Matthew Whoolery told KIKD News he found out about the chanting from his second and third graders, who had no idea what the word "assassinate" meant.
"They just hadn't heard anything like this before," Whoolery stated. "I think the thing that struck us was just like, 'Where did they get the word and why would they put that word and that person together?'"
Whoolery, a psychology professor at Brigham Young University in Rexburg, is not an Obama supporter, but he was shocked that any public official would be threatened in that way. "I don't think that the majority of people in Rexburg have extreme ideas like that, but we were just surprised that it would go that far," Whoolery told KIKD.
The Madison County School District has sent out an email saying that students are to be told this sort of behavior is unacceptable.
According to an article (http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/10/24/reddest_state/index.html) which appeared in Salon in 2006, "You've heard of Jesusland, but Rexburg, Idaho, is something more. It's not just a small town in rural Eastern Idaho. It's a small town in rural Eastern Idaho completely dominated by a fast-growing Mormon college, Brigham Young University-Idaho."
"Through this conservative convergence," the article continues, "Rexburg and surrounding Madison County may well be the rosiest place in all of red America. Need numbers to prove it? In the 2004 presidential election, 93 percent of Madison County's votes went to George W. Bush or minor-party conservative candidates -- arguably the reddest result of any county in the entire country."
The population of Madison County is not only heavily Republican but also 97.7% white. One of Rexburg's lone Democrats, a professor at the university, told Salon that "she remembers the time when a group of classmates followed her third-grader home, shouting out 'baby-killer' all along the way. She took it up with the teacher, who didn't seem to mind."

Wow. Somebody DEFINITELY needs to convey to those kids that chanting that phrase is unacceptable. I'm guessing they got that idea from their parents, who are ALSO in the wrong...

lol I wouldn't even type or say that word and Obama's in the same sentence. The big brother super computers have been reprogrammed for that, for sure.
You can't teach those kids if the parents are teaching them something else. Unfortunately bad parents can make bad kids rather easily.

The people that deserve the credit are all the hard working Americans and soldiers that made it happen. Presidents can lead us but in the end it's always us the carries the burden.
I'm not even worried we have a source of cheap labor, resources, hard working citizens, and a populace that seems ready to sacrifice for Obama to build us a bunch of infrastructure.
I'd like to see some projects that get people to work that the country needs. As long as Obama doesn't give it away to useless entitlement programs like welfare and instead builds bridges, high speed trains, makes the ports more advanced and secure, alternative energy etc etc. It's probably a good idea to have a President that wants to tax and spend on the country every once in awhile.
I'm just worried Obamas tax plan won't generate more revenue.

Hell Sam Walton himself would milk Cows by hand , then trade the extra milk for money or other goods , thats how bad it was , and Eisenhower , saw that the interstate network would connect the east coast and the west coast , making trade and transporting of goods alot easier ........

Outbreak of Race Crimes Across the Country
Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.
Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.
From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.
There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.
One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

I wouldnt advocate ever mentioning "assassinate" and a president (or president elect) in the same sentance.
I think that this is just indicative of the intolerant political environment of our age. From gay marriage advocate protesters raiding a church service to Keith Olbermann-esque hate speech that we see in places like this, to idiot kids chanting "assassinate"...the modern political discourse is one of extremes.

This morning, Glenn Beck told an anecdote about a recent trip to Wendy's where a trucker recognized his voice as he put his order in at the counter and proceeded to scream profanities at him. My first thought was "I wonder if that was that goob Spider from Orangemane?"

It needs to be taken serious. The racial hatred and ranting of assassinate Obama.....actually lays the ground-work toward greatly elevating the chance of some fringe groups to make attempts on Obama's life! or even more sinisterly sets the ground work for heads of states or powerful-wealthy fringe elements within our own country to make attempts on the life of any sitting President.....let alone on President Obama.
You must remember the racial hatred shown thus far in America's history is at a DNA-cellular levels of hate!!!!!
Fringe-Extremist conservative Republican behavior thus far has been shameful and reprehensible in their hatred toward Obama. Democrats have never treated Reagan, Bush I, or Bush II with such hatred to the point of cheer leading assassination, murder, and lynching a Republican President over the last 28 years. Where is the humanity amongst these extremist conservatives?????
The leaders of the Republican party starting with Bush, Cheney, and McCain need to go on national TV from now until January 20th, and state beyond compromise that this type of behavior will not be TOLERATED!!!
Would this stop the deep seated DNA cellular level of hatred in this country??? Probably not, but at least its a start in the right direction.

