View Full Version : BPC's Top 12 1st Round Draft Prospects
The top 10 prospects i'm looking at right now for Denver in RD 1:
1. Will Moore - S - Mizzou - The top rated playmaker in the secondary vs. the run and pass. We would be lucky to add this guy to our unit.
2. Brandon Spikes - MLB - Florida - I think he's the best MLB in the nation. He is a combo of Malauga and Laurinaitis. Big play meets consistency.
3. Jeremy Maclin - WR - Mizzou - My favorite player to watch holding the ball. He has great NFL potential too. Imagine BMarsh working the hashes, Maclin stretching the field and Royal working underneath. Scary.
4. Everette Brown - DE/OLB - FSU - I've been intrigued with this guy for a long time. He a rare get off from the LOS that can't be taught. He's going to be a beast off the edge in the mold of Dwight Freeney. Until we find somebody who can rush the passer every game, he's high on my board despite having two young rush ends.
5. Aaron Curry - OLB - Wake - Do it all LB. He could play any three of our LB spots and thrive. He can blitz, he can run sideline to sideline, and he can cover. He's a playmaker. Probably the best overall LB in the draft.
6. Taylor Mays - S - USC - Hasn't hit the level of play Moore is at, but is a year behind. He reminds me of DJ Williams coming out of Miami, despite different positions. He's a genetic freak who is still learning and growing into his body. With good coaching, he could put it all together and become a monster roaming the secondary.
7. Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR- Maryland - Doesn't get a ton of love but the guy is blazing fast, a very good route runner, and has great hands. He's a big target, as well which could help Jay in the red zone. I think he will transition very well to the pro's, especially having a few other talented WR's to take pressure off of him.
8. Knowshon Moreno - HB - UGA - Tenacious runner who gets up field quickly. He has a great 10 yd burst but doesn't have home run speed which is kind of concerning. Duel threat on the field who can run and catch. What sets him apart from others is that he's a perfect 1 cut back who can make 1st defenders miss. He also has great runner instincts. He could thrive with Jay in this offense.
9. Beanie Wells - HB - Ohio State - I haven't been a HUGE fan of his but its amazing to watch him, at his size, run as fast as he does. One can only imagine what that would be like in this offense. Ideally, I would love to have a bigger back that can wear down defenses. IF Wells can stay healthy, he could have a J Lewis type career. He's a big boy with lots of speed.
10. James Laurinaitus - ILB - OSU - Solid productive LB. He is a heady player, who will play hard every down. I love that about him. Doesn't wow you on film with the hardest hits, just very good at fullfilling his assignments.
11. Rey Maulauga - ILB - USC - We all know what this guy is about. I'm still leery about his lack of discipline in his base defense though. He free lances too much, too much Levar Arrington for my tastes.
12. Mack - C - Cal - He's the next Olin Kruetz, only bigger. I love this guy. Watch him on tape, you will too. He's a nasty bastard who works to finish every play and would dominate the middle of the LOS in our zone blocking scheme. He's the best center i've seen play in a long time.
13*. Jermaine Gresham - TE - OU - Highly talented, large target with great hands and a knack for getting open. Doesn't have the greatest speed but is very quick. He'll be dangerous inbetween 1-8 yds. Plays with a vets savy finding holes in zone coverages. He could be great in our offense. I think he's a definite sleeper in round 1 for Denver. It sounds crazy but with Scheffler coming up on his contract year, I wouldn't be surprised if Shanahan looks here early in the draft.
Based on your own description, Mack should be higher. If you have a player like that who is a "best to come around since..." type of player and then you have a RB with limited long speed, it would seem the Center is the better overall player.
It's also projected with our potential needs.
IMO, S being the most important, LB/HB being the 2nd and 3rd needs.
That being said, we can only draft one player off this list.
There are a few centers that I feel good about later on in the draft. Arkansas and Bama's centers are both very solid.

also we drafted Lichtensteiger for the reason of becoming our Center in the future.
i would prefer to see us go after Spikes in the 1st, Chung in the 2nd, trade a future 1st for another 2nd and get Shonn Greene, and in the rest of the draft grab another Safety we could develop, a deep threat WR, and depth on the offensive and defensive lines, particularly DT and OG maybe C

Watching the civil war last night, once again I'm still trying to see what the buzz about Chung is. He was invisible in the time I sent watching the game.

