MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. -- Florida State professor Sally Karioth bought two cards to give her prized pupil Saturday; one for good news and one for bad. Had Myron Rolle opened the bad-news card, it would have played the old Band-Aid jingle.
That card will remain stuck in its envelope. When Rolle, FSU's starting free safety, opened the good-news card, it blasted that Tag Team classic, "Whoomp, There It Is." And that probably marked the first and last time Tag Team will serenade a freshly minted Rhodes Scholar.
Rolle, a junior who earned his bachelor's degree in 2 1/2 years, now has the opportunity to join a club that includes former President Bill Clinton and former New York Knicks star and U.S. senator Bill Bradley. He was one of two Rhodes scholars selected from 13 candidates in District 7, which comprises Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. There are 32 Rhodes Scholars elected each year. Rolle is the first BCS conference starter to win a Rhodes Scholarship since Stanford tight end Cory Booker in 1992. Booker now is the mayor of Newark, N.J.
Rolle said he wasn't nervous for his interview early Saturday afternoon.
"It's almost like a game," he said. "You practice, practice, practice, and when the lights come on, you show what you're made of."
The scholarship will pay for two to three years of tuition, room and board at Oxford. Rolle has said he likely would study medical anthropology at Oxford.
After hearing the good news, Rolle hopped into an SUV, which took him to Birmingham International Airport. There, he boarded a jet bound for Baltimore. Upon landing, Rolle will travel to College Park, Md., where he will hopefully arrive in time to play the remainder of the Seminoles' game against Maryland.
How is that for a smart player? Any college buffs know if this kid is a talented safety as well? Pretty impressive young man to get his degree in under 3 yrs while playing division 1 football.

Hard choice for this guy now. He has an opportunity to possibly make it pro, I'll be REALLY impressed if he takes the scholarship.

Hmm tough choice. The National Football League or tea with the cake eaters. I think I would choose the NFL.

Take the money you can always go to school.

Take the money you can always go to school. The kid is going to make money...taking either route. If he can be a legitimate starter in the NFL...that would be tough to pass up! You can always pursue an academic career...Oxford isn't going anywhere. But if you have a chance to play in the NFL and pass it up...you will always wonder...what might have been.

Not on a Rhodes Scholarship, you can't.

Myron can pay his way through college with his NFL career.

A NFL career is not what it's all cracked up to be. Sure the money, limelight and glory are great, but all the players pay a price for it in the long-run. Who wants to have a nurse help you out of bed by the time you are 45?
Myron Rolle will make a six/seven figure income for the next 30-40 years if he accepts a Rhodes scholarship. It's a no brainer.

Id try to make the NFL at least. If Rolle can be a first round pick, then it would be smart to take the easy guaranteed cash and then go to school at a later date if NFL doesnt pan out.
Either way he cant lose I think.

Coming from someone who has played in the NFL? LOL
I have to think the scholarship takes priority...the nfl is great but its not the only way to make money, and aging painfree is always a positive

Exactly, why would he go through all that work to just forget about it and maybe play in the NFL, do what you want, and not what everyone thinks you should do.

Myron Rolle is my favorite college player (can you tell) and he is an absolutely awesome guy. I'm proud of him. He's a top notch guy in the community, a leader on the field and a great guy to have in a locker room. (Not that I'd know from personal experience, but from what people on FSU Forums and what a lot of press clippings, etc. state.) He's also a fantastic football player, and a legitimate prospect.
He should take the Rhodes scholarship. He is a bright young mind, and IIRC, he is aspiring to be a neurosurgeon. Good for him.
Medical anthropology is a great field to go into (biased because I am majoring in anthropology and have spent a lot of time in that area) -- and I wish him the absolute best.
Take this scholarship and run. Myron doesn't need football.

you are correct sir. -- "Rolle, an aspiring neurosurgeon, will now decide between the NFL and an all-expense paid scholarship for two or three years of study at Oxford University in England." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3719726

AND have the intelligence to manage that money and turn it into more than he would ever make in the NFL.
People see the limelight of the NFL but the reality is most of those guys are far from rich after their NFL career is over and MOST of them aren't anywhere near prepared for the real world post NFL.
Rhodes scholarships are more rare than the chance to go to the NFL, period. A degree from Oxford is more prestigious and worth more long term than the short money the NFL will offer. Myron isnt a superstar athlete, he MAY make it in the NFL but he is unlikely to make "millions".
However, if it is his dream to be in the NFL, you just dont pass that up. Most people's dreams die and they never fulfill them. When a person has a chance to fulfill a dream, take it, every time.
