View Full Version : Your take on Chad Jackson?

This week all the attention is on Cory Boyd and what he might do for the team. Chad Jackson seemed like an intriguing pick up, and now that we've seen him play a bit I wonder what the opinons on his performance are.

Any thoughts?

We should try him at cornerback when we move Champ to safety.

He's looked good the few times we've gotten the ball in his hands. I liked that widereceiver screen play against the Jets--he really showed good burst, but didn't do as much as I thought he might/could to evade defenders.

I've actually been very surprised with him in the run-blocking department. I haven't watched the games again and again to confirm this, but off of memory it seemed to me as though he was sticking his head in there to help our RBs get some downfield blocks.

I wouldn't mind him taking some of the KR duties to give Eddie a bit of a breather every now and then. Ideally, Chad Jackson will learn as much as possible from Stokely about playing the slot and running good routes. Probably won't happen as much to my satisfaction as I would like, but he could be a nice piece of the puzzle for us next year and beyond.

The fact the coaches kept him around over Martinez (who knows the system and can return punts/kicks) and have begun working him into the offense tells me they see something in him. At a minimum, he could provide the depth at WR that Hixon was supposed to had our F.O. not jumped the gun on releasing him.

His hair is really gay.

Wow, your second Homo-reference this week. Lol.

I like what I have seen so far on those 2 WR screen plays he has gotten. If he can continue to improve he will be a nice 4th or 5th option for the rest of this year.

Underachiever? I thought he might make the most of another chance. It seems like we've had a lot of players like this lately. Tons of potential, but not really living up to expectations. I was suprised to see him play as early as we did esp. since he wasn't very familiar with the offense. I thought there were other WR's ahead of him on the roster.

I'd like to see him get more action in games, se we can get a better read on the guy. I guess there's only one ball & with all the other talent we have, he's down on the food chain. I've liked what I've seen in him so far, I hope he brings some type of value to the team. Time will tell.

Jay Cutler really hasn't been looking his way. It's not like he's dropped balls...

Last week there was a play where he WIDE OPEN up the sideline as Jay Cuter was scrambling. He threw it to Marshall in some coverage, where as if he led Jackson it very well would have been a TD (no joke). Some of you might remember this play. It was a 3rd down too.

I think he needs more opportunities more than anything...

Try him out an KR, we've been lacking in that area the past couple weeks.

I think we are going to keep him. Shanahan will put any running back on the roster in the game, but when it comes to wide receivers it usually takes much longer for someone to get on the field than it took Jackson. Remember Terrell? We can at least probably say that Shanahan sees more in Jackson than he did in Terrell. Stokely is getting older and ever more nicked up, it's not bad to have insurance in the form of a hungry young talented player trying to hang on to his career. I like what I've seen so far from him, keep him unless he's a thug or something.

Agree. Can't coach speed, and Chad or somebody was talking about him becoming a slot guy.

Disagree... not lately. We used to have underachievers like that, but not any more. Tim Crowder maybe, but who else?

We are a roster of overachievers now imo. The last three draft classes especially.

That could be it ... Shanahan might see Chad as his chance to redeem the Hixon mistake.

I wonder if any other teams made a waiver claim on Chad Jackson ... were we the only team to claim him?

No, he actually drew interest [edit: drew interest from == had tryouts with] from the Raiders, Dolphins, and Bengals. The Faid picked Ms. Lelie over him...ouch!

Bengals were reportedly looking at him for KR, but it looks like he failed to impress.

Hopefully the coaches can make something of him yet.

From what I've heard he had the talent but didn't have the mental part of the game when he was drafted. Thought he was hot **** in a champagne glass but was more cold diarrhea in a dixie cup. The talent is there, hopefully failing so badly and then having teams like the Raiders say no thanks will put him in the right frame of mind. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of proper motivation and a dash of cold reality.

That has to be a humbling experience when the Raiders don't bite.

I was a big fan of him as most of you know back in the year we drafted Cutler. I like his speed and his ability to stretch the field. It's quite obvious he isn't going to be a top two or three guy here, but it'd be nice to get him out there on some sub-packages to stretch the field. Heck, I think he'd be effective in even some screen scenarios. He's a talented guy and has pretty good hands. As a fifth or sixth option, I don't see why not. Anything more, no.

SportinOne

Good athlete who's been playing more and more as the year goes on. I think I'd be a cool idea to use him like Florida uses Percy Harvin. Let him run the ball, give him screens, reverses etc.

I think if Stokely went down you would see Royal go to the slot and have Jackson running the deep routes on the outside.

I was wondering when somebody would ask about him.

Chad Jackson posted nasty combine numbers (4.32/forty and a 38" vertical) and big time numbers at Florida. He's a big physical receiver who can go over the middle and I really want to see what he has next year once he's been through a training camp. This kid was judged by scouts at the combine to have the best hands in the draft. I think something happened to him but I'm not sure what it was, maybe just a confidence issue. The fact that he's seen the field so far tells me something positive. Coming in here not knowing the system and sticking on the roster is about all we can ask at this point.

Check out the hands:

I think releasing Hixon was all Shanahan and not the front office.

Shanahan and the rest of ST thought Hixon was being tentative and wasn't helping the team after the Buffalo incident. They thought that they could slip him through waivers and sign him to the practice squad to allow him to regain his confidence. They took calculated risk and it didn't work out.

snowspot66
12-14-2008, 05:17 AM
And really what has Hixon done to deserve this revisionist history lesson?

The guy became a good return man I guess. If he had done that with us do we have Eddie? Probably not. Hixon certainly will never be the receiver Eddie is. He proved that with the wide open drop last week. Hixon is better than we thought he was but lets not go proclaiming him great or anything.

footstepsfrom#27

Jackson is a prototypical NFL receiver in terms of his raw talent. If you drew it up on a blackboard he's what you'd see. IF this guy has figured it out and he's properly motivated we could have an unbelievable receiving corp next year. Imagine 3 receiver sets on 3rd and long with Eddie running in the slot against the other teams nickel back. There would be no double teams on this field with a lineup that included him in that package if he lives up to his potential. I'm jazzed about these young guys. Keep in mind something if you're already cynical about him contributing just because he hasn't come of age yet. The current talent judges are who brought him in here also nailed it with Woodyard, Larsen, Hillis and probably Josh Barrett...so the possibility of Jackson succeeding here looks pretty intriguing I think.

Drek
12-14-2008, 07:54 AM
I'm very happy that we picked up Jackson.

He might not ever be a #1 or #2 WR, but he's a very gifted athlete and his WR fundamentals (primarily run blocking and route running) are a lot better than I expected them to be.

He'd be a great fit in our offense as the 3rd WR compliment to Marshall and Royal when Stokley hangs 'em up. I'd prefer to see him in the slot instead of Royal because despite being of rather small stature Royal has a real feel for the sidelines. How many of his touchdowns have come from slipped tackles followed by a sprint down the sideline? He's displayed great field awareness that we can really exploit out on the wing, putting him on an island with a corner, no need to screw with that.
