Talk about audacity. Obama runs on the lie that he wants to clean up the special interests and inbred croney-ism in DC, and then appoints one of his entirely unqualified hand job providers to his senate seat. Granted, the governor does the appointment, but who are we kidding? This guy has Chicago political machine written all over his cabinet and his appointments. Somebody please tell me how this Jarrett woman has ANY business in the senate, based on her (lack of) qualifications? What a sham. Bush brought in half of Texas and everyone went ape. What gives?

Source: Obama wants Valerie Jarrett to replace him in Senate
Posted: 02:02 PM ET

From CNN Chief National Correspondent John King

Valerie Jarrett is one of Barack Obama's closest advisers.
(CNN) — A prominent Democratic source close to Barack Obama confirmed Sunday that Valerie Jarrett is Obama’s choice to replace him in the Senate.

Jarrett is a Chicago lawyer and one of Obama’s closest advisers. She is also one of the leaders of Obama’s transition team.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the incoming chief of staff, said Sunday that he had not seen the report from Chicago’s WLS-TV that named Jarrett as Obama’s top pick, but he praised her as a “valuable ally.”

“People should know that Valerie Jarrett is — and people do know — she is a very dear friend of the president-elect and a valuable ally of his, not only prior to running for president, in his Senate life, and just personally for Michelle and Barack,” Emanuel said on ABC’s “This Week.”

The Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich, will make the final decision on who will be Obama’s successor.

Interesting. She's Iranian
She's African American, born in Iran.

Jarrett was born to an African-American family in Shiraz, Iran, where her father, Dr. James Bowman, ran a hospital for children as part of a program that sent American doctors and agricultural experts to developing countries to help jump-start their health and farming efforts. At age 5, the family moved to London for one year, then returned to Chicago in 1963. Her father, who is of African American descent, is a pathologist and geneticist. He is currently Professor Emeritus in Pathology and Medicine, University of Chicago.[3][4] Her great-grandfather was the first African-American to graduate from M.I.T., her grandfather was Robert Taylor the first black man to head the Chicago Housing Authority, and her father, Dr. James Bowman, was the first black resident at St. Luke’s Hospital. Though Ms. Jarrett has never worked in Washington, her great-uncle is Democratic powerbroker Vernon Jordan. [5] Her mother, Barbara T. Bowman, is an African-American early childhood education expert and co-founder of the Erikson Institute for child development.[5][6]

She graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon, a New England boarding school, in 1974. She also received a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1978, and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981.

[edit] Career

[edit] Chicago politics
Jarrett got her start in Chicago politics in 1987 working for Mayor Harold Washington[7] as Deputy Corporation Counsel for Finance and Development.[8]

Jarrett continued to work in the mayor's office in the 1990s. She was Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor Richard Daley, during which time (1991) she hired Michelle Robinson, then engaged to Barack Obama, away from a private law firm. Jarrett served as Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development from 1992 through 1995, and was Chair of the Chicago Transit Board from 1995 to 2005.[8]

[edit] Business career
She is currently the CEO of The Habitat Company, a real estate development and management company, which she joined in 1995. She was a Member of the Board of Chicago Stock Exchange (2000-2007, as Chairman, 2004-2007).

She is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago Medical Center,[8] Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago and a Trustee of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.[9][10] Ms. Jarrett serves on the board of directors of USG Corporation, a Chicago based building materials corporation.

[edit] Advisor to Barack Obama
Jarrett is one of Senator Obama's longest serving advisors and "closest campaign aide[s] – an insider widely tipped for a top position in an Obama administration."[11][12]

“ Unlike Bert Lance, who arrived from Georgia with President [Jimmy] Carter and became his budget director, or Karen Hughes, who was President [George W.] Bush's communications manager, Ms. Jarrett isn't a confidante with a particular portfolio. What she does share with these counterparts is a fierce sense of loyalty and a refusal to publicly say anything that may reflect poorly on the candidate — or steal his thunder.— Belkin[11] ”

[edit] Personal life
Jarrett was married to William Robert Jarrett from 1983 to 1988. Their daughter, Laura, is a Harvard Law student.[5]

To the victor goes the spoils. Of course Obama is going to help his friends now that he is President. It's totally natural to reap these type of benefits when you support a guy, and then he wins. That's why these people support someone to begin with. You think people would help Obama get elected, or any man for that matter, if afterward the guy was just going to forget about you? Of couse no one would.

Just like Clintons, Bush's, Obama will help his friends. That's why who a guy buddies around with is so important. Hopefully Rev Wright and Ayers won't be getting any cabinet positions. :)

When I was in the Navy the Shah came to our ship to watch an airshow
we put on. Basically an advertisement to get him to buy some US warplanes.
He did end up buying a lot of F-14s instead of F-15s.

Two adjectives that best describe GB.

What exactly is your definition of racism. You will probably just put some joke up and not a real answer but who knows.

IMO to be racist you have to think your race or group is superior to the other. You have to be someone who commits acts that are directed at other races. It's not just a comment on a board that may or may not show you have prejudices or maybe don't fully understand where the other group is coming from.

You call me a racist but I see black people as really talented. Parts of the black culture are among my favorites and I would never do anything to to try and thwart a black mans happiness. I only feel superior to Raider fans of any color.

You should really save racists for the guy who says blacks just aren't smart enough to do anything but pick cotton. Or some white skinhead that goes out and beats the crap out of someone because they are gay, black, or whatever. If we water down racism to someone who says something you don't agree with then we lose something in the process. We lose the stigma the word has and the weight it carries. Save it for the real racists and give the it rest why don't ya?

I didn't argue that she is unqualified, but she is from Iran and born there. It's obvious a part you has a problem with the notion that see is from Iran.

Hyphenated-America is a racial segregation tool that's anti-country. We are one country. That's Obama's message and I agree with it. I think it would be awesome if you agree with it too. Especially since we all come from the same place...which...LOL is mesopotamia...aka a part of Iran. It's also good that we celebrate our diversity. It's not my point that we shouldn't, but not above our nation. Using hyphenated terms to describe someone is exactly that: Putting ones group above our interests as a nation.

Hyphenating yourself is also racist in nature. As if your race is so important that you must put it to the forefront. As if it's superior.

It's time to drop it and be a part of something better.

You mean like we put white people's interests above those of the nation for over 200 years? Please...don't even try to pretend that blacks are having their interests put ahead of the nations when it's been the other way around. Africans were brought here against their will. They had their culture stolen from them, their names changed, their religious beliefs denied, their family histories crushed and their families separated. Even after slavery was outlawed it took 100 years for them to even begin to be seen as having rights. In MY lifetime my own marriage would have been illegal up till about the time we landed on the moon. If black people want to be called AFRICAN Americans...they've damn well earned the right to have it that way.

It takes a lot of gaul to kidnap people and then tell them what they have to call themselves.

Not ahead of the nation. With the nation.

As far as rights:

You don't even know the right that they had after the civil war. Blacks held elected Senate and House postions from the 1870's until the 1900's when the Democrats regained power in the south. Further more Africans kidnapped Africans, amongst others, and sold them into slavery. But all of that is niether here nor there. No one alive did any of that. In short, get over it. It's a new day and the past is gone. Leave the hyphens for something else and look to the future.
