It seems Joe the plumber has gone socialist. He is broke and taking handouts from friends and donors sending him checks. So much for the shiny new stage prop for the GOP.

Yeah but if you were to listen to his pathetic radio ads for McCain it paints a different story. He says, " Obama wants to tax me for my success...." Yet he isn't a plumber and is not even close to owning his own business.

There's nothing wrong with socialism when it's practiced privately. Well, actually, plenty of things go wrong, but that's none of my business. It's when it gets institutionalized into government that I have a problem with it.

Both socialism and capitalism, i.e., a blend of the two, have always been "institutionalized" into our government to varying degrees.
The right-wing propaganda machine does such a good job at red baiting that most younger Americans don't even realize it.

That's called a "mixed economy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_economy)" and it's not free market at all. It's socialism light. We haven't had a real free market in almost a century.

Inevitably, the government gets involved and bails out these businesses because they're too important to fail. The end result is corruption heaped upon corruption - which is the end result of all socialist economies, until they collapse - whereas in a true free market, corruption eventually washes out in time and the system renews itself without great upheaval.

humans are too greedy for a totally free market. A true free market has no regulations. A true free market has no middle class. Only filthy rich and filthy poor.

This is the result of market deregulation and unrestrained (or under-restrained) capitalism - not socialism.
Monopolies, the concentration and consolidation of wealth and power, and businesses that become "too big to fail" are the direct consequences of unregulated capitalism.
I've never understood why the "free market" apologists don't understand that the same checks and balances that (when applied as intended by the framers) make our government work are necessary to make markets work and to foster competition (upon which capitalism depends.)

Again, a citizen of the country gets attacked for not publicly backing Obama. Real nice what this country has become. And they say Bush took away people's rights, yet here we go. I guess ok as long as you support the "right" person. Sad.

You mean like the days of Big Steel, Standard Oil, and the host of other monopolies out there that practiced predatory methods to prevent any competition. That's what a true free market in the idealistic sense entails, it was quickly abandoned and for good reasons.

There needs to be checks. A free market is designed to work on competition. Unfortunately when businesses get big enough they can collude with each other to not compete or just buy the competition and then jack prices up. That's not what Locke had in mind, but its what can happen if there isn't a third party to make everyone play fair.
I still think I'd rather see a bit too much freedom than too much regulation. The only case where I don't feel this way is food. I like as many people checking my meat for tape worms as possible.
