Ivory from 10,000 elephants on sale amid fears of new slaughter
(Martin Harvey/NHPA/Photoshot)
Conservationists are dismayed that a total of 108 tonnes of ivory will be auctioned to Far Eastern buyers ? the equivalent of 10,000 dead elephants

Jonathan Clayton, Africa Correspondent
Ivory went on sale legally yesterday for the first time in almost a decade when the southern African state of Namibia auctioned seven tonnes of elephant tusks exclusively to Chinese and Japanese buyers.

The much criticised sale, which raised $1.18 million (£743,000), heralded two weeks of rolling auctions that will put 108 tonnes of ivory — the equivalent of more than 10,000 dead elephants — under the hammer in a one-off sale to the Far East, where the product is used mainly in traditional medicines and for official seals to stamp formal documents.

Wildlife groups and other African nations fear that the controversial sell-off could breathe life back into the ivory trade, banned in 1989, and trigger a resurgence of the poaching that devastated Africa’s elephant populations in the 1970s and 1980s.

Julian Newman, campaigns director with the Environmental Investigation Agency, said that the move could once again open the floodgates to poaching, which reduced Africa’s total elephant population from five million in the 1930s to about 600,000 today. “This [auction], coupled with a lack of sufficient checks in importing countries such as China and instability in some African range states, could easily drag us back to the dark and bloody days of the 1980s when we were seeing around 200 elephants killed by poachers each week.” Conservationists argue that a lack of proper oversight will allow poachers to mix illegal and legal ivory and slip it past regulators, many of them corrupt.

Michael Wamithi, director of the elephant programme at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said: “Both China and Japan have been approved as trading partners for this ivory and are known to be among the world’s largest illegal ivory markets. Considering the level of elephant poaching occurring today, allowing this exorbitant amount of ivory to flood the market is just plain irresponsible.”

Four southern African countries — Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, where elephant populations are healthy — have been authorised by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to hold the sales.

The proceeds will go into elephant conservation projects or those aimed at improving conditions for the often extremely impoverished communities around the edges of elephant ranges, which see little benefit from the money brought in by Western tourists.

The sale — the first since 1999 — was approved in principle in 2002. Last year’s CITES meeting in The Hague agreed that enough precautions had been taken to enable the auction to go ahead with Japan as the sole buyer. This year, it was agreed that China had taken sufficient action against the illegal trade to be included.

The convention argues that data showed that the 1999 sale did not boost poaching and brought in $5 million to help with managing southern Africa’s growing population of about 312,000 elephants.

Traffic, a wildlife trade watchdog, says it has confidence in the auctions which, after Namibia, will move every three days through Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, which plans to sell a record 53 tonnes.

David Newton, Traffic’s regional representative in South Africa, said: “As far as we are concerned it is a well-managed process. We are always urging caution and the ivory trade needs to be very strictly monitored; we are confident the monitoring mechanisms are in place.”

William Wijnstekers, the CITES general secretary, will visit all four countries to supervise the sales and meet Chinese and Japanese representatives about monitoring the ivory after the sale.

Actually the planet is perfectly fine. It doesn't care. Life will go on with or without us. We may affect the life that is currently on the planet with us but in the grand scheme of things what we do to the earth is completely irrelevant to the planet. We shouldn't be out to save the planet. The planet is fine. We should be out to save ourselves.

Fish in trees and elephant-sized squid - the future as seen on TV

By Ciar Byrne, Media Correspondent

Humans have been wiped out and the planet is roamed by squid the size of elephants and giant rodents as large as sheep. This is the strange vision of Earth in millions of years, created in a new BBC television series.

Humans have been wiped out and the planet is roamed by squid the size of elephants and giant rodents as large as sheep. This is the strange vision of Earth in millions of years, created in a new BBC television series.

The BBC is hoping its £5m series, The Future Is Wild, will reproduce the phenomenal success of its prehistoric epic, Walking With Dinosaurs, which had 17 million viewers when it was shown in 1999.

A team of 15 scientists took four years to make the 13-part series, which uses computer-generated images to explore the development of the Earth over the next 200 million years. The show, to be shown on BBC2 this autumn, has already proved a ratings success in the US where it was made. "Scientists believe that over 200 million years all the continents will move together into one big landmass, so Antarctica will move nearer to the equator and turn into rainforest," said John Adams, the independent producer who devised the concept seven years ago.

