SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE?
Posted by Mike Florio on December 30, 2008, 7:51 p.m.
The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make.

According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money.

Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers.

Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.

“I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.”

So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be?

Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job.

What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach?

That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego.

YUCK.

In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one.

Last year i had this spooky dream of us firing Mike last year and in the dream Al Davis walks to a bank of mics and says he is stepping away from the media light and going to enjoy some time with his family and fixing the one mistake he ever made , and he would like to introduce to you the new coach and president of football operations mike Shanahan ...

Either way this move was Stupid .... you let him retool and get all this young talent to groom for a run at a title , and in a year where half the team misses weeks of football or is on IR you fire him .... We look as stupid as the Jets ...

jeez not sure what would be worse .... S.D. or Raiders ...

Why would you even say that? He isnt coming to SD because there is no job opening and he isnt going to get ANY control with AJ Smith around and Al Davis hates him.He isnt going to Oakland unless Al swallows his pride (which never happens) and offers a bundle, but Shanny already knows how meddling Al is and i doubt he would even consider it.

If the story is true Shanny will have much to answer for. He effed this team the last 3 weeks meanwhile cooking up a move to go to the Chargers. I will have to say the story is crap, but I hope its true, that will solidify him as the Rat that everybody else claimed he was. If its true, he will just consolidate power there on a downsliding charger team and ruin them too. And such actions always reap the fruits they deserve. Broncos will be the class of the division, again. And soon

You don't understand. When angered he is an unstoppable force! He will score 100 pts a game out of sheer will power!

Seriously though, I think people look at his track record against the Raiders. Well, folks, that has largely to do with the Raiders consistently sucking ass. Part of it might be that he put in a little extra work those weeks, but when the Raiders were good they beat us. When they were bad we beat them. There were a few exceptions on both sides, but that is generally what happened. If he goes to SD we'll just have to field a better team than SD. Pretty simple.

these rumors are so ridiculous.

first of all, Shanny was fired this afternoon. he's got a presser tomorrow.

that some idiot reporter is speculating about where Shanny ends up and that people are believing it as if it has some meat to it, means that since Sunday, when the Broncos were dismantled in Sandy Eggo, Shanny has been secretly shuttling cross country to interview and meet with NY Jets officials about their job opening which only came into existance yesterday.

come on guys, give this a rest. whoever is reporting this is an IDIOT. wait until there is actually something to report. but speculation does not equal rumor.

if it did, then run with this one.

rumors has it that Shanny wants to coach at Cherry Creek HS.

Contracts are written in many ways.

I have no idea if Shanahan's compensation ceases if he is fired for cause and finds employment elsewhere.
Now if you've seen and reviewed the contract and are saying that Shanahan would be paid his full salary, regardless of the cause of termination, then I'll bow to your knowledge.
As for my understanding how contractual bonuses 'work' I've been on both sides of that fence.
I know enough to be surprised if Bowlen's lawyers allowed him to guarantee a salary if Shanahan were employed and paid by another organization.
But their relationship transcends business and maybe Bowlen was giddy enough to pay Mike regardless. ???

Shanahan is due $20M over 3 years, he's going to get that money somehow. If he doesn't work, Bowlen pays. If he works and makes less, Bowlen pays the difference. If he works and makes more, Bowlen doesn't owe him another dime.

Shanny will end up in either Dallas, Indy, or Tampa. Tampa is just a hunch. Indy and Dallas make a lot of sense b/c they are the perfect scenarios for a coach that can put a good-great team over the top. Put him in a situation like Dallas where the defense is already pretty good and he'll have success very quickly. He likes Romo a lot and likes TO and Roy Williams as well. I think Shanny would jump at that opportunity and I would like to see him do it to be honest. Almost guaranteed success for my favorite coach and it's outside the AFC!