I think the vast majority of the country isn't racist. Most of the people I know are genuinely happy for African Americans, and what this past election represents for them. What I think is happening is that those that are racist see this as something of a last stand - so they're making a lot of noise. Fortunately, I think that generally speaking, racists in the US aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. Hopefully, that means that assassination attempts will be about as successful as the two skinhead imbeciles that were caught a few weeks ago.

Give me a break. Racist DNA!!!!! oh wow you are crazy. If you think because a few kids on a school bus chanted assassinate Obama that put him in any more danger then he already was you are crazy. Obama well be well protected of that I can assure you.
Bush would never come out and say what you want because it would lend credibility to a non existent problem. The country already knows that sort of thing is not tolerable. Bush will be gracious to Obama, treat him like a President, and will let the secret service handle the strategy for dealing with fringe elements.
If it really got bad then maybe but until then Bush will act like the country is safe, and the transition of power will be smooth. No reason to scare the world by having President go on TV and tell people it's wrong to want to kill the President MMMMMKAY.

Okay, I skipped some of the middle of the thread. I was still reeling from the news that Spider was into transvestite strippers. :)
I still think we're talking about a bunch of ignorant people. These are people who have spent their lives believing that black people are inherently less intelligent than white people. Now that one of these "lowlifes" is president, their whole world has been turned upside down. So, they speak out.
The other day, I sent my ten-year-old son to his room. He told me that he was going to break my computer when I wasn't looking - I guess it was the only thing he could come up with, on the spur of the moment. I wasn't too worried about it, to be honest. Eventually, he'll learn to articulate his frustration, and he'll be able to talk through problems. For now, he makes childish threats.
I see these dumbasses as doing something similar - typical bully mentality. They don't know how to use their minds to solve a problem, so they make threats. Fortunately, it would require some intelligence to execute a plan to kill a president. I don't think most of these morons have it in them.

So is this just a bunch of kids on busses too?
Potential threats against Barack Obama more than any past president-elect, officials say 11/16 (http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/president/34486914.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD 3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUsA)
Move along - nothing to see here, eh righties?
What's the point of threatening to kill the president? If you're someone truly interested in doing it, wouldn't you just do it?
The situations they mentioned in that article all reek of small-penis syndrome - some dumb redneck who is dealing with his inadequacy by pounding his chest.

You GOTTA KNOW YOUR HISTORY!!! The point that needs to be understood here is that Obama hasn't even taken the oath of office the threats on his life is even more magnified than what Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II ever combined prior to them taken the oath of office! This is why these threats need to be taken serious. The last time elected leaders or Presidents received threats on their lives to the levels we see on Obama now, was in the 60's......when JFK, RFK, and MLK were all gunned down by loan GUN MEN (if you believe the conclusion of the Gov't).

Reagan got shot he was lucky enough to survive.
We aren't saying to not take threats on our leaders seriously. I fully support the secret service looking into even the slightest of threats. If the govt says times are changing and we need more secret service, and maybe even need to be sneakier with Obama just in case, then so be it, get it done.
What I am disagreeing with is that the country is having some sort of racial meltdown, outbreak, whatever. I'm not disputing there may be elevated threat levels, I'm saying it's being sensationalized in these stories. Especially the one on the school bus.
Any American that doesn't want to see the best for their President is Un American IMO. That's just how I am. I'm not advocating we let any threats to Obama slide. Also I'm all for making poster boys out of any stupid whitey's making threats or trying something. Stick in a chair and light it up for all I care.
I'd rather see the article like this:
Increase in racial threats and crimes met with disdain by vast majority of Americans. Isolated incidents and an increased amount of threats to our President elect Barack Obama have upset all the races in America. The country is showing racists elements that we are united and will no longer tolerate violence because of race.
The Secret Service is vigorously investigating all reports etc etc etc.
The go on to do a story on those stupid whitey's that got arrested with the guns and the Obama plot. Make them look silly and stupid. Then put them away for 50 yrs.

