a purist at all.

And yes I play some drums but on a really low level not good enough to be in a band on drums.

my favorite drummer of all time was Jeff Pocoro and he played all styles from pop smooth rock to Steely Dan albums. I also like Dennis Chambers. But some of my other favorites played rock like Carmine Apiece from Black Sabbath. By the way he's a huge jazz fan and I have been at the same shows as him checking out jazzers.

Also if you knew about Danny's background you would find he was taught jazz first by a really good teacher. He played in his HS jazz band etc. Jazz gave him that background to go to the rock genre and set himself apart from players who didn't study jazz.

Hey Spide!!!

Stick to the Foghat and Nazareth bro...no one these days even touches the 70s bands.

Nickelback is top 10 rock and nothing else. That's all they strive for and that's what they get. Lot's of money but the "fake rock" tag that goes along with it. There's alot of modern rock that kicks ass over much of the 70's rock, don't fool yourself.

But there I will say there was alot more talent in the 70's then there is now.

How about some America, BTO, Doobie Brothers, The Who, Elton John, George Thorogood, James Gang, Jethro Tull, Joe Walsh, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers Band, The Guess Who, The Steve Miller Band, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Starship.....................just naming a few. :approve:

dude, just because you can't understand him doesn't mean he is bad. Look at Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, you had to listen to each song 84000 times to get a hint of what the **** he was saying and he/they are considered one of the greatest of all times. And yes, I know it's for the change they brought, so no need to focus on that in your retort.

with that said, I am a child of grunge, loved PJ, Soundgarden, Nirvana, AIC, etc. and Nickelback tries hard to come close but fail miserably.

Maybe for his sound not for being "one of the worst".

People can listen to what they want, but for my money the great majority of music released these days is pure formulaic garbage with varying sound.

I have maybe a handful of songs on my ipod that have been released in this decade and that aren't from Tool, NIN, Rage, or Radiohead. I'll listen to anything but country, new rap, pop, and that pop rock garbage they're putting out these days (like Nickelback).

music doesn't have to be complex to be loved and be fun to listen to. Rock has soul and a great beat that people love me included.

Most people arguing against me though, trying to tout rock, aren't anything like me. I have everything from Black Sabbath to Motzart, Otis Redding to John Coltrane.

Rock music is great but as a musician I have to respect the skill it takes to play Motzart and Coltrane. It's just way harder then playing Elvis and the Beatles.

The thing is though, and I understand this, is that there have been some great songwriters in the pop music/rock genre that write lyrics people relate to.

I know you love music, as do I. I respect your opinion on the subject. You nailed it on your first sentence: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).

The most beautiful songs, regardless of genre are the simplist ones. R&R is simple, and easily expandible. This is why people can relate to it.

yawn... you guys comparing Nickelback to bands from the 90's and before are weaksauce.

If you keep it current you're looking at a choice between Lil Wayne, Akon, Jason Mraz, and Rhiana...

I'll take Nickelback, Daughtry, and David Cooke over them anyday. Please try to keep it current old men.

Yeah i meant the song "Guaranteed" that was nominated for a couple awards. I always say Hard Sun because thats the main one that people know from the movie. My bad.

IMO, the best songs are just jam sessions. That's why I love early Santana so much. They just jammed and it was awesome. "Soul Sacrifice" "Treat" and "Waiting" are some of my favorite songs.

I was poking around online today found a song Kurt Cobain redid by Blind Willie McTell "your southern can is mine".

Its good version has the guitar right to a T.

I try to go into more Jazz, Coltrain is good, Giant Steps is a really good album.

music doesn't have to be complex to be loved and be fun to listen to.

I'm not sure what you were getting at but maybe it was in there somewhere.

All music takes some talent to make but it takes a genius to create stuff like this