Thats pretty good overall and I'd think most on this board would have a fairly similar group. My main argument is with Brown and Mack. As you mentioned, we already have 2 young pass-rush specialists. What we really need is an every-down end. Brown, Doom, and Moss are just too similar in skill-sets to ignore our other needs.
As for Mack, I'd move him higher. C may not be our biggest need, but he could solidify that OL for a long time.

As much as i know we have to get a safety and MLB . We have to go with a rookie that can make the biggest impact. I think that would be a top tier runner. help keep the defense off the field. and evens out our Offense. RB as well can make the start immediatly.
Beanie wells is my favorite. although i think we need to spell his carries.
Moreno. love the way he runs.. we have had luck with georgia RB's and i dont see where it would end here
Meck. C is the qb of the line can call out blitzes and changes
i think if we could get a shipley or robiskie slot we will have our next young brandon stokely in the second or third.
Moore.
Spikes.
Mays
Laurnuitus. he is the player we need. has a few problems but being around the ball is not one of them
I've watched Brown and I think he is much better than Moss or Doom.
Also, I think it is important to look at the Giants. They drafted or picked up DE after DE even though they were already strong there. It helped them disrupt some of the very best passing offenses in this league and it allowed them a lot of versatility up front on nickel and dime downs rolling their best pass rushers into the game. Plus in a case where they lose a guy, or like this did this season, two guys (Strahan, Osi), they haven't skipped a beat. They continue to pressure the passer and they look like one of the best teams in the NFC again.
What this team needs more than anything is difference makers. That isn't more evident than on defense. We don't have any game changers outside of Champ and unfortunately, at the CB spot, an offense can totally neglect a WR that he's covering and make his ability irrelevant.
Brown has one of the quickest first steps i've seen in a long time. He's Dwight Freeney quick.

Yeah, the Giants won with a great pass rush. We won SBs with a great offense that featured a dominant running game, however. There is no one way to win SBs. I know that is perhaps not your contention but, rather, to make a case for drafting Brown. But with that in mind, the Giants actually have a credible defensive coordinator. As long as we have Slowik, talents always going to be wasted. Even if Slowik is demoted/fired, Id rather not overdraft defense because we spent a year and a half with a crap DC.
Our pass defense is one of the worst in the league. How do you make it better?
Rush the passer.

Everette Brown, enough said.
I want a HB out of this draft and some impact defensive players.
If we could sign a guy like Bigby in FA, I could wait on a safety in this draft.
I love Shonn Greene in round 2.
Everette Brown and Shonn Greene in rounds 1 and 2 significantly upgrade two major phases to our offense and defense.

i watched the florida state game i didnt see everette out there. maybe becasue iw aqs snoozeing .. he is quick but is he a liablity agaisnt the run?
You must have been snoozing. He's hard to miss.
Brown's a penetrator. He'll have the normal issues a lighter DE will have but he's going to make a lot of plays in the backfield as well as his video shows.

I starting to really like your Mock draft of William Moore in the first ,Shon Green in the second , and Terrance Tayler in the 3 round, I also like the Gilbert pick . Gilbert maybe could play LDe for the Broncos then more inside on passing downs. Maybe the Broncos could develope Gilbert into a Pryce like player. I think Broncos will have to use a 5 or 4 rounder on Gilbert in order to get him.

Will Moore is everything we need. He covers, he hits, he supports the run, he is everywhere on the field.
We need so much help at safety it is not even funny, so many times our safeties are running the wrong way or not showing up on time. Will Moore would change that in a heartbeat.

