I didn't know William Jefferson was a convicted felon.

In any case, the idea of a shill for the Corrupt Old Party like you trying to go tit for tat with Democrats when it comes to criminality is hilarious! Hilarious!

The democrats elect shady people all the time, so it's no surprise here. They even re-elected idiot Murtha who said our troops were guilty before the evidence came out, which he was shown to be wrong by the way, and called half his state racist, so the dumbing down of America is well under way. Heck, just look at most of posts done by Obama supporters who have a hard time coming up with rational reasons to have voted for him other than, "duh, Bush is stupid."

It's just you and the rest of the barely-literate pinheads on right-wing fantasy island (the incredible shrinking GOP) against the world now.

Stevens is likely to be "asked" to leave, and Palin will probably appoint herself - or maybe her hubby? - and run in a new Senate race in 60 days.....

Wouldn't that be a kicker? Todd Palin a US Senator? He could sponsor legislataive movement to grant independance for Alaska!!!!!

I believe in order for him to be expelled, it requires a Senate investigation first and then 2/3 of the Senate's agreement. I believe one of the Democratic Senators from Hawaii noted that Stevens was likely to prevail on appeal, although we don't know one way or another. I suspect that they'll have to wait until his appeal is done. If he prevails on appeal, there's no way they can expel him. He's not going to "leave" on his own because he doesn't feel the conviction was proper.

We'll see what the appeal brings.

It seems to me that if a convicted felon is unable to vote then they should also be unable to hold public office for a period of time after their conviction.

Isn't the dude in his mid-80s? He'll be dead by the time his appeal is over anyway.

Based on the makeup of the new Senate, I'm thinking they just treat him like a coatrack: Leave him in the corner somewhere until he has the good sense to go away on his own. I have a distinct feeling that Alaska's premier position on the earmark gravy train has dissolved.

Not totally unexpected. Stevens was already locked in as the GOP candidate before this came down so he couldn't be replaced on the ticket for all intents and purposes. He'll probably now step down and the GOP can line up a legitimate replacement for a new election.

You don't have a clue of anything that you post. Like I told Breaker in another post, if you don't like the new direction of the country or the new President, in the enlightened words of the Republicans, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT! Preferrably the latter as your a buzz kill.

As sad as it is to say, it might be better for the country if Stevens remains in power so Bible Spice doesn't appoint herself to his seat and try to position herself for a WH bid in 2012.

I think she will get the Senate job, but I do NOT see a 2012 bid for Palin.

She is damaged goods. 12 percent would vote for her in 2012 in a GOP poll last night after the election was over.

It's over for Palin. You can't be part of a loser ticket and come back.

Not as VP anyway. Nixon did lose his first bid for POTUS and came back
to win 8 years later. I suppose there may have been some VP back
in the 1800s who did lose as VP and later become POTUS, but no
one in modern times.

How crazy is Alaska? They're like an American colony off in the distance, just a bunch of loons. Don't mind them. They don't matter. Let's just make fun of those weirdos and use them for their tax money and resources. We can stick their senator in the corner until he leaves. Just don't grant them independence.

Maybe we could sell Alaska back to the Russians to help pay off the national debt.

Actually, it's just the other way around: All those Republicans welfare queens up in Alaska get back $1.89 for every dollar they send to Washington.

So not only would we be making money by selling Alaska back to the
Russians, we would be saving money in the long run.

Sell it to the Japanese, Russians are broke-cept for oil exports,.

Besides, all the oil goes to Japan anyway.

Jefferson is not convicted.... yet. Only indicted.

Being elected a Rep, and being elected a Senator (when the whole state votes) are different anyway.

My fair city is filled with too many people who cling to the past. Jefferson has name recognition, so he didn't spend a dime, refused any appearances and debates, and still one. Race on this one definitely plays a factor. Me, I would vote for my red stapler before voting for this thief.

The thought process here is that until he is convicted, he is innocent. Respectible opponents saved their money for the eventual recall.

I think it would be great for Moosealini to appoint herself Senator and go for it in four years. Talk about comedy. What would the GOP caucus do with her for four years? It would be hilarious.

You might have a point there.

It would certainly be a gift from God for SNL, Comedy Central, Leno, Letterman, and comedy writers everywhere.

The folks who would reap the ratings windfalls would probably love to see it happen.
