Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall today revealed he played the entire season without much feeling in his right hand, which he injured in March while wrestling with family members at a Florida resort.
Marshall underwent preseason surgery to repair forearm lacerations to an artery, vein, nerve, two tendons and three muscles, the result of falling into a home entertainment center.
"The back of my hand is still numb," Marshall said while cleaning out his locker room at team headquarters. "I'm not going to say I'm making excuses for myself, but maybe I didn't recover as great as I wanted to from my hand injury ... I'm disappointed in myself."
"I didn't get it done this year," he said. "You look at the Pro Bowl, you look at the 100 catches. That wasn't good enough. I should have been a better leader, on and off the field.
"On the field, too many drops, way to many drops, and I just didn't make enough big plays. I expected a lot more out of myself. It's as simple as that."
Marshall said his forearm is fine but doctors told him he would need "a year or two" before he regains complete feeling in his hand.
"I don't know if that was the cause of it," he said. "There are so many different things, but I want to be good, and if I want to be a leader on this team, I can't have over 10 drops — 11 drops, 12 — it was probably like 15 or 16 this year. Ridiculous."
Of all the Broncos that spoke Monday, Marshall was the most critical.
"We didn't get it done this year. Simple as that," he said. "We have a lot of talent in this locker room, and a lot of great coaches. We have to do a better job of just playing together."
Meanwhile, quarterback Jay Cutler said he was scheduled to leave town Monday afternoon and begin vacation, and he wouldn't watch the NFL playoffs that begin this week.
"Time to move on," he said. "I'm definitely going to get out of here. I have a flight at 3 (p.m.)."
Cutler, who also was selected to compete in his first Pro Bowl, isn't sure he would train for the Feb. 8 game in Honolulu.
"I'll probably just wing it," he said.

He mentioned the numb hand in training camp. That Doc's said it was lucky it was the back of the hand not the front. But I like that he is accountable for himself.

It would appear that Dr. Broncostein was right and it will be a good year before he gets back.

I like BM, it's just that he needs to work a little harder and worry less about his profiling. He tends to vanish in big games. And the drops were a problem last year, too, before the hand issue.

Who cares?
The bigger news is that the defense played with no balls all year long.

Man Cutler seems pretty pissed. I don't blame him but I have to wonder if he's going to alienate himself amongst his teammates. This time last year they were making plans for Atlanta to gel a little... now he's just talking about getting away from his teammates. Makes you wonder, especially with the way he was calling guys out yesterday. I heard the sideline altercation with Stokely was pretty ugly after his drop on 4th down near the endzone, and we all got to see the verbal "WTF Eddie" on national TV when Eddie missed the high zinger. Maybe his teammates need him to get away and Mike Shanahan told him to beat it for a few weeks. That would not surprise me in the least!

Eh he went on vacation after the season last year. Then got it going again. Eddie Royal already said that he would do anything for Jay so a simple WTF Eddie won't damage the whole chemistry of the team.

Shanahan's a big proponent that you need to get a way for a while, Portis eluded to that in D.C. as it was something he missed about Denver. I think it's very important the Broncos do something to instill "hope" or "confidence" that they'll fix the problems next year considering Slo is coming back. That means a big signing/trade/something that these guys can hang their hat on as to why they'll be back next year. Otherwise, we're looking like becoming to the Chargers what the Ravens/Browns/Bengals are to the Steelers.

Why would this be a issue and Jay's similar "WTF Nate" on national TV in week 1 not be? ???
I for one like a little bit of fire from my QB when a receiver fails to do his job which is to catch passes.

It took me three years to recover from the nerve damage in my foot. I never believed Marshall could recoup in a couple months. This article certainly explains some things we were all speculating on.
Lepsis playing druged up in the past, our #1 wr playing with a gimp arm.....slowly but surely things are coming out. At some point maybe Shanny will come out and explain where his head has been all season. It hasn't been on the team like I've been trying to tell you all. He's got a lot of **** going on distracting him. Losing $30 Million will do that to a guy.
I have a lot of respect for what Shanny has done for this team but in my 30 years of following this team I've seen coaches come and go. It's the nature of the business and there is no reason to fear some change. We're stagnant. Haven't any of you gotten stagnant at a job only to excel with a new company? No doubt Shanny needs a change and could probably do great elsewhere. Same with some new blood here.
It cracks me up to hear some people say. "We only need a defense and a RB and we'll be fine!" Have you asked yourself why we don't have a good defense and why we burned thru a stack of RBs? Teams with deep talent plug guys in and ramble on. We don't have a defense to save our lives and there is a reason for that. Yes injuries devasted our RBs but we weren't even competitive down the stretch. We got beat down by some very average teams.
If Bowlen had any nuts he could probably land Cowher right now. The thing with Pat is he can't see thru the haze he's been living under since the 1998/99 superbowl party.

Good to see somebody (other than Shanahan) showing some accountability and leadership. I wouldn't have expected it from him.
If there is any good that could come from last night, we'll get to see how much fight there is in this team. They should have an amazing offseason with this much motivation in front of them.

Not that any of the turds who questioned him would ever show up to admit they were turds, but he called this.

Because Marshall ruined his hand and probably will never get that feeling back. IMO this devalues what we should be willing to give him. He really isn't all that great a WR he's just really physical and strong. IMO he isn't worth what players like Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson are, he is 2nd tier to them and should be paid accordingly.

I'd love it. We'd gut that farce of a defense and bring in some ass-kickers. I also think he'd let Cutler know who ran the show, and I'll bet you'd see Jay grow up a little under a guy like Cower.
Just speculation, of course.

I like Doc, but IIRC he was claiming that Marshall would miss a significant amount of time with that injury. That injury may have caused Marshall some issues but not nearly to the extent Doc believed.

I can't believe that more Broncos fans aren't concerned about our #1 WR having a numb hand. Everyone is screaming defense yet we just found out we have a handicapped WR of the future. Nerve damage does not fix itself over night if at all.

This isn't a new story, it was reported about a month ago in RMN. Guess people weren't paying attention:

"The back of my hand and the side of my wrist is still numb," he noted, adding it sometimes feels "weird" when he catches the ball. "The doctor said it's going to take a year or two for that. So I'm thankful to be able to catch a football.""<!-- / message -->

The doctors are saying 1-2 years for full recovery. We'll be at 1 year sometime this offseason.

I don't think he's ready to get back into coaching just yet. He just turned down the Browns. Cowher is sure on the top of my list if we ever decided to move on from Shanahan.