"Birds will have disappeared and fish will fill the airspace; not like today's flying fish but fish that have developed wing muscles and live above the ocean and in forest environments."

Another of the series' creations is an eight-ton squid the size of an elephant that can walk on land. When The Future Is Wild was shown in the US, it doubled the previous record ratings for the Animal Planet channel, owned by the Discovery Communications cable giant. Broadcasters in Germany, Spain and Japan have also bought the series.

"Broadcasters who bought The Future Is Wild had also been involved in Walking With Dinosaurs," Mr Adams said. "It's a similar subject area and it's part of the same overall story.

"It's entertaining and stimulating, but it's also educational. We did a presentation to headteachers and they loved it because it's inspiring for the kids. It's not only public service broadcasting, it's what television should be about." A book of the series, which has already been published in 18 languages, goes on sale in Britain this year. Mr Adams' production company, The Future Is Wild Ltd, is now working on spin-offs, including a dedicated children's series with human time travellers, several proposals for feature films and joint ventures with theme parks throughout the world.

You mean domesticate the elephant?

It took humanity thousands of years to domesticate dogs, and that was even after they had developed a symbiotic (one could say parasitic) relationship with us.

There have been extensive efforts to domesticate cheetahs, tigers, and even reindeer without much success. If an animal doesn't need you to survive its pretty hard to have a direct impact on its breeding habits.

Only problem with that is that they had the 8 ton elesquid walking around with legs comprised of entirely muscles wrapped around each other. No skeletal structure. I don't know who came up with that idea but it's a little absurd.

In Asia, about the only elephants left are domesticated elephants.
Most, if not all, of the wild ones have been killed off.
These are the smaller Indian elephants, which are a different species

Well part of it also depends on the animal and the time frame. It's going to take a long time to bread out the instinct and aggression of those big cats. They take a long time between generations to make it a fast process. The Russians however did have pretty good success with fox. The interesting thing about the domesticated fox though was that it turned them silver. I think there are still a few hundred alive but most were destroyed when the Soviet government and it's funding went down the tubes.

Okay and you can easily find websites listing Pedophiles in the Democratic party if you want (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1980959/posts).

Last I checked pedophilia had nothing to do with what party you were affiliated with unless NABMLA has suddenly gotten someone on the ticket. As far as I am concerned, regardless of party affiliation, the only good pedophile is a dead or imprisoned one. I have a very low tolerance for dirtbags who destroy children.

Admittedly FreeRepublic not my first choice for valid source of information. Hard to be more biased then they are, but the list on there actually had links to at least a few reputable news sources.

As for the thread, I did see Spider's stuff and I am not arguing that there aren't republican pedophiles (and his list was considerably longer then the one I found for democrats), but I don't believe there is a direct correlation between being a Republican and being a pedophile. Nor do I believe there is one between any party and pedophilia.

What you might be able to argue is that there are places much easier for pedophiles to hide or seek express their repugnant urges in (e.g. Scoutmasters have access to children, teachers do, Catholic Priests, and the like).

The list appears to be longer no doubt, but that doesn't necessarily mean the correlation you seem to be indicating. I am just guessing it's like anything, when someone is in denial of who they are and what they are doing they go to the opposite extreme and try to be everything people expect of them. The conservative or Republican party is a beard for them to hide behind. Nobody would expect a Republican senator to be gay and having an affair with someone in their office. Like any other sociopath they try to fit in and what better beard then being a part of a very conservative party that hates the things they really are.

First of all, no matter what happens, the earth will not be around in 100 million years. There is scientific proof that the moon moves further away from the earth every year. There is no stopping it. Once it is far enough away, the weather on the earth will be so catastrophic almost nothing could survive. Then as it continues to pull yet even further away, something about the rotation of the earth and it not having a moon to balance it will start to fall apart. There was a good documentary on this.

Man has to find it's way into space or it's doomed.

The earth will be around, with life on it, for a lot longer than 100 millions
years. I'm not sure where you read this, but the moon certainly isn't going
to be that much further away in 100 million years. The moon was formed
4.5 billion years ago when a planet the size of mars collided with the earth.
10% of the resulting debris from the collision was tossed into space and
this debris condensed into the moon. As the tidal forces interacted
between to earth and the moon is caused the earth's rotation to slow
down, (the days got longer) and to conserve angular momentum the
orbit of the moon is getting bigger. But not at a rate the the moon
will be lost in a mere 100 million years. 100 million years is a mere
2% of the earth's history.
