After the game when asked about his pathetic kickoffs landing at the 10.
" I have to learn how to drive the ball in cold weather "
so you mean to tell me that shannahan knew prater couldn't kick in the cold but still attempted a 54 yard field goal before half?

Well, Elam wouldn't have made it either and another roster spot would've been wasted on someone else kicking off to the 10 or worse.
The one thing I can't excuse Prater for was that one awful kickoff that the Bills took to near midfield...damn thing looked like a pouch punt or something. It would've been better to have just kicked to Parrish.

There is this little know thing you can do on fourth down when you you are in bad field position it's called 'punt the ball' and the coach gets to call for that play.
It really comes into play when it's cold and field goal range is shortened.

Kern is allergic to the cold, just like Prater. His kicks only travel 10 feet when the weather is below 45 degrees.

we were intentionally not kicking off deep because we have zero confidence in our coverage unit.

I've kicked a high school ball a few times in about 5 degree weather and it seriously is like kicking a wall. Anything beyond 50 being made in that type of temperature is impressive. But I think Shany should have seriously punted it. Shoulda coulda woulda.....Sack up Jay and co. and prove that you can put up points and just hope the D can hold them under 38 this time.

He squibbed a couple of them intentionally by design, but the high short one was due to the fact that he couldn't get the ball into the back of the endzone, Hence my 30 yard comment, and his I don't know how to kick in cold weather comment. If he could have kicked worth a **** in the cold, like he is paid to do, they would have let him blast it into the endzone, instead of Mickey Mousing around with squibs.

You realize that both the squib and the high/short were by design from the coaching staff right? Not Prater's inablity to kick deep. You forget that we was kicking them inside the 10 in the first half, which considering the conditions, was acceptable. Our coverage team just sucks. If you want to blame anyone, blame them.

Kick the ball off and trust that your coverage team can make a stop before midfield, since they were getting it there anyway with those stupid kicks.

Stop being a douche for the sake of being a douche. Of course, I realize the squibs were designed by the coaching staff, and of course I realize it was idiotic, but the whole reason for them was because our "big leg" kicker couldn't get distance on the ball because according to him he "doesn't know how to kick in the cold."

It could have made a difference. Prior to that, Buffalo wasnt clicking in their passing game and by attempting the FG, it allowed Buffalo the option to run the ball...at least far more than with the ball at the 20. In fact, we both should know from Jaurons time in Chicago that he's not the most aggressive coach, so its entirely possible he would have been far more conservative on the drive. In other words, rathere than risk an INT, theres a good chance that Buffalo runs the ball and then uses all the time on the play clock before the next snap...assuming they get the ball at the 20.

We're talking about semantics here. Our coverage unit has been rancid, but their decision was based in part because of that, and probably because Prater wasn't getting distance on the ball. The result was the moronic decision to give the Bills ridiculous field position with the squib kicks.
We root for the same team, and I've been a fan for 24 years. I know a thing or two about the game, and don't get the immediate hostility on your part. I don't have any problem with you, and yet your ****ting down my throat when essentially we agree that the special teams were/are horrible.

Well Jeez, I dont' know. Just off the top of my head, how about a run at a serious defensive player, like a Peppers or Haynesworth. Perhaps a decent FS in Atogwe to help shore up that position. Sure a change in scheme would also be welcome. As far as the draft is concerned, I think you take the best player available in a position of need. In the first you either take the best MLB available, (Laurinaitis, Maualuga, or Curry(I hear he can play inside and out) Safety (Taylor Mays), or RB (Wells or Moreno). Then in the second, depending on what you have taken in the first, you take a decent interior lineman. The point is, there are way too many bleeding va*in*s on this board who think this team is god awful. Inconsistent yes, god awful, no. At the begining of the season, you would have laughed at me if I told you that we would be playing for the division at the very last game of the year. The last few drafts have been promising and if that continues, we will have a legitimate shot next year, something we didn't have at the end of last season.

its really time Denver started taking the field position battle seriously. We probably outgained the bills by 200 or so yards and still lost the game. Seems we were always starting around our 20 while the bills got a free pass to midfield.
It wasn't because of our kicker. It was lack of confidence in our coverage unit. Get a clue.

I can't tell you why our ST suck. I never claimed they were any good. It takes desire and effort to suceed there, and I guess our guys just don't have the pride to excel on ST.

If Kern pins the Bills inside the 10, we make Buffalo go 90 yards. Instead, we gave them a short field with a decision to let a slumping kicker have a go at a 54 yarder in less than ideal conditions. Bad decision, plain and simple. There's something to be said for playing field position--Bill Parcells made a living off it.
As for Prater, it's simple. He either gets better or he goes to the CFL.

You have several posts marveling at how successful Shanahan was this season with the myriad of injuries to Champ, LB, and RB, and how great he was for finding ways to beat NY and ATL on the road.
So the Buffallo loss wipes that out, or it gave you a new bandwagon to hop on?
It's pretty obvious it's the latter. Grow a pair.

Yeah, i still say the tipping point of the broncos collapse for the bills game was the 1st and 20, QB sweep call that lost us 6 yards. That's a slow play that gets you 5 yards tops when it actually works. It made no sense to run it, completely killed the momentum of that drive. Horrible.

Wow, you are just too rational. The FG attempt was the absolute wrong call. Especially with a known ****ty D. You pin them deep, at worst on their 20. Hell, maybe inside the 10. Jeez, could've forced them to go way conservative and forced a 3 and out and gotten the ball back around midfield. It was the single call that cost the Broncos the game. Period. We allow them to score 7 right before half. Hell, there was an article in the post yesterday quoted the Bills and how fired up they were going into the locker room.
