During the Civil War, Lincoln appropriated powers no previous President had wielded: he used his war powers to proclaim a blockade, suspended the writ of habeas corpus, spent money without congressional authorization, and imprisoned 18,000 suspected Confederate sympathizers without trial.

Further more he only freed slaves in the southern states. He did not free them in the north or what was called the Union. He freed the slaves not because of the belief that we hold now, but because he and his "cabal" felt in would give them a military advantage.

When Lincoln suspended habeas corpus he did so WITHOUT congressional approval. Which is the body sanuctioned by the Constitution to suspend habeas corpus.

The Civil War was manufactured in the sense that humans made decisions to bring about it's birth. And it was very much about a power grab.
