TAMPA - The Bucs and assistant head coach Larry Coyer have mutually agreed to part ways, Coyer said Wednesday.
"I truly have high regard for the Bucs and everybody with them," Coyer said. "I'll miss the team, but I've decided to pursue other things."
Coyer came to the Bucs after he was fired as defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2007. He spent one year as the Bucs' defensive line coach but was reassigned prior to the 2008 season.
Coyer is one of several Bucs assistants whose contracts are slated to expire in the coming weeks.
Others include tight ends coach Bob Casullo and linebackers coach Casey "Gus" Bradley.
In addition to possibly having to look for replacements for Coyer, Casullo and Bradley, the Bucs are also on the lookout for a secondary coach to replace Raheem Morris, who was promoted to defensive coordinator.
Morris, meanwhile, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the St. Louis head coaching position, but the Rams have yet to name him as a candidate or schedule an interview with him.

I really don't now alot about Morris, but I'm hoping by a "10" bowlen was talking of someone who at least has had some success as a coordinator, preferrably from the defensive side but OC/DC doesn't matter. Morris is a position coach, I think he needs a bit more time before signing up to something as hot as the Broncos headcoach. Morris is a box check for the minority Rooney rule, that is all.

I'm not saying to hire Coyer back or anything but weren't the Broncos like top 3 in stopping the run with Cleveland Brown Castoffs on the D line? Thats a HUGE upgrade to the type of D we have now.

We had two wins, actually.

But our owner believes in building through the draft.

Seriously though, how is Coyer an upgrade to your DC now?

Are you kidding me?

You give Gunther the Browncos and he'll start bitching about how the FO needs to sign Carlos Hall and Kendrell Bell.

Coyer will STFU and produce a top 10 defense...

I hope wherever Shanny goes he takes Slowick with him, he stood up for his pitiful performance here and I think it cost him his job, might as well stay with your wingman. Looking at Coyer as an upgrade to anyone is a testament to how badly Slowick sucked.

I didn't like the final season of Coyer as DC, but I think he'd be VERY valuable in the situation we're in with Pat looking for a young HC.

Bring Coyer in as an Asst HC and help use his many years of experience to ease the transition AND he'd be insanely valuable to the linebacking unit.

Why is Pioli leaving NE?

His miserable drafting the last three years is about to catch up to him and he realizes he needs to strike while the iron is hot. I know I'm in the minority about this because all the "pundits" are jizzing themselves over this guy for whatever reason, but trust me. I'm not guessing on this. Whoever signs him for big $ will regret it. Guaranteed.

I tend to agree with you. They've done nothing special in the draft recently which has forced them into the FA market (Moss, Welker, A. Thomas, etc.) although you must admit they've done a pretty good with FA's and they have hit on some draft picks here and there.

This one's for Bob:

We live in a world in which Mike Shanahan (two Super Bowl rings, 224-138 in Denver) just got canned by the Broncos and Herm Edwards (two career playoff wins, 2-22 in his last 24 games) kept his job in Kansas City.

Coyer doesn't want to be a head coach.

I'm not sure at his age without pro HC experience it would even be an option. He SHOULD be on a plane into town to be an Asst HC in the event we hire a young HC, imo, though.

He may not be....When Coaches often look to "pursue Other possibilities" they know that the writing is on the wall for the whole staff.

What is really interesting is the slow pace of things compared to the past. Both MIA and ATL were later in selecting Their GM's and then their HC's last year. I think that has influenced the pace this year.

The Coaching carousel is a mess too with Shanahan opening up the DEN picture as well as himself. No one Predicted that to happen and it has put a damper on some hiring's to date.

Plus, Almost All of the HC candidates are in the playoffs and several guys who would be Coordiantors too. The first wave of the carousel has not even begun to close before opening of the second wave this year. this really is going to be interesting the next few weeks ;D
