View Full Version : Pete Carroll - a good fit

Believe it or not, he would not be a bad hire at all, if some of the other top coaches, such as Cowher, go elsewhere.

Why?

None of us know the future but 2 things really stick out when I look at some of these options.

1st - 9 of the past 11 Super Bowls were won by coaches who had been fired from a previous NFL team. Included on this list of successful retreads was Shanahan.

2nd - Pete's record at USC is a staggering 87–15 with a streak of 34 wins thrown in there. That's good recruiting but also damn good coaching.

I think you have to look at him. Give him an interview and see how it goes. He has experience in the NFL and has owned the college level for the past 3 or 4 years. Some say Shanny hasn't done well with understanding today's players. Not sure if I buy that but you know with Pete that won't be an issue. In fact, he is one of the best recruiters there is so you would have to say he is fantastic at understanding and communicating with the younger players.

Don't get me wrong, I would rather have Bill signed tomorrow but if he stays out of coaching or goes elsewhere, I would not be sorry at all if we gave Pete a shot. He's got something going, he's got "coaching momentum" if you will.

Thoughts?

No way he leaves USC for an NFL job when he's failed in the NFL once.

Maybe if the NFL did away with the draft and started allowing teams to recruit college players, it would be a good idea. Plus there are other reasons Ive mentioned in another thread.

My choice, but he will not take it, he runs a west coast offense, makes great half time adjustments. Of course he is just awesome on defense. He wants full control. Most people think he would only take a job in good weather conditions.

What part of 9 of the past 11 superbowls were won by coaches that were fired by an NFL team did you not understand. So he didn't do so hot his first time. Neither did Billicheat, Shanny, etc...

Dues - I heard some of those same things but NFL money talks. And I lived in CO for 15 years. Yeah it gets cold and there is some snow but it's a damn good football climate compared to a ton of other cities. But I agree, it would be hard for him to leave. He's got it going good right now. But, money always talks brother. Always.

I'm no college footbal-guru, but isn't he sort of on top of his game and living a pretty good life, here? I'd be very surprised if he came back to the NFL after the way his last stint went down.

Like Saban and Petrino, at the first sign of adversity in the NFL he would probably flee back into the welcoming arms of an NCAA team that would give him whatever he wanted. Plus Denver doesn't have as nice of weather as Cali, so recruiting is tougher.

No. College. Coaches.

Please.

Is there any chance we can get Gruden? Whats the situation in Tampa?

Just saying this because we need an offensive coach and is a hardass who will take the young players to task... the only hardass names being bandied around... marty, cowher, etc are defense guys....

chuckie is the only offensive guy with personality i could think of....

At USC Carrol gets to compete for the national championship every year, live in a warm weather local where he can go to the beach and he's making a ****load of coin. This guy is not some NFL assistant that landed a crappy team's HC spot and got dumped in 4 years only to get another chance with a new team. He had the ultimate media spotlight in New York and chose to go elsewhere. If I were him there's no way I'd return to the NFL, where he might be fired in 4 or 5 years. He's got a top 3 job in all of football right now. The reason I can see Myer at Floriday moving to the NFL is because he strikes me as a guy with something to prove. I don't see Carrol that way.

He coaches in a terrible conference that his team routinely outclasses. Then he loses one game to a random team from this conference each year and gets sent to the Rose Bowl (a home game!) where he gets to beat on a random team from another crappy conference. What part of this screams "ready for the NFL" to you?

He was the only coach in college that was allowed to have homes and cars bought for his players. He had the best players every year and hasn't won every year! In the NFL with everything being equal free agents follow money not coaches. Pass on Carrol

Carroll is going no where. He already a star without the NFL grind to take a toll on his life.
