Chiefs realize West could have been won
By KENT BABB
The Kansas City Star
Damion McIntosh will be paying attention Sunday night. That’s when two teams he thinks the Chiefs should have — and, more important, could have — beaten will play for the AFC West title.
He’ll be rooting for Denver over San Diego. McIntosh said he doesn’t like the Chargers’ style.
“It’s cockiness,” said McIntosh, the Chiefs’ right tackle. “Like they deserve to be there.”
Whether San Diego deserves the division title or not, it will have a chance the Chiefs might have been a few victories, and maybe a few players, from contending for. If the Chargers beat the Broncos on Sunday night, they’ll win the division with an 8-8 record.
The Chiefs, 2-13, enter this weekend with five fewer victories than San Diego, but seven of Kansas City’s 13 losses have been by seven points or less. And at the end of a season in which the AFC West is stumbling through its most winnable year ever, that leaves a particularly bitter taste in the Chiefs locker room.
“If we could have won just six of those games,” veteran cornerback Patrick Surtain said. “Yeah, you think that way, especially when you see a team that’s 8-8 going to win our division. I don’t think any amount of veterans would have helped us; we’ve just been snake-bit for some reason. It’s been that kind of year. It kind of hurts.”
What hurt the Chiefs most was their head-to-head contests against those teams atop the division. Kansas City beat the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium in week four. But three weeks ago, the Chiefs blew a halftime lead to Denver a week before blowing another halftime lead to San Diego, the Chiefs’ second one-point loss to the Chargers this season.
Those kinds of games left players in bad moods for many reasons. Now that it’s clear a few more victories might have included the Chiefs in the division-title conversation, some players don’t even want to talk about it.
“That’s wishing,” backup defensive tackle Ron Edwards said. “I don’t wish. I don’t hope. Hope is for next year.” I agree
The Chiefs have been playing for next year almost as soon as this year began. They underwent a massive rebuilding movement that coach Herm Edwards estimated this week is nearly complete. He said another offseason that includes signing the right free agents and being smart on NFL draft weekend might put the Chiefs in next year’s playoff chase, a year earlier than Edwards predicted before this season.
Edwards lobbied last offseason for the Chiefs to abstain from signing major free agents, instead preferring to shift playing time to the team’s many youngsters. Edwards has said the Chiefs will be better for it in the long run. Then again, that was before a team with a losing record was one win from winning its division.
Edwards said this week he will not be haunted by speculation that the Chiefs could have contended with a few more experienced players and some better luck. He said he would have liked to win more games this season, but that’s all but over now.
One of Kansas City’s few veterans, left guard Brian Waters, said the parity in the AFC West is a good sign for next year’s Chiefs. He said after the Denver loss that he thought Kansas City was as good as any of its division opponents.
He was asked about that statement this week, and Waters said he still thinks the Chiefs weren’t far this season from being competitive.
“We’re not as bad as our record may look,” he said. “You look at the way we played against Denver, you look at the way we played against San Diego, and you tell me that we’re that much worse than either one of those two. I mean, seriously.
“One or two players, one or two plays — where they come from, where those plays come from, that’s essentially what this football team has got to learn.”
Maybe it was San Diego’s preseason pick as a Super Bowl favorite that stuck in McIntosh’s mind. Maybe it was that, even when the Chargers were all but eliminated from playoff discussions, they kept coming back.
Maybe McIntosh isn’t over the fact that the Chargers twice beat the Chiefs this season, the last time with quarterback Philip Rivers throwing a go-ahead touchdown pass and running up the field at Arrowhead with his hand raised.
Or maybe it’s that the Chiefs just couldn’t win when they most needed to, and now they’ll be watching a pair of mediocre teams playing Sunday night for a division title the Chiefs were never close to.
“It’s boiled down to this now,” McIntosh said. “It really doesn’t matter because they’re both our foes. It’s wide open. We could’ve had that opportunity if we were able to pull out some of those games. But it leaves a bright spot for next year. We can win this division. We’re getting there.”

Nobody likes the Chargers, which is why the newer Bronco fans will most likely have the Chargers as their number 1 hated team, because the whole NFL hates them. The Chiefs and Raiders have just been laughable in the last ten years.

Ya have to admit the Chargers would be a lot more lovable to the NFL if they would just lose 10 games a season. That is where the rest of the NFL thinks they belong. Because they've never won a SuperBowl, they are like the one step-child in a family of six. Here is the Chargers reality: "Be seen and not heard. Though you're one of us, ...uh, you're not, really."
As a Charger fan, its good to be hated. Sucks to be the nice team everyone gets to kick around. ...like those lovable Chiefs...

I don't think it has anything to do with their winning record. Its not like they won 3 superbowls like NE. Pit, Ind, Phi have been equally or more successfull in the recent past but other than their traditional rivals, they are not hated by other teams.
IMO, Chargers taunt other teams and they don't like when other teams talk back. Its almost as if no one else is supposed to talk back. Everyone in NFL is talented but the win/loss record of teams depend on who has bigger collection of talent at this moment and injury luck. When players insult other players just because other guys are the wrong end at this moment, it rubs people the worng way like McIntosh said.

