I've noticed that when a coach leaves an organization, his favorite players and staff tend to follow. Dan Reeves took a bunch of our guys to the Giants for example.

So who will follow Shannahan?

Hell, the entire defense except Champ, and the rookies.

McCree, Manuel, Niko. And of course Nate Jackson.

Nate Webster
Boss Bailey
Selvin Young
Tatum Bell
John Engelberger
Jarvin Moss
Crowder
Slowik

I would be happy if the entire defense(except Champ and Rookies)
goes with Shanny.

I wouldn't worry about anyone of note leaving unless the new personnel want rid.

None of the FAs matter, Denver's way under the cap so no one needs to be cut, who does Mike want to trade for?

Who cares they are not under contract if they are going which means they aren't worth keeping.

I worry about Cutler and Marshall but I think if its handled right they will be fine too.

That would depend on where he went.

I definitely think he'd take some of our cast-off linebackers and running backs.

Can we merge this thread with the thread about which players are not worth being on the team next season??

Maybe, but if he goes to the Jets or Skins he'll need a qb! Do you remember what the vikes gave Dallas for that stud rb back in 1990? J Johnson turned all those picks into one fo the most dominant teams ever.

the only way they will leave is if Bowlen hires a bad coach who they hate and at FA they decide to walk. Also, Marshall won't leave if Jay is still here. and they have time left on their rookie deals so we don't have to worry about any of this for at least a year.

i pray that this doesnt turn into us losing a lot of the draft picks that he took...i hope its more like the shanahan thing, he took the team built by wade/reeves and made them into two time superbowl champs. with a 6th rd pick of his own of course.

i just hope the new coach doesnt decide to clean house and get rid of marshall, scheffler, cutler etc.

Who the hell will clean house and toss those players? Schefler is a top 10 receiving TE. Cutler and Marshal are obviously some of the most talented players in the game. Nobody is going to toss them out. Cutler will resign with the team. Franchise QB's never leave via FA unless the team doesn't want them back. Nobody is going anywhere and even if they wanted to we would just tag them.

I bet if we get a guy like Spagnolo we'll actually see some production out of Jarvis.
But yes, Nate Jackson is gone :(

Nobody under contract is leaving this year, certainly not Cutler or Marshall. Assuming Shanahan is coaching this year and not vacationing somewhere warm, he'll be picking up a bunch of our castoffs coming out of TC. We might see some trades for guys he wants though.

I think DJ is one guy who winds up leaving somehow.

If Cutler doesn't gel with the new coach and has a below average '09, or even just average, I think Shanahan gives him a call.

And does what? Cutler still has three years on the contract and we would just franchise him if he didn't want to work on a deal. The odds of not working on a deal are pretty damn low at that. Franchise QB's don't leave a team unless the team lets them walk. It just never happens.

Yes they have. But the QB? I can't recall one legitimate franchise QB who has ever done such a thing. I don't include just drafted rookies. I mean established quarterbacks.

I know that, steps ... I mean, wherever Mike goes - if he does NOT hire Slo as DC, what does that make him? After all, he lost his job standing up for Slo's job, so isn't he logically obligated to bring him along to the Jets or Browns or wherever?

I must have missed the post where Shanny actully accepted another coaching job. Amazing how many useless threads have been started today.

Well we know Cutler isn't a happy camper right now...I think Champ might leave this organization by demanding a trade if he doesn't like where this is going. I'm on the fence right now...just have to wait and see here.

The guys on offense will come around. All they have to do is score points and they'll all be happy. They'll all be a lot happier when they don't have Bob Slowik leading the defense next year too. Watching that defense every week had to be more demoralizing than anything else. I can understand if they are worried the offense will suffer. It's not like the defense is anything inspiring.

Where are these ideas coming from? Is there any consistent record of this happening when NFL teams bring in new coaches? Granted we weren't a 2-14 squad making an obvious firing, but I can't remember any significant examples of players forcing a trade during a coaching transition because they miss the old coach.

The players are smart. If the new staff proves it can win and the front office pays them fairly, they will want to stay. This isn't like firing a college coach where all the recruits can flee with him. If Cutler can form a bond with someone on the new staff (or if we keep some of the existing staff) and he doesn't have to spend half the game watching in disgust as the defense gets shredded on 3rd and long time after time...well I think he might stick around.

Now if this turns into the disaster some of you fear...well I'd be surprised if everyone left and reunited on Shanahan's new team either. They would follow the money.

snowspot66
12-31-2008, 12:51 AM
Players rarely change teams unless they chase the money. Teams often can't afford to pay certain players but that's part of the business. Few players leave for reasons other than money.

Unless it's a dream location, hometown, or some sort of player/coach dysfunction then it's all about the money. As long as we pay them they'll stick around.

I'm in wait and see mode for right now as to who replaces Shanny and who the GM is and all that. I'm not saying a player like Champ Bailey is going to demand a trade to Shanny's team, I am saying if we don't win next year then he will likely force his way out. Champs is itching to play in the playoffs...someplace we haven't been for too long.

It will all depend on what the team does. We don't need to make the playoffs to keep the players happy. We need to show that the days of having to score 30-40 points every week just to have a CHANCE to win are over. If guys see the defense coming along any misgivings will fade fast.
