View Full Version : Dre Bly, what was he doing?

On the first TD to Steve Smith today Dre Bly totally took himself out of the play, WTF was that all about. That had to be the dumbest and weakest play I have ever seen from a so called seasoned vet. Not only that but he kept waving at Barrett to move up to the LOS or shift or whatever, and he was still looking at Barrett when the ball was snapped. I saw this at least three different times today. He is the biggest waste of money on the team right now. Hell Champ did a better job of stopping the Panthers today than Bly did.
I'm rambling and I guess the gist of my post is why does Dre Bly piss me off so much?
Any suggestions?

I wasn't terribly impressed with Bly today. But, he's a vet and he knows what battles to pick, and which ones to let slide. Today he let alot slide...

Don't forget it is Steve Smith he was facing.
Bly did not look at all interested in playing against Smith today and got his ass handed to him. It hasn't been the first time. He usually packs it in vs. good talent. Not that it would have mattered though. If Bailey was healthy, Bly would have had to cover him anyway per Slowik's stupid ass defense.

Blys is alot like the Broncos one week hes the hero that stops the qb short of the endzone, the next week hes toast.

Seriously. How dare he get burnt by the #3 WR in yards and #1 in YPG! Shame on him...
You are kidding me... are you defending Bly's play this game or season??? Overpaid and under performing, Nothing new here.

I'm not saying he's earning what he's making, but this game was understandable. The problem is, REGARDLESS of the WR he faces, he gets burnt every week. THAT is a big, underachieving problem.

He was trying to slide someone over to help him because it's obviously retarded to man up Steve Smith that close to the end zone. When the other guy (don't know who it was) didn't hear Dre went up to him to tell him, the ball was hiked and it was a WR screen so the other reciever starts blocking and pushed our other guy into Dre. Just a bad call and some miscommunication.

What Steve Smith did to us makes me appreciate Champ so much more. I can't remember the last time that I was scared of what a WR was going to do to us.

I'm not sure if this applies to the play you're talking about, but I know there was a LOT of heavy zone, and especially cover 2. Smith even had a great catch right in the seam between Bly and Barrett and held onto the ball despite a beautiful hit from Barrett.

I can understand the frustration with the season thus far. However, Football is a team sport, and the entire Bronco team has played inconsistent for the entire season!
Even a last second come from behind win takes the entire team to execute to achieve the win. Has Bly had some bad games---w/o a doubt. Has Cutler made some boneheaded decisions and thrown costly interceptions---yep! Has the Broncos injury riddled RB's turned the ball over--yep!

CAR motioned into a play that would make the Defenders switch coverages on a crossing pattern. That would make Bly cover inside and Bell outside. Bell did not catch the switch until it was too late and Bly covered the inside of the play. It was a great play design against a rookie that was concentrating on the wrong thing because CAR was throwing down the seams on him.
Bly did look disinterested after Smith Caught the ball, but he was definitely playing inside coverage on the twin bunch combination at the POA. Bell got eaten up by a very solid blocker in Muhsin Muhammed and Bly was not able to get over and force the play back inside to help.

Overall, what I said was going to happen, happened again. DEN had to overload their run gaps and commit extra players to stop the run at the expense of giving up huge plays in the passing game.
As for Bly, he played poorly yesterday, but it was nowhere near without cause. Getting stuck on an island with Smith and having young DB's making a ton of mental mistakes will make any CB look bad. Bailey was nowhere near his talent level last year in performance, because he was stuck out there with more responsibility every play than any DB should have. The averages caught up with him playing such exposed coverage and teams attacked Bly way more than Champ.
All of this was brought up in the MHR thread a few days ago if you want to get into details, but Bly got his ass burned against CAR because the scheme hung him out to dry with players who made a bunch of mistakes around him. He still got beat, but its not like he had much of a chance with the way they played either.

Thanks. Had my kiddo over before she heads off to TX for Christmas, so only got to see a handful of plays here and there.

Not too many on defense look that great from week to week. But yeah, Bly just isn't that great.

When is the last time you have seen Bly be physical? I mean that is his biggest weakness. He is a pussy, he is alright in coverage, but against a physical reciever he has never stood a chance. If champ was healthy we would have stood a better chance defending him.

Not to leave a reciever 10 yards open, especially if his name is Steve Smith...or not to get taken out by a teammate because you're out of position at the SNAP.
Should I continue?

That's why most teams don't like to have CBS run around trying to guard a certain WR. Panthers ran steve smith outside, then inside the other wr, Bly got caught up behind the other CB.

He did jump that one route perfect but Jake picked up on in and tossed the ball over his head. Last game was far from his best game without Champ, but over all given what we have to work with right now I think he is playing better then when Champ is in the line up. As someone pointed out having a LB playing saftey wasn't a good coaching move against the Panthers.
He might be over paid money wise but we only gave up George Foster for him people