Fact is, I can't really disagree. Most Charger fans are pretty frustrated with their chatter too. It seems like the players are trying to talk their way to a Championship. Perhaps they do it because they're insecure and are trying to convince themselves? I don't know....
That said, it doesn't take away from the idea that the Chargers have always been expected to be lovable losers. We'd prefer that they shut up and win.

Thats what I love about this week because all you hear is them complaining about us.
Anybody care to go back and count how many hands to the face and late hit penalties SD should have had the previous four or five meetings?
Screw SD. We may not win this week but the door is closing. Look at LT. He's limping to the finish line this year, BARELY making 1000 yds rushing.
It's Jay vs. the Chargers (Rivers, LT, Gates, a good defense). It won't always be that way. I can't wait for that day.

Hey, it sounds like Denver. Except Denver has had more injuries and wasn't in the AFC Championship last season...
Oh, and they have a slightly better record.

Hurt LT or old LT? Hobbling Gates, yes. At that though he's still better than 95% of the TE's in this league.
You guys have as much or more talent as anybody in the league. I still think thats true without Merriman.
As for Jay, he threw up 350 and 4 TD's last game on you guys. JAY isn't the problem. It's our 8th string HB. It's our shoddy defense that played most of the season without Champ and DJ Williams, along with a lack of talent.
Like I said, I would love to win this game. The odds are against us. SD is the more talented team. Still, that doesn't take away from the future. Jay beat you guys last game almost by himself. In the future, he'll have some help. Enjoy your advantage now. It will not remain that way.... and should we beat you guys this weekend, SD's window just got shorter by a year. I expect next years team to be vastly improved in depth and talent. We should have a complete running game and while the defense won't be great, we should be able to add some players through the draft and FA which could make them respectable.
Next year the talent will be more even. That means its Cutler vs. Rivers in a equal fight.
Jay > Phillip, all things considered. He's just better.

Lets not get carried away here. Calling Bolt fans worse then Raider fans is not only a huge lie, it's almost sacrilegious around here. There is nothing worse in the NFL then a Raider fan. The only thing that comes close is Al Davis himself. Sure, there's not alot of love for Bolt fans but please don't EVEN try to put them in the same pot with Raider fans.
Anybody who has been a Bronco fan long enough knows the true 1 enemy is the Raiders. That is the one team there will be a timeless hate feud with.
It really does suck we have had the amount of injuries we had. Losing arguably your best overall player for almost the whole year really bites and then you add the number of major injures and IR body count and you have to realize alot of other teams wouldn't have even won 5 games.

There is absolutely no statistic that supports it. Mentally, there is no contest. Rivers handle's people better, has an obvious passion for the game and has never given up till the last whistle.
You guys think Jay is the only reason for your wins cause your defense sucks. Well, so does SD's and the statistics show you've had a more productive run offense. Rivers is the reason for the Chargers being where they are.

Yes...but have you had to go 8 deep at the RB spot? If Norv had to, he could ride Tomlinson for the win. We cant do that, Jay is the reason we have 8 wins, and a shot at the playoffs. If we had LT or Sproles, I seriously doubt this game would be more then a chance for the Broncos to rest starters and get playing time for our 2nd and third teams...

Mcintosh is saying the same thing in the article above. IIRC, there is an article somewhere in there where NE and Ten players also said the same thing.
However, don't start believing everything you read bro because they all are wrong. The fact of the matter is it was all started by the other team guys. Also even if chargers are taunting or insulting other teams players, what you have to realize is they never use cuss words. If you are wondering what the f&^$ that means - that makes everything right. Opponents are not supposed to talk back unless chargers use cuss words.

it isn't being a good team that makes the league hate the Chargers, because they suck this year and people still hate them. It is their smug smartass antics and **** talking that pisses people off. Every player on that team, especially the douche bag QB act as if the NFL is lucky to have them, and they have a false sense of entitlement for being apart of a franchise that has never won a meaningful game.
look at the Steelers, people don't hate the team even though every year they are a team that competes in the AFC, and that is because they have accomplishments and they don't showboat about mediocrity. They are a strong team that wins, but don;t act like dillwads about it.

how are you going to even try to say that. Jay is the reason we are 8-7 right now. he has no defense, on his 8th string RB who at the start of the season was selling phones. Without Jay our team is at the bottom of the league and competing for a draft pick in the top 5. Without Rivers the Chargers would simply lean on their running game and be the same as they are now. Volek could step in and replicate Rivers production.
Put Jay as SD's QB and he would have the division wrapped up already with at least 10 wins. Put Rivers in Denver as our QB, and Denver wins 3 games this year.

