Since we're coming up on the 2009 mock, I thought we could pass the time by talking about how we did in the 2008 mock.

My picks.

Rd 1 #2 - Glenn Dorsey/DT/LSU
Rd 2 #45 - Carl Nicks/OT/Nebraska
Rd 4 #107 - Zachary Bowman/CB/Nebraska
Rd 5 #167 - Chris Harrington/DE/Texas A&M
Rd 7 #198 - Corey McKeon/LB/Nebraska

UDFA

Sam Keller/QB/Nebraska
Evan Moore/TE/Stanford
Maurice Purify/WR/Nebraska
Bo Ruud/LB/Nebraska
Dantrell Savage/RB/Oklahoma State

Conclusions

Yeah, I definetly homered out in this draft. My luck went to hell right off the bat when Glenn Dorsey ended up in Mulletville. He was really nothing but average all year. Carl Nicks ended up falling all the way into round 5 but started 13 games for the Saints. I hear he played pretty well. Zack Bowman also fell to round 5 but he was named Special Teams Player of the week when he made a few crucial plays to seal a win against the Vikings. Unfortunately the injury he suffered in that game landed him on IR for the year.

Chris Harrington was picked a round too early. He had a good preseaon but did nothing during the regular season. Corey McKeon, who I thought might turn out to be a steal, went undrafted. I can't find him on any NFL rosters so I don't even know if he played in 2008.

My biggest coup might have been getting Bo Ruud in the UDFA. He was picked in round 6 by the Pats but ended up on injured reserve. He comes from a football family and the Pats do good with linebackers. Dantrell Savage looked like a decent kick returner for the Chiefs as well.

Overall, my 2008 draft didn't come close to the grand slam I hit in 2007 when I got Gaines Adams, Tony Ugoh, Eric Wright, Trent Edwards and Gary Russell. I guess if you want to be generous, you could say I "hit" on 3 of my 5 picks, but Nicks and Bowman were big reaches.

I'll definetly be looking to get back to my 2007 form in this years mock.

My picks:

1. James Hardy, WR, Indiana
2. Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC
3a. Duane Brown, OT, Virginia Tech
3b. John Sullivan, OC, Notre Dame
5. Bruce Davis, OLB, UCLA
6. Adrian Arrington, WR, Michigan
7. Erik Ainge, QB, Tennessee

UDFA: None

Analysis:

Hardy was a reach (though the guy I had targeted was the one actually taken by the niners). He was a major disappointment, finished on IR, and had only nine catches this season. Jackson recorded 2 sacks and is being labeled as a developmental player. Brown was a total steal getting him in the third as he played in all 16 games and was starting by the end of the year. Sullivan, Davis, and Arrington made their teams but were backups. Ainge was suspended for using a banned substance and then was placed on IR.

I got a steal in Brown and a bunch of back-up players. Jackson and Sullivan could turn into starters with some more coaching. Overall, I would give myself a solid C.

My Picks:

16(1): Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy - Drafted 11th overall, 5 picks ahead.
50(2): Chris Johnson, RB, E Carolina - Drafted 24th overall, 26 picks ahead.
81(3): Jason Jones, DE, Eastern Michigan - Drafted 54th overall, 27 picks ahead.
112(4): Kendall Langford, DE, Hampton - Drafted 66th overall, 46 picks ahead.
141(5): Durant Brooks, P, Ga. Tech - Drafted 168th overall, 27 picks behind.
176(6): King Dunlap, OT, Auburn - Drafted 230th overall, 54 picks behind.
207(7): Kerry Brown, OG, Appalachian St. - Undrafted.

UDFA:

Clyde Edwards, WR, Grambling State - Undrafted.
Mike Gibson, OG, California - Drafted 184th overall.
David Hale, OT, Weber State - Drafted 133rd overall.
Jamey Richard, C, Buffalo - Drafted 236th overall.
Ricky Santos, QB, New Hampshire - Undrafted.
Henry Smith, DT, Texas A&M - Undrafted.

Conclusions:

Leodis McKelvin had a modest year, however my standard for his success was whether or not Mike Jenkins had a better year than he did, and he didn't, so I count this one as a good pick. Chris Johnson was outstanding value, not just in comparison to where he was picked and where I picked him, but also how he performed. My best pick. Jason Jones had a pretty good year for the Titans, collecting 5 sacks and 31 tackles. He was also the Week 16 defensive player of the week, when he gained 3.5 of his 5 sacks. Kendall Langford had 31 tackles as well, and had only 2 sacks, but still had a solid season in Miami. Durant Brooks is a practice squad player. King Dunlap went on IR in the preseason, and did not have a chance to perform. Kerry Brown is actually on a roster, so yay for that! As far as my UDFAs are concerned...2008: Played in 6 games both from scrimmage and on special teams as a rookie David Hale saw action at RT against the Giants and at RG against the Eagles due to injury. Mike Gibson and Jamey Richard are both on NFL rosters still. Henry Smith has bounced around several teams rosters. Ricky Santos was on the Chiefs roster for a bit, but is now in the CFL. Clyde Edwards was on the Jags for a bit, and then was cut.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

Jacksonville Jaguars
1) Quinton Groves, DE, Auburn/Jaguars
-Played in all 16 games. 13 tackles, 2.5 sacks. Should be more productive in 2009.

3) Thomas DeCoud, Safety, California/Atlanta

4) Kevin Smith, RB, UCF/Detroit

-Picked up by the Giants and cut in training camp. Didn't get picked up until last week by the Raiders
7) Trae Williams CB, Univ. of South Florida
-Drafted by the Jaguars but didn't make it out of training camp. Just picked up by the Eagles last week.

UDFA's:
Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State/Bengals
-Played in 3 games and had 4 tackles. A project that may pan out for the Bengals if he can keep his head on straight.

Nehemiah Warrick, S, Michigan State/Giants
-Played in 1 preseason game before getting cut in training camp. May bounce around the league before he can find his niche in the league.

Marcus Dixon, DE, Hampton/Dallas
-Played in all 4 preseason games before getting cut. A major project.

Angelo Craig, OLB/DE/Cincinnatti/New England
-Played in all 4 preseason games before getting cut. Has talent to be a OLB in the 3-4 scheme.

Overall I was pleased how i drafted....especially Kevin Smith. Looking forward to drafting for the Jags in 2009!

Buffalo Bills Draft:

#11 Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma
#41 Jerod Mayo LB Tennesse
#42 Dre Moore DT Maryland
#110 Peyton Hillis FB Arkansas
#135 Brian Johnston DE Gardener-Webb
#139 Brad Cottam TE Tennesse
#170 Rocky Schwartz, S, Houston
#201 Ernie Wheelwright, WR, Minnesota

Undrafted players picked up:

Bradford, Mark (WR, Stanford)
Fontenot, Wilrey (CB, Arizona)
Richardson, Matteral (CB, Arkansas)

Probably the only players to have a serious impact would of been Mayo for New England and Hillis for Denver. Cottam will probably have a bigger impact for KC in the coming years but as for the rest, not much to speak about.
