DENVER - A Web site documenting the prognosis of former University of Colorado quarterback John Hessler says he awoke from his coma on Friday.

The site says he’s no longer in critical condition and is now medically stable. It goes on to say, “his eyes are open, he is coherent, and following commands. He even smelled the popcorn being popped in the other room and wanted some!”

Hessler was driving east on I-76 between I-25 and 270 on Oct. 19 when an SUV clipped the back of his Honda. His car went spinning into oncoming traffic and was hit by a pickup truck. The SUV left the scene of the accident.

Police say the owners of the vehicle that may have caused the accident have disappeared. Investigators say Ricardo Anchondo-Gomez and Olga Huerta have abandoned their home and have not gone back to work.

Before the accident Hessler was working as an assistant coach at Regis High School in Denver. He was also a Colorado Rockies farm pitcher.