Great comparison, that is exactly who he reminds me of. I think he'll be a Peterson type of DT/DE for us. He's had a great season at San Jose State.
If we could find a way to land Atari Bigby in FA to play the SS, Moore could play the FS spot. Instantly the defensive backfield is much better and I guarantee this defense gets a nastiness moving forward from this season. Run defense will be much improved with a couple of heat seeking missiles blowing up HB's and TE's.

IMO, Of all the rbs i have seen this year, Moreno will have the best pro career. He may not have Reggie bush speed in open field but he has great short area elusiveness and great instincts. He is 'Anti Tatum' as in he is rarely tackled by the first guy. Unlike most other backs he does not play in a option style offense - Georgia has pro style offense based on play action.
Denver has good ypc this year but most of those runs came from spread looks. Broncos have rarely used running to close out games this year - we were still throwing yesterday up by 13 instead of trying to kill the clock. Peyton will be good as a the power complement(10-15 touches) but it too risky to hope that Torrain or Selvin or Hall to stay healthy for 16 games.
Currently there is too much pressure pon cutler to make great plays all the time but adding Moreno will change that. Adding Moreno to Broncos will be like adding cutler to Min offense. Defenses can't gang up to stop one phase. They have to respect play action and Denvers offense will look like 2005/2006 colts. Everytime denver has the ball, they can go for 5 minute drive and score. I would take Moreno in first round if he is there, make a run at Tony G in the offseason, aggressively pursue Albert Haynesworth and spend all the other 8 picks on defense.

That funny because I see Moreno as the most likely to struggle in the pros, with his style and size. He able to make those plays in college but might struggle when the LB and S are as fast and agile as he is.

Good point about his size. I don't know how reliable he will be and its hard to predict these things anyway(unless its Ryan Torrain). There are lot players who are injury free in college but are always injured in pros and vice versa. At around 200 lbs he won't be 25-30 carry back. He would have to be coupled with a Hillis/Lendale White type of power player.
However, I did not see anything about his style that does not project well to pros. Most of his runs are from pro sets and not the option crap that mpost sec teams run. He has good vision, decisive and explodes through the hole. He may not be very quick in open field but he is very good at short area quickness and I have seen him elude sec defenders regularly. He is the type of player who will get you consistently 4/5 yards and break for a big one once in a while - a perfect fit for bronco offense.
On that note imagine if Culter can pass consistently from 2nd and short or 3rd short with either Marshall or Royal single covered.........

I think that he junks and jumps to much and that what going to get him killed. I have seen him about 6 times this season and I never been impressed. But that pretty much sum up my feeling on the whole RB class this year.

I can really only comment on two players...actually three that I have watched all year, every game, every play.
Lauranitis: Denver doesn't want him. He makes a ton of tackles, but the only problem is, he makes most of them 5-15 yards down field. What does that mean? It means he is getting blown off the ball or overrunning plays. He does make HUGE plays once or twice a game, but that won't happen as much in the NFL.
Chris Wells: His strengths: Well....everything. He is bigger and stronger than most backs in the NFL right now. He is sneaky fast and famous for outrunning just about every secondary OSU faced...including LSU's. His biggest weapon seems to be his stiff arm...just youtube it. His one drawback is his health. As a freshman, no injuries, as a Sophmore he played with a broken wrist and sprained ankle and ran for over 1,600 yards, as a junior he had a freak toe injury that kept him out of 3 games.
Really, the only injury that sidelined him was a freak inury. It's not like he has a bum knee or ankle that keeps flaring up. Plus, he's a really good kid.
Malcom Jenkins: An OSU cornerback who will most likely play safety in the NFL. This guy is a ball hawk and playmaker. He is a difference maker fo sho.
Lauranitis-No
Wells-HELL YEAH
Jenkins-HELL YEAH

We will see how he does in pros. My recollection of his play is different though(I have only seen him against Fl, Alb and GT this year). He seemed like a one cut guy always going north south. I tried to see if you tube has any highlights but only found this clip from last years game.
