Dec 29th, 2008 | STOCKTON, Calif. -- Billionaire developer and San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos has announced in a letter that he suffers from dementia.

The 85-year-old Stockton resident was in the owner's box for the Chargers' division-clinching win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but family members wanted to tell the public that his infrequent appearances lately have been because of his declining health.

Spanos wrote in a letter published in the San Diego Union Tribune that his memory is fading, but that physically he feels strong.

Spanos was one of the largest contributors to the 2004 campaign of George W. Bush, who then appointed him to the Kennedy Center Board. Spanos bought an interest in the Chargers in 1980 and acquired the team outright in 1984.

So we have two AFCW division team owners who are losing their marbles plus the Chiefs and we still can't win the West? Pathetic.

But only one who thinks he still knows football.

And let me guess, you want him to give you all his money.

He has been out of the day to day operations of the Chargers for years now. His son Dean has been running the show since 1994.

You want make fun of an Owner do it to Al Davis, who by the way I ran into at our last meeting in San Diego. I told him that we need to keep him alive for a few more years, I then called him a crotchity old bastard, I then told him he is the best weapon we have!

Prayers for him and his family. Mental disease freaks me out. One thing I pray I dont run into when I get older.

This is irrelevant as far as football operations go. His son, Dean has been running the team for a while now.

But I always thought Spanos unfairly got a bad rep. You can fault him in the past for not hiring the right GMs and whatnot but he has always been willing to spend money despite what people said about him.

Hopefully, this gives the players a little more incentive to go win a championship for the big man.

Be nice...but realistically and historically no 8-8 team goes anywhere in the playoffs.

Oh, don't worry. I'm realistic about this team and my expectations are not too high for the post-season but they're in the dance now so anything can happen.

I think they have a good chance against the Colts because they match up so well with them and historically their games have gone right down to the wire every time. If they were to go to Pittsburgh or Tennessee after that, not so confident but despite their poor record this year, they've had a chance to win every game this year (outside of the Bills game).

You matched up well when you had a passrush. We'll see though.

This has been a history making year, NFL teams do not go 0 and 16, teams that are 4 and 8 are not supposed to make the playoffs.

You can throw away all the records now, everyone is equal.

Besides who says we can’t go all the way. We were in the Championship Game just last season. And no one gave us a chance then also. But we went through Indy, we went through Tennessee, and we were within an eyelash of going to the Super Bowl. Last year we were all banged up going into the playoffs, this year we are healthy

Yeah but Dean Spanos who is Alex's Son has been running the team for a while now. He is the one who hired Marty, ...and fired him too so he has been running the team for at least 6 years.

So does Dementia only affect Memory?

Or does it contribute to declining health as well?

Either way, I hope he lives the best life he can from here on out.

It'd be nice if the Bolts could get him a title before its too late.

The Chargers haven't had a pass rush all year long and their game went down to the wire a few weeks ago.
