Boyd making case for NFL playing time
/
Cory Boyd
Former Gamecock Cory Boyd still doesn't know how much he'll play this weekend for the Denver Broncos, but he does know what number he'll wear.
Boyd, a rookie out of South Carolina, has chosen to don No. 30, just like former Broncos great Terrell Davis.
"Thirty is an honor to wear," Boyd said. "I'm not saying I'm the next Terrell Davis, but I'll try to follow in his footsteps the best way possible. I'm going to wear his number in pride."
The Broncos have gone through a bevy of backs this season, with rookie Peyton Hillis becoming the latest to get hurt, tearing his right hamstring against Kansas City.
That leaves three healthy backs — Tatum Bell, P.J. Pope and Cory Boyd, who was promoted from the practice squad Tuesday. Previously injured Selvin Young also is in the mix.
None of them knows who will be starting Sunday at Carolina.
"We're all in there competing. It makes you work harder in practice," Bell said. "Whoever the guy is, the rest of the guys will be over there supporting him."
The Denver Post reported that Boyd got much of the action in practice Wednesday but mostly stood and watched the others Thursday.

South Carolina is a much bigger college town then pro town. Do you think Shanny is taking some steam away from the Panthers if he starts home state hero Cory Boyd?
Coming home Boyd is going to be really fired up for this game and if he rips off a few big gains there will be plenty of fans cheering in the stands for him, if not the Broncos.

John Clayton's take.
4. Denver Broncos at Carolina Panthers: Where's Terrell Davis when you need him? Mike Shanahan has gone through six running backs this season, including five who have gone on the injured reserve list. Things were so bad he brought back Tatum Bell, a former Broncos draft choice with explosive speed but a tendency to make mistakes. Shanahan will use Bell, but it's apparent he doesn't have much confidence in him. Cory Boyd, signed off the practice squad, is expected to start.
With the exception of the Broncos, the NFC South has dominated the AFC West this season. Denver is 3-0 against the NFC South, while the other AFC West teams are 0-11 against the NASCAR division. The Broncos aren't fighting for the NFC South division title, but if they win this game, they will clinch the AFC West.

I wouldn't say College football is bigger round these parts than pro. It's not like Jacksonville, where I used to live. College basketball, maybe, but the Panthers are pretty big around here.
Game cock fans probable make up about 1/5th of the Charlotte area, with UNC and NC State splitting the rest.

He certainly seemed to be loved by the fans down there. I'm sure it will be a little more comfortable for him and give him a little extra motivation.
There will likely be more cheers for the Broncos if Boyd is on the field than if he weren't.

Tinker will probably be in there for the first snap and series to let Boyd and Pope get the nerves settled a bit, but I doubt he'll get the majority of the work.
It was such a painful reminder last week watching Tatum go for 1 yard on every first down carry.
At least in Boyd, there's hope.

He clocked a 4.51 at the combine on the first attempt...I'm not sure what he finished with but somewhere I saw a 4.46 posted on him. That's faster than Davis. I like the spin move...

All good points, but his "slashing" style seems to find the crease and fight for extra yards. I hope he just has the sense to go down when three guys have him wrapped up, we don't need another Torain type injury, where the last guy pushing the pile back destroys his knee.
Cory doesn't need to dominate, just get enough respect to keep the Safeties in close. That will open up the passing game.

I have been at Carolina for 4 years and he is the best running back we've had in a long time. Has the heart of a lion, grew up in a rough neighborhood in New Jersey. Everyone looked past him and he was the fan favorite here for quite some time. Has a knack for making BIG plays when u need them most, and he catches passes out of the back field phenomenally. Wish the chiefs would have picked him up. Don't be surprised if he starts ripping all over the place. You have one hell of a RB on your roster. Like I said our offense has missed him desperately.

We're definitely going to see the RBBC approach to start on Sunday, and then whoever seems to get things going will keep getting the ball.
Boyd has only been with the team for a few weeks, and probably only has a rudimentary grasp of the playbook. He's also probably not in great playing shape, so I would doubt he'll be getting 25+ carries.
I do hope we get a good look at what he brings to the table though. I'm pulling for him.

Heart, desire and ball security > pure speed.
I heard 4.47 at the combine. That is manageable.
Comments by 'cock fans are interesting. He won a ton of hearts down there with his work effort.
He plays like that for Denver...he will win a ton more.

Thats because he is slow.
His biggest knock on him is his speed.
But then, that was Jerry Rice's knock too, and Terrell Davis, and a host of other players.
Elusiveness and vision can make up for speed. Im kind of excited to see what the kid has got.

40 speed doesn't really matter. How quick does the RB hit the hole. That is what speed is important. Accelleration is much more important than 40 speed.
T.D., Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton did not have good 40 speed.

His scouting reports said he hits the hole hard. Its his open field speed, he's not going to outrun a lot of people but he can juke them out of their shoes, get 4-10 more yards doing it that might be worth a lot in the big picture.

Good points. Not saying there's any comparisons here, but also keep in mind TD looked slow on tape as well at Georgia. What I like about Cory is his ability to make "On read"--"One cut" and its off to the races....and TD had that ability. Maybe Cory will prove he has game day speed. I can also see that Cory Boyed isn't as stout/muscled as TD was, especially in the thighs, calves and upper body. But hey at least Cory appears to have some zig and zag....which cool.

Exactly.
Tatum Bell ran a 4.3 40. But, he doesn't run with power. If there's not a big hole there, he's in trouble.
Backs like TD and Hillis can break through the first tackler and make something happen. That's absolutely essential for our system to work. There just can't be 4' gaping holes for backs to run through every time.
I actually thought Pope hit the hole pretty hard for a smaller guy. But, he must not be looking great in practice or something. Hopefully Boyd will become the next big story because remember... it's not like we're buying time for someone to return.... we have no one else. That is, unless you buy into the Selvin Young joke, which I think we're all a little tired of at this point.
