Paymah ready to fill in for Champ
By Lindsay H. Jones

Say this for Karl Paymah: He's not going to back down from a challenge.
Not from the prospect of filling in for star cornerback Champ Bailey, and certainly not from a rookie challenging him to a footrace.
The latter happened during summer conditioning, when rookie running back Anthony Alridge insinuated that he was faster than Paymah, a high school track star who was clocked at 4.36 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in 2005.
Alridge ran a 4.36 at the combine last spring.
"He called me out, and obviously I had to teach him his lesson. I beat him," Paymah said. "There's a lot of fast guys on this team. I'm not going to say I'm the fastest. Just don't call me out."
But outsprinting a rookie is nothing like the quest
Paymah will face Sunday against Miami when he is expected to make his first start of the season in place of Bailey, an eight-time Pro Bowler who is out for at least three more weeks with a partially torn groin. Paymah started three games as the nickel corner in 2007.
"Just a chance to be in there, starting, with all the fellas, just flying around having fun, is something I haven't done this year," Paymah said.
"It's exciting, and that's what keeps me going."
That it was Paymah, 25, who was tapped to start at corner opposite Dre Bly, initially was surprising considering rookie Jack Williams had supplanted Paymah as the nickel corner after three games, relegating Paymah's role primarily to special teams. It was Williams who initially replaced Bailey after the stalwart was injured in the first half against New England on Oct. 20.
Paymah said he spoke to coaches after Williams' promotion, promising them he was committed to doing whatever they wanted in order to get back on the field.
"I just had to have a good attitude through the whole process and let them know I wanted to get back out there, let them know I wanted to help the team out however I can and I wanted to be in Denver," said Paymah, who is in the final year
Denver's Karl Paymah, playing against San Diego's Chris Chambers this season, has the speed to keep up with top wide receivers. (Steve Nehf, The Denver Post)
of his four-year contract. "So I think they believe that and they gave me another shot."
Broncos defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, who coached the defensive backs from 2005-07, said Paymah moved back ahead of Williams through his work in practice.
"The biggest thing is that he never got down, he kept practicing hard, trying to get better and waiting for his next opportunity, which is here," Slowik said.
Also in Paymah's favor is that his strength is in man-to-man coverage, where he can use his combination of size and speed against the opposition's better receivers. At 6-feet and 195 pounds, Paymah is the biggest of Denver's healthy corners and the closest in build to Bailey, who is 6-0 and 192 pounds and is consistently mentioned as being the team's fastest player.
"I'm the kind of guy that when he has his head right can be one of the best guys out there, the most dominant," Paymah said. "But it's more mental, just knowing what you've got to do and going out and executing. I feel that's the only thing that's holding me back."
Playing well against Miami would be just the boost Paymah needs, even if being asked to replace Bailey seems to be an impossible task.
"He's been out there in game situations, and he's played well," coach Mike Shana-han said of Paymah. "He had a little bit of a rough preseason, but he's made some plays since he's been here, and we're counting on him playing well this game."

His time has come
Cornerback Karl Paymah is the only member of the 2005 draft class still on the Broncos' roster. He is expected to make his first start of the season Sunday against Miami in place of Champ Bailey. Paymah had two interceptions in 2007.
PAYMAH'S VITALS
Age: 25
Height/weight: 6-feet, 195 pounds
College: Washington State
How acquired: Third-round draft pick by Denver in 2005, No. 76 overall
Experience: 51 games, three starts
2008 stats: Eight total tackles (three on special teams), one pass defense

I'm extremely hopeful the reps in practice and maybe a game plan that can assist deficiencies will elevate his play substantially this week.

In all honesty, his best chance to shine is in tight, physical man coverage. He's just not a zone cushion guy.
Hopefully, they let him play to his strengths and he might just make something happen.

Over/under on number of penalties Paymah commits this weekend 2.5
I'm taking the over.
I like how these pieces always spin it as positively as they can. Its like theyre always, such and such is ready to answer the call. Its always, the starter is a great player (which is sometimes debatable) and it will be hard but Im willing to give it a shot. Where is the follow up piece when they were clearly not ready to answer the call?

Look at it this way, Paymah isn't replacing Champ. Bly is actually replacing Champ and Paymah is replacing Bly.

I'll stand by that .... with the "terrible ball recognition" proviso.
Think about it ... get a mental picture of when the flags fly at Brother Paymah ... he's always right on the receiver - body to body - he just never seems to know where the ball is. Half his flags would've never have been thrown if he swung his neck around toward the ball a time or two.

Shanny should do the 'Chase and Tackle' drill with Paymah in training camp next year and the year after that.
His awareness is his biggest problem, but with his size and speed he can be molded into an elite corner if we could get a gold on all-madden a couple of years in a row with him.

I don't think it's that he is a crappy player as much as he's being used in a way that doesn't suit him. He's similar to Bly as he's a very physical corner yet they are being forced to play off the receiver. Last year when we were playing Bates' scheme and the corners were being aggressive, Bly and Paymah were playing really well.

with no safety help to speak of I'm afraid what press coverage would bring. It's really hard to scheme a defense that has as many weak players as the Broncos do.

Whats to fear? Its not like whats happening now is stopping anything. Yeah, we'd give up more big plays but we'd also have a better chance at creating turnovers. As it is now, theyre on pace to give up more yardage than any Broncos defense in history...and with 2 INTs after 7 games--one coming from a DT and one on a controversial play in that SD game. And youre defending this scheme. Unbelievable! I cant believe youre such a Slowik apologist.

Here's the quote of the day:
"He's a field general," Broncos safety Marquand Manuel said. "You have to go out there and play ball and understand he's going to make the correct throws. You've got to cut down on the (after-catch) yards."
So, hey..eh, Marquand....do you think that...just maybe...you could try to knock the ball down or even....hey what do you think....eh, intercept it?
Just a thought.

I'm not really a Slowik guy. I would love a more proven D coach. I just think Broncos talent wise on defense the worst I have ever seen the team.
I record the games watch one or 2 players per play. Then rewind watch another player etc etc. When I do that on the defense I see some bad things. I watch players being dominated physically. So many of them seem to get pushed around or easily blocked that I wonder if any scheme or coach would make us much better.
I'm not a Slowik apologist. I'm saying I'm not in the meetings at practice getting the type of information that would let me make a decision on Slowik.
I haven't read any articles about him that would let me see how other NFL experts I admire think about his scheme. When I get more information I will then decide what I think about Slowik.
