Shanahan the Control Freak: Detroit

http://images.stltoday.com/stltoday/resources/detroitlions300dec19.jpg

The big question is if Ford really wants to win. Let's assume for a second he's willing to do a 180 with this organization.

Starting with the virtual blank slate known as the Lions, Shanahan would be assured more control than he could have on any other team, perhaps more than he had with the Broncos. He'd be the hero to his newly unemplyed inner circle, securing every single one of them a new job.

The press conference made clear how important the Broncos staff was to Shanahan, and how Bowlen doesn't plan on keeping any of them around.

If Shanahan is as much of a control freak as his critics claim, I can see him being happy in Detroit.

I heard somewhere that Shanahan did well with Hall of Fame QB's.

The big question is if Tony Dungy retires. Sources (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/05/early-signs-point-to-dungy-departure/) say there's a 70% chance. And would Shanahan be willing to settle for less control, and fewer job openings for his favorite staff?

Both Shanahan and Manning like to get in the way of the OC and call plays, but Elway liked calling his plays too, if I recall the fights with Wade correctly. I don't know much about Steve Young's temperment, but I do think Shanahan is willing to give up control when he respects the other decision maker.

Colts are short on money, true, but Shanahan is set for at least three years thanks to Bowlen. If Mike is serious about winning another super bowl, I don't see how he could turn the Colts down.

These are the two teams I keep thinking about for Shanahan, but I never see them being mentioned in the media.

Apparently, even the Houston Oilers have been linked with Shanny.

Didn't Mike say the situation would have to be perfect for him to consider taking a new head coaching job for 2009. I can't imagine a job more taylor fit for an offensive football mind than Indy. If Dungy does retire, I wouldn't be shocked to see Shanny walking the sidelines for the Colts this next season. It would be depressing, but it wouldn't be a shock.

I didn't think it was possible to hate Indy any more than i already do... This would do it.

Detroit would be like taking over a scrap yard. Sure, Ford would give Mike total control, but control of what? As far as Indy goes, what would Mike do there? The offense is already built. Manning is pretty much a coach on the field. Neither of those opportunities sounds very inviting for Shanahan, if you ask me. Dallas sounds like the perfect spot for Mike.

According to last nights 9 news sports cast (Denver), Peyton Manning contacted Shanny this past week.

But taking over Detroit could be a huge ego booster for Shanny, and let's face it, the only thing larger than Shanny's ego is the YPC surrendered by our D this year. Imagine it, Shanny swoops in, immediately makes the lions respectable, and gets them to the playoffs in 2-3 years. He would be first ballot HOF guaranteed.

Good call JCM, plus if he fails in Detroit, it would be hard to blame him, whereas if he fails to get Indy to the playoffs, that HoF invite could be revoked.

The Colts have Dungy´s successor already in Jim Caldwell.

I still believe he goes to a better team because building teams esp D's is not one of his strong points. I do agree in Detroit he would have zero pressure and lots of high picks to work with something he didn't have here.

I forgot about Indy.

That could be a scary combo with Shanny and Manning.

They also need to address their D to get to the next level though it was nice to watch Indy sniffing out the Chuggers Screen pass all night. I have never seen Rivers forced to ground the ball on that many screens in one night.

Agree, Shanahan in Indianapolis is bad for the rest of the AFC. That defense is good enough to win with a better gameplan on offense, they essentially did it without a run game, something for which Shanahan is exactly what the doctor ordered.

But that's a pill I can swallow.

I have no problem with Indy every Sunday they're NOT playing the Broncos and it's nearly impossible to NOT like Peyton Manning, imo. Mike deserves playing with a guy like that.

That's significantly better than having to play him twice a year in an AFCW job, too.

Promote Dennison or Bates to HC, Shanny to Dallas the fired Wade here as DC.

This is the KISS plan

Detroit GM is looking for former Detroit Players to take over, and they have no interest in Shanahan. There is a reason they are so ****ing bad.

Detroit, is an iteresting possibility, their defense is a lot better than ours, they have one of the best up and coming WR in the league, get them a RB and a QB with Shanahan coaching and that team could win 7 maybe 8 games next season.

that would be the ultimate test of Shanahan's worth. Can the mastermind turn around the worst franchise in football?

I was thinking Indy right off the bat, but nobody mentioned them until now.

Indy , really ...

For like the 200th time ...
On January 21, 2008, Dungy announced that he would return at least for the 2008 season. When he steps down, Jim Caldwell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Caldwell_%28football_coach%29) will take his place
