I was not a fan of getting rid of Elam at all.

Elam's 27/29 (93.1%) looks pretty damn good right now.

Prater's 22/30 (73.3%) is one of the worst in the NFL.

He was good early in the season, but has hit a mental block. Kickers can be mentally fragile, and sometimes they never recover. He'll either close the season strong, or it's another thing to address in the off-season. Hopefully, it doesn't cost us a close game with Buffalo, Sandy Eggo, or in the playoffs.

That's great, 1 year difference. Tell me again, was he a full-time kicker in the NFL last year? Wait he wasn't, so even though he's not technically a rookie, he still is one. Just like Ryan Harris is pretty much a rookie since he rarely played last year.

BTW, Elam's 2nd year % was an awesome 81.1%.

Why was Prater not a full time kicker last year....because he missed a few FGs and Atlanta cut him.

I don't care what Jason Elam did in his 2nd year, I care about what Prater is doing right now.

One of these days, Prater will nail a record 70 yard FG to win a game for Denver. He will get a key to the city and he won't pay for a meal around town for awhile.

On the flip side of that, Prater is just as likely to shank a last second 20 yard field goal and become the most hated man in Colorado.

No, if they don't step on the field right away and dominate they should always be cut or hopefully traded for a late round pick because you can never have enough picks. Why should anyone be given any time to develop anymore? Especially when Klis has already said the organization is targeting 2010 as the year they'll be Super Bowl contenders.

We'll bring in someone in the offseason and Prater will have to kick for his job. If he can gain any consistency he'll be a good kicker for us for years to come. If not, no big loss. We'll probably snag a kicker in the 7th round.

But Little, who's about to turn 34, runs counter to the Broncos' overall plan. You're right about this year: The Broncos can't go all the way with this defense. But because their overall roster is so young, the front office will remain mindful staying in position to make a serious Super Bowl run by 2010. I'd rather the Broncos continue to invest playing time in Moss and Tim Crowder than hinder their development by bringing in a veteran.

So I was a little off, by 2010 instead of targeting 2010.

youre really comparing jay cutler to matt prater?

prater is 4-10 from 40-49 yards. i gaurantee no other kicker in the NFL is taht bad, and he has one of the lowest kicking percentages in the league. the difference between cutler and prater is prater messes up over half of his chances. if cutler messed up half of his chances, or was one of teh worst in the league, we would want him cut.

Here is an interesting stat:

Prater in college: 50/74 in FGs....67.6% career college percentage.

Prater in the NFL: 23/34 in FGs....67.6% career NFL percentage.

67.6% might cut it in college, but in the NFL it does not.

Actually, Prater made some core fundamental changes to his kicking this last off-season ... he had his first kicking coach ever supposedly. One of the fundamentals they changed was to stop him watching the ball being snapped and focus his eyes on the placement spot only.

I dunno, I still have hope for Prater ... people don't talk about his kickoffs much around here, but they fly consistently inside the 5-yard line. And fortunately his FG misses have come in games we had no chance to win, hence they don't hurt as much. Last year Prater missed kicks and completely lost confidence, ending up getting cut, this year same story. It's not the numbers, though they're getting bad overall too, but the way misses get into his head that has made me, and I'm guessing the team too, lose confidence in Prater long term, he's just not tough enough mentally to get it done.

Us having major problem elsewhere, really has nothing to do with that.

And comparing his numbers to Elam's rookie season, gimme a break, by that logic, you could make strong arguments for Plummer being the best Denver QB ever

Missed a 43 yd FG at the end of the half against the Raiders that would have tighten the score to 10-6. Denver then came out and scored and would have taken the lead. That kick may have been the one to send Prater over the edge. He's a basket case from what ppl who frequent Dove Valley say
