ABC:
Obama told ABC News' Charlie Gibson that he didn't have a list of people he wanted to bring into the government but said "I've got some pretty good ideas about the senior Cabinet of government officials that I think could perform very well for the country. ... I have a good idea of who the candidates would be."
Obama said he would reach across the aisle on a range of issues, from energy independence to health care to education.
"On a whole host of these issues, I think we need Republicans, not just as show pieces," Obama told Gibson. "In some cases, Republicans have good ideas. And, you know, I've always been more than happy to steal good ideas from whatever the source."
The genius of Abraham Lincoln was that even after a bruising primary and general election that was rough even by today's Rovian standards, he brought into his cabinet many of his political opponents. Unlike George Bush who insulated himself with "yes men", Lincoln understood the importance of hearing all sides of an issue, even if he disagreed. That's an important quality we should all look for in a President. The ideological blindness with which decision were made under George Bush couldn't prove that point any stronger.
For more on the genius of Lincoln, check out Doris Kearns Goodwin's fabulous book, "Team of Rivals."

Hopefully, he plucks a couple of Senate Republicans from states with Democratic governors.
Then those governors can replace them with Democrats and pad the Dem majority. :~ohyah!:

Dang Spider, I thought you meant he was going to hide them in cabinets or something. So disappointing.
Seriously, putting aside my tendency to be extraordinarily flippant, while I applaud the idea of reaching out and working with both sides (which has to be done if anything is going to be accomplished) he isn't the only candidate to say and do that. Technically John McCain has done that and claims that too. I mean I am not criticizing it, I just don't think it is all that novel a concept.

I bet only puts on Republican on and that could be Chuck Hagel. LOL at the notion any adversaries will make Obamas cabinet.
I can't believe the BS people will accept from Obama. There is no way he is going to raise revenue and cut tax, pay for healthcare reform, more money for education, keep paying the dems beloved welfare, fight in Afghanistan etc.
Now he is going to put Republicans on his cabinet? yeah right why would he want to do that? Maybe 1 token repub and thats about it.
You just won't raise as much as you think by taxing the rich. They will simply defer money into tax free shleters. The only way to raise money in the USA is to tax the middle class, and the upper middle class.

Yes well not much I can say about the last 8 years that are positive. So yes, if you can get a President, not just senators reaching across the aisle, then it is probably novel. All I am saying is that McCain makes that same claim all the time, reaching across the aisles. We will see if it makes any kind of significant difference from the President. I truly hope so, but I tend to be a little unsure as to whether that will really happen.

He took on Biden. Surrounding yourself with those who see thing different then you is a great way to lead. Who needs to hear their own opinion thrown at them when they have a problem?

Yeah yeah yeah. Even Bush had a token dem in his cabinet. This isn't highlighting any sort of qualification for president. It will not be a high level position unless its Hagel for SoD.
Obama is about as far left as it gets. McCain is the centrist. He wanted a dem on the ticket for chrissakes.

Actually, when it comes to tax policy (which seems to be #1 on you righties' list of priorities) Obama is WAY to the right of Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford (if you're even old enough to recognize those names.)

I was going to say George Bush than I remembered he needed to be told by Cheney what his opinion was first.

That is why Obama is going to close the tax loop holes, so the rich don't keep cheating the system. He's already said he is going to revise many of the programs in place so they are more efficient and stopping this useless occupation in Iraq is gonna save 10 billion a month (some experts say even more then that). Why don't you add up the total amount spent on Iraq over these past few years and tell me it was worth it. That's a load of BS and everbody who has half a brain knows it.
Why should we keep giving large companies all these tax breaks? All they do is ship jobs over seas, lay people off and cut benefits of the workers. But do you think the CEO's suffer? No, as long as they make theirs, everything is good.
I can't remember the name of the program regarding working VISA's but Gates basically lies out his teeth and says he can't find enough skilled american workers so he brings in guys from india working for pennies and then there are no checks to even make sure these people leave the country when their working VISA's expire. And Gates has the nerve to threaten the US that he will take his company out of the country. Go ahead Gates do it. Then we can ban his products here and let's see how much he makes without Americans buying his products. One of the richest men in the world and he still wants to get labor for pennies. That is the problem with all of these rich punks and their companies. Greed. No amount is enough for them.