Living in SoCal I will say that Charger fans are definitely bandwagon types. Until they started playing well a couple of years ago their stadium was almost always 1/3 to 1/2 full of the opposing teams fans. Charger's fans would sit on their hands during the game and whine about their team, almost always leaving midway through the fourth quarter. During the '06 and '07 seasons their fans possessed an arrogance which was difficult to understand. This is the first year in seven I didn't purchase tickets to the Den-SD game. I'm still kind of relieved though because I'm not sure my lungs could handle the SMUG Charger fans once again.

How come the Bronco fans leave when the Chargers are handing the Broncos their butts?
I mean the stadium was empty by the end of the 3rd Quarter?
Bandwagon, does going to my first game in September of 1970 make me a bandwagon fan?
Does having Season Tickets since 1980 make me a bandwagon fan?
Bandwagon, ya need to come up with something else
Where you talking about last years bronco games?
See attendance 2007

See if you can find San Diego and Denver

Those are not bandwagon fans. leaving a game early because your team is getting killed isn't being a bandwagon fan. It is just being a fan that is disgusted by the play that day. The way to tell a franchise with bandwagon fans is to look at their attendance week to week, and year to year.
Broncos fans may leave a bad game early, but the following week, we are back watching the next game. We are fans of our team good and bad as is known through Denver home games always being sold out and the stadium packed in orange and blue.
SD fans, were noexistant for the most part until a couple years ago. You are fans of your team Good and only good, which was seen as soon as 3 years ago, when the stadium was either half empty or filled with jerseys of the team SD was playing that week.

and I bet you had one just like that but with a raider logo on it back in 2003 right? Cuz everyone already knows that current chargers fans = former raiders fans.

Let's face it, in the AFC West nobody likes anybody. The only thing agreed on is everyone despises the Raiders...http://scosoft.com/s/e/43ec41c7.gif

I don't care if a team or their fans crows about their success, I used to do it all the time.
Do you folks realize Denver has never won three consecutive AFC West titles? IF SD wins Sunday that will be three in a row for them. That's something to crow about.
Of course, Denver won 5 out of 8 AFC West titles (and 3 AFC Championships) from 1984-1991 with Dan Reeves as HC and Shanahan as QB coach/OC/Raiders HC 1988-89/OC again.

How many years now have we heard that the Chargers have the best talent in the league, they're going to the Super Bowl, etc.? And this isn't from fans, it's from all the media and football people.
What exactly have they done during that time? Nothing. They have underachieved every friggin' year, yet prance around as if they've actually accomplished something. That is why I think they are disliked. Actually, IMO 90% of it is their douchebag QB. (I wonder if Phillip is allowed to say douchebag)

It is because you cant beat us twice in a year and you know it. Its because the Chargers are headed up, and the Broncos are still looking for a team that will do something!
Last year we handed you your butts on Christmas Eve, this year it will be between Christmas and New Years; it must suck to be a Broncos fan this time of the year. And it sure makes for a very long off season.
Your record indicates otherwise. Your defense is allowing 4 more points a game while your O is scoring the same amount of points. You play in one of the worst divisions in football and should have had the division wrapped up a long time ago. Our expectations and the media's expectations of our respective teams are completely different. Your team was supposed to contend for a SB. Also, per KFFL in 2010 you will have Rivers, Chambers, Jackson, McNeil, Castillo, Olshansky and Merriman up for free agency. Did I mention an aging RB?

True but he's right, they're still headed up. We got rid of our bad DC and have been giving up less pts/game ever since.
Merriman will be back next year, and Gates will be 100% (hopefully, although he's looked healthy as of late).
So next year will be the year to win it all or we potentially start losing some pieces, and LT isn't getting any younger.

Our record indicates that we control our own destiny, and we are starting to play and gel as a team at the right time.
Your record indicates that you HAD a 3 game lead with 3 games remaining, and you failed to cash in on any one of those 3 games. This by the way will be a NFL record that I am sure you guys will be proud to boast about! We win, your out, we are headed up, and you are headed towards the “who we do we draft threads” once again.
But your right in one respect "We should of locked up the Division" a while ago, we had you beat, but we couldnt beat the refs!

Phew....Glad you cleared that up. So you do admit, that while your team is heading in the right direction this year (winners of 3 straight), they will most likely suck in the coming year? You know, since so many starters are heading for free agency, your star player is 30 at a position that rapidly declines at that age, and your head coach has a terrible track record. Did I also mention Merrimans (Without a doubt your best defensive player) injury history, perhaps brought on by steroid abuse. So, which team will you be rooting for in 2 years?

Also, I'd like to commend you defense on that forced fumble they caused. I mean, it was clearly caused by your D. By the way you Charger fans cry, piss, and moan about this call, you would have thought that this 2nd game of the year cost you the entire season. But seriously, thanks for clearing that up for me, and to think I thought the ball slipped out of Jays hand because of that astroglide he used on the Chargers.