UPDATED: Chilling Reports by Students: Classmates With Guns Talk of Shooting Obama -- And Racism in Wasilla, Alaska
By Greg Mitchell
Published: November 18, 2008 12:15 PM ET
NEW YORK Here at E&P, starting over a week ago, we have been chronicling local anti-Obama incidents, many far from the national spotlight, usually involving racist attacks of a verbal, physical or even criminal nature. We are following this largely from the Web pages of smaller daily or weekly newspapers.
A few days ago, the Associated Press and some other news outlets picked up on the disturbing. But at Editor & Publisher we are still receiving tips and personal accounts every day, often from small towns in both red and blue states.
Just this morning, for example, the Mount Desert Islander weekly in Maine reported that a third effigy of a black man had been found hanging from a tree in the area since the election. This was was in Somesville, following reports of others in Tremont and Bar Harbort. The paper observes: "State police also are investigating the incidents, which are believed to be in response to the election of Sen. Barack Obama as president."
Here is the latest note to us today from a student in Iowa (I have her name and address but won't release it here), a state Obama carried rather easily. It is much in line with reported incidents of other school kids, some as young as 7 or 8, talking about "assassinating" Obama. Of course, they couldn't carry that out themselves but what is chilling is that they are likely just repeating language or threats they hear at home.
Here is that email:
"I'm not sure who to email on this, but there have been several derogatory things said about Obama in our school, and one of them got a student suspended. I go to a school in a little town called Letts, Iowa. We are pretty down home, country road farm kids out here. But never, in my 11 years at the school, have I ever heard the conversation take such a negative turn.
"The remark that the student was suspended for was this, "Well, it's called the White House for a reason. We need to get that God damn N----- out of there."
"There were other remarks, mostly by students who hunt. They were discussing how far a shotgun could shoot, and decided that they could get to a high enough vantage-point to shoot Obama from at least 2 miles away, without anyone ever knowing where the shot came from. 'Another Kennedy' they were saying."
Last night a reader tipped us off to an incident in another Obama-friendly state, Michigan, in the town of Buchanan. Members of the South County Democratic Club woke up Saturday to find their building vandalized with swastikas and racist comments, spray painted on the side of the structure. These kind of incidents have been too common to list all of them.
And to show the true national, if scattered, character of this, I woke up this morning to find this editorial in my local paper, the Journal News, here in deep-blue New York State. The official is from the city of Ossining (the TV home of Don Draper of "Mad Men"):
"Anyone naive enough to believe that Barack Obama's landmark victory would mean an end to racial bigotry and stupidity need look no farther than Ossining for proof positive that we still have a ways to go. Americans made history by electing Obama the first black president; what they didn't do, by any stretch, is wipe away years of ingrained racial prejudice, insensitivity and, once again, stupidity.
"Thomas Reddy, assistant village fire chief, deserved a swift boot to the curb for circulating a 'knock-knock' joke that ends with a caricature of Obama and the words 'Eyes Yo New Prezident.' As a former police detective and top fire official - someone who many people want to respect and admire - Reddy is supposed to be a leader in racially diverse Ossining, not an embarrassment. He's supposed to set the bar for better conduct, not lower it. He let all of us down."
From AP today comes this from Milwaukee: "Some local firefighters unions are calling for the resignation of the state union president over a racist comment regarding President-elect Barack Obama.
"Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Local 311 president Joe Conway in Madison says Rick Gale admitted using a racial slur the day after Obama was elected as the first African-American president of the United States. The PFFW executive board adopted a motion calling for an apology, education and counseling at a special meeting Saturday in Fond du Lac called on the incident.
"Gale has agreed to issue a written apology to union members."
UPDATE: The weekly based in Wasilla, Alaska, which boosted hometowner Sarah Palin throughout the election campaign, provided column space this week to a local student who alleged anti-Obama racial comments the day after his election. Here's an excerpt from The Frontiersman op-ed by Waverli Raine.
*
Finally the campaign was over and I was actively supporting our new president, even though I knew I would be vastly out numbered at school. I expected complaints and qualms about the new president, but I was not prepared for the flat-out racist remarks said openly in the halls and classrooms. I was appalled. While I sat at my desk trying to do my work I could hear my fellow classmates:
“I think we should kill Obama,” one said.
“I hope someone comes up and shoots him in the head,” another would say.
“I hate Obama … he’s black.”
On went the racist words for the full 80 minutes of that class. Angered, I began to think of the injustice of it all and the ignorance of the students I was surrounded by. I wondered where they learned to be so hateful, and I wondered why the teacher never stepped in - why no adult, no student, including myself, had the guts to cut in and say it was not OK. Because it’s never OK for intolerance.

Yep.
It's scary to know that such ignorant, redneck pinheads who don't evolve still exist in America.