Great rant I agree 100%
Can somebody post up the numbers regarding the richest 5% of american's. I think it was something like they earn 40% of the countries revenue. But it's the millions of us working class who are struggling to keep food on the table and pay bills and McCain doesn't think he should give us any help. No tax cut. He'd rather add to that 40% and hope some of that trickles down.
If it's not obvious by now it never will be. The problem with trickle down economics is that the rich people are greedy. They don't want anything to trickle down. A perfect example of that would be Microsoft getting a tax break and then Gates would hire more American workers. There you go, it trickles down. But what does Gates do instead, he goes and gets cheap labor over seas. See, there you have it. Big rich company gets tax break to help give them more revenue and nothing trickles down.

The BBC reported startling economic equality figures in a recent documentary: the top 200 wealthiest people in the world control more wealth than the bottom 4 billion. But what is more striking to many is a close look at the economic inequality in the homeland of the "American Dream." The United States is the most economically stratified society in the western world. As THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reported, a recent study found that the top .01% or 14,000 American families hold 22.2% of wealth — the bottom 90%, or over 133 million families, just 4% of the nation's wealth.

You're one of those people that even when you make a point, you feel the need to incorporate some sort of weak insult. I like the mane for politics because there are plenty of left leaning posters who don't insert [bush insult] + [personal insult] + [stupid smiley] on every single post, and can have a pretty good dialogue with the other aisle. But you, LABF, are a major league douchemanzadeh.

W*GS with the ultimate pot/kettle/blackism.
When it comes to personal insults, W*GS is the reigning champ.
I don't level personal insults in virtually all my posts, as you do, LABF.
On the other hand, as far left as you are, everyone else here is to your right, so your views on left vs. right are tainted, to say the least.
I think Colin Powell will have some form of advisory role. Probably not a cabinet position, but he'll be involved at least as it pertains to getting out of Iraq. I get the strong impression Powell wants to clean up the mess he was manipulated into helping start.
Chuck Hagel and Dick Lugar would both be obvious candidates. Wouldn't be surprised if one of them got the sec. of defense position. Obama has always been an across the isles guy though, just as long as the person on the other side of the isle understood how much of a jackass Bush, Cheney, and Rove where. Intelligent republicans have always found a friend in Obama, even dating back to when he was part of the Illinois state senate.

Um, sorry to burst yet another myth, but Bush did not just have a bunch of republicans in his cabinet. In fact, he kept many of Clintons cronies in places, especially the CIA and other positions relating to foreign policy and many would argue led to the problems of leaks since many of them did not agree with Bush's policies on anything. It would be nice if the Bush whackers read something other than lefty sites and blogs to get "facts" once in awhile at least.

Francis ***uyama Endorses Obama (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/30/francis-***uyama-endorses_n_139139.html)
Francis ***uyama, the prominent academic and an early intellectual defender of neoconservatism, endorses Barack Obama (http://www.amconmag.com/article/2008/nov/03/00020//) in the pages of the American Conservative magazine:I'm voting for Barack Obama this November for a very simple reason. It is hard to imagine a more disastrous presidency than that of George W. Bush. It was bad enough that he launched an unnecessary war and undermined the standing of the United States throughout the world in his first term. But in the waning days of his administration, he is presiding over a collapse of the American financial system and broader economy that will have consequences for years to come. As a general rule, democracies don't work well if voters do not hold political parties accountable for failure. While John McCain is trying desperately to pretend that he never had anything to do with the Republican Party, I think it would a travesty to reward the Republicans for failure on such a grand scale. McCain's appeal was always that he could think for himself, but as the campaign has progressed, he has seemed simply erratic and hotheaded. His choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate was highly irresponsible; we have suffered under the current president who entered office without much knowledge of the world and was easily captured by the wrong advisers. McCain's lurching from Reaganite free- marketer to populist tribune makes one wonder whether he has any underlying principles at all.
***uyama's undergone a shift in recent years, notably declaring the death (http://thinkprogress.org/2006/02/20/the-death-of-neoconservatism/) of his own neoconservative movement in a 2006 essay.
