The power went out last night...very windy and snowy here...and my desktop, even though I had it plugged into a surger won't powerup. No light when I hit the button on the PC...any ideas? (I left it on last night) The Printer and the Monitor seem fine. They both have power.

Another question...if I can't get the desktop working...how does that affect my laptop with a wireless router/modem?
Usually, if my wireless goes out, it goes out on both and I fix it through the desktop.

P.S. Shhhh Popps...go drink a beer and watch the games ;D

The monitor, printer and pc are all plugged into a surger...the monitor and printer seem fine. I've used the printer. I tried plugging it into just the outlet and still no power on the pc.

Not sure about your PC's problem, but it shouldn't affect how your laptop connects to the wireless network.

Hmm...but the router/modem go through the pc...when I had the internet connection go out on the laptop, I had to fix the pc first to get it to work. But now no PC.

If you are lucky just the power supply on the PC will be blown, if you are unlucky it's the motherboard and the PC is essentially dead. Unless you like taking these things apart a bit and replacing the power supply yourself you will have to take it somewhere and have them diagnose it. The good news is that all the data on your hard drive should be recoverable and if you have to buy a new machine you should just be able to put your hard drive into it. There are other ways to transfer the data as well.

As for the wireless set up etc, as long as the router etc. are still working you should be able to do everything from your laptop that you did from your desktop.

UGh....the pc is only a little over a year old.

Have you tried plugging the PC into a different socket? Maybe try a wall socket.

My guess it's the power supply, easy to replace.

Your Wireless Router and Laptop will still be fine, You probably wired it to the desktop, which is the reason you troubleshoot from your desktop. The only thing connecting the Router to the PC is a Cat-5 cable.

For anyone's info!

It was a "static" surge...if you have a light on the back of your tower, but no power...unconnect your power cord from the pc for 15 second and replug it in and it should work!

About time I had good luck with a pc!

The laptop, on the other hand, is a completely different story...although office max told me they would ship it to HP for free even though I didn't buy it there and it should be under warranty!

Sassy I thought the laptop was working fine with the exception of needing to configure it to go through the router directly without having the PC as the middleman?

Nah...I didn't have to do anything with it. But it freezes up when closing out of websites...it got a blue startup issue screen AGAIN after I had restored it to original factory condition. The guy at office max said it would probably get worse and there is no reason a new laptop should do that (I bought it online from HP in June). Basically, I would say it's having windows/internet explorer issues. I have vista...but I never had a problem with Vista on the desktop.

Thats weird that its freezing after you exit the IE or whatever Browser you choose. Do you use IE or something like Firefox?

Hope they fix it for you and if you can ask them to provide you with the Operating System and drivers on disk so its easier to fix in the future.

Dam, does Vista really suck that bad?

Looks like I'll be using XP for a long time to come.

I've had it for a year with no problems.

It's IE...but I have Vista on the desktops and IE and no problems.
The computer guy at Office Max said that HP should replace the laptop.
That once I get a blue screen, it's pretty much going to have problems and it will get worse. So, it sounded to me like it wasn't a very "fixable" problem.
Anyone know anything about this? I have never had a desktop do this...

Vista is a memory hog I will say that, so I upgraded my RAM on my laptop and it runs better. IE is more of a problem. And my antivirus program let in some stuff, but since it was fixed no problems really, knock on wood.

As for getting Vista, I would wait because I understand in the next year or so, Microsoft is supposed to release a new operating system, again. And even then I would wait, the IT guy always says it is better to wait and let them work out the bugs before buying their operating systems immediately.

I love Vista! Most people don't like change and are afraid of making the jump to Vista.

I've had ZERO issues with it.

Although I had a boss who has issues with loading 64 bit Vista with more than 2 gigs of ram. He had to have 2 or less gigs and add the rest after the installation.

I honestly doubt Windows 7 will come out in 2009. I'm expecting 2010 at the earliest.

Basically, you're telling these guys to wait till 2010, MAYBE 2011 to get a new operating system? I certainly wouldn't use Windows 2000 on a daily basis.

Honestly had no idea when it was going to come out. Some IT guy I worked with said it would be next year. However, if people do get Vista now they should bear in mind it will require more then likely an adjustment to other items on their computer as Vista is a memory hog for one thing and it may not be compatible with older systems in some ways. My brother installed it on his comptuer and he has a lot of computer experience and it screwed up his computer.

While officially Microsoft has stated that Windows 7 will be released by January 2010, which is three years after Vista was shipped, the company has indicated that it plans to release Windows 7 in mid-2009, in time for installation in PCs that will ship for the Christmas 2009 buying season
