Well, power (Nancy Pelosi) won out over peace (Cindy Sheehan).

Yet, the violence and threats aimed at Cindy Sheehan surely tells us that Speaker Pelosi felt threatened.

Opposing Pelosi, Cindy Sheehan’s Office Attacked

Nancy Pelosi, Time To Go?

Pelosi, that fan of tables -impeachment off, war and more war on- is the Dem speaker (and right after Cheney in presidential succession) and her only serious challenger (in her whole career) is not a republican but Cindy Sheehan, Pelosi refuses a formal debate with Sheehan and then there are the odd happenings

From Ann Wright and Ray McGovern, working at campaign headquarters of Cindy Sheehan in San Francisco:

At 3:30 AM Oct. 30 (Thursday), just five days before the election, the large front window of the campaign headquarters of Cindy Sheehan was shattered with pieces of glass flying all over the office.

Steel grating prevented anyone from actually entering the office, but there was enough space for records and perhaps a computer with sensitive data to be taken. We are now taking inventory (8:30 Pacific Time).

Police responded about 8 AM and left a case number and a form to report missing items.

They evidenced no concern that political intimidation may have been part of the motivation, or–worse still–that this may be an operation by a resuscitated “Plumbers” group. (And we do not mean “Joe the plumber.” For younger readers, search on “plumbers AND break-ins AND Nixon”.)

Informal “exit polling” of voters emerging from long voting lines (took 45 minutes to cast a ballot) at San Francisco City Hall on afternoon of Oct. 29 suggested an unanticipated but very welcome surge for Sheehan.

Sheehan’s campaign manager makes some hay:

“It seems to have been a calculated intimidation tactic,” said Tiffany Burns, the Cindy for Congress campaign manager. “One of our computers was stolen, but no other property was taken from our offices and no surrounding buildings were targeted. Clearly they wanted to both frighten us and to gather information.” Total damage to the campaign office is currently estimated at more than $5,000.

The Cindy for Congress campaign recently chronicled a series of unusual events, including other threats of violence, in a statement issued on October 13th. In that statement, Cindy Sheehan noted “[t]he past few weeks have been a little strange at Cindy for Congress [...] the things that have been happening could just be coincidences, or a run of bad luck, but the climate for the possibility of campaign hanky-panky certainly exists.”

Campaign staffers also note each incident, including today’s early morning incident, has followed closely on the heels of a confrontation with Cindy Sheehan’s opponent Nancy Pelosi. This morning’s incident occurred after an on-air confrontation between the two candidates on KQED’s public affairs program Forum with Michael Krasny on Wednesday morning. “Each time we confront her, each time we ask her for a debate, each time we gain ground in the polls, something horrible happens,” said Burns. “Once or twice might be a coincidence, but such a consistent correlation is hard to ignore.”

Who knows? But Pelosi has led a charmed political life and has been instrumental in keeping Bush and Cheney unmolested by impeachment, she is symbolic of the struggle that will emerge after an Obama victory.

Cindy Sheehan has exemplified the need to challenge the political class where it has abdicated democratic representation, particularly in an empire where military action is part of its business of ceaseless predatory acquisition. There will always be another enemy to vanquish because there will always be a need for more resources from overseas, a greater sphere of influence. Once a nation becomes predisposed to war its trajectory is set. As that no good peacenik commie hippy Dwight D Eisenhower finally realised-

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. -Dwight D. Eisenhower.
