View Full Version : General NFL Question: How Is Draft Order Determined?

This is kind of an off-shoot of the "Will a sub-.500 record win the AFC West" thread.
Say the Broncos go 8-8 and win the West. And say another AFC team went 9-7 or 10-6 and missed the playoffs.
How does the draft order work? I think there was an issue with this a year or two ago, but I don't remember, where some team either got jobbed or really got helped because of a technicality.
Is it purely record? I want to say it is. But I'm not sure.

Basically if we go 8-8 and win the SB we get the 32nd draft pick, if we go 8-8 and lose in the first round, we finish technically ahead of the other WC team if they lose and behind the one that beat us.

Final Finish.
Nope only slots 31 and 32 are determined by final finish. All the rest are based on regular season records w/ the first tiebreaker strength of schedule.

Naturally if we win the West w/ a 8-8 record (and don't advance to the Super Bowl) and say Jax misses the playoffs at 10-6 we would pick before Jax and after SD, KC, and Oak because we won the division.

Ok what if everybody in the NFL has a record of
0-0-16 How the hell will they figure out who goes to the playoffs or not?
Now answer that question :)

They use other tiebreaker stuff as well. If two teams finish 9-7, one was a playoff team and one wasn't, the non-playoff team goes first.
In your 0-0-16 scenario, there would still have been playoff teams determined by total points, coin tosses, etc.
Then, that would split the group some, then since conference and divisional records, along with strength of schdule were all the same, they would use coin tosses among the non-playoff teams to determine order, and then coin tosses among the playoff teams (not including SB teams) to determine the order of the playoff teams.
That's how draft order would be determined if all 32 teams went 0-0-16

I'm more of a smart ass, but they are somewhat similar. ;)

The Chiefs would some how find a way to lose a game somewhere and be out of the playoff hunt and the Chargers would be the best 0-0-16 team ever in the history of not just the nfl but the world.
