Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack has two things on his mind this season: Winning the defensive rookie of the year award, and sacking Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning

"I’m looking forward to playing against Peyton Manning,” Mack said. “I think going against the best quarterback in the game right now is going to be a big deal. Especially if you can put him on his back.”

In two wins over the Raiders last year, Manning completed 57 of 65 passes for 640 yards, with seven touchdowns and no interceptions, and he was only sacked twice. The Raiders’ defense has a whole lot of work to do if it wants to stop Manning, but Mack sounds confident that he can help.

Dion Jordan suspended four games for PEDs

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 3, 2014, 4:14 PM EDT
Dion Jordan
AP
Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan bulked up this offseason, and now there may be questions raised about his methods of bulking up.

Jordan has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. The Dolphins have announced the suspension, and although there is no official word on which substance Jordan was found to have taken, he said in a statement that he took a banned stimulant.

“I recently learned from the NFL that I tested positive for stimulants that are banned under the NFL policy,” Jordan said. “I worked carefully with my advisors and the union to investigate the test results, and I take full responsibility for the test results. I’m very sorry for the impact of this situation on my teammates, coaches, Stephen Ross, the entire Dolphins organization, fans and my family as well. I will continue to work extremely hard during training camp and preseason. During the suspension, I will stay in top shape and will be ready to contribute upon my return.”

If it’s after 4 p.m. the day before a holiday weekend, it’s time for the NFL bad news dump.

The latest is Colts wide receiver LaVon Brazill, who was suspended for at least a year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Brazill was previously suspended the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the same policy.

He joins Rokevious Watkins and Dion Jordan in today’s suspension-before-fireworks parade.

Strangely, we still haven’t heard anything about Jim Irsay.

Tanard Jackson suspended by NFL
Updated: July 9, 2014, 6:03 PM ET
By John Keim | ESPN.com

The NFL suspended Redskins safety Tanard Jackson again for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The indefinite suspension, the second one he has received since 2012, will begin immediately, the NFL announced.

Redskins safety Tanard Jackson's suspension for violating the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse is sad because of all the second chances he has blown, writes John Keim. Story

It's the fourth time he's been suspended since joining the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick in 2007. And it's the third time he has received at least a one-year suspension. He was suspended twice in Tampa Bay, the second time for a year.

Then, on Aug. 31, 2012, Jackson, who was in line to start for the Redskins, was suspended indefinitely. He was reinstated earlier this offseason after missing two seasons.

"A lifestyle change is necessary anytime you're in a position like that," Jackson said in May.

He called his 2012 suspension and subsequent absence from the game a "humbling experience."

"It was something I did and something I had to face the consequences for. I like to put it behind me," Jackson said. "It wasn't hard to grasp that I put myself in this position and I need to work and if wanted it back it was going to take some work."

When Jackson returned, the coaches were upbeat, although several in the organization cautioned about expecting a whole lot from him. He was clearly behind Ryan Clark on the depth chart at free safety. As spring practices unfolded, their praise of Jackson was more muted.

For the second consecutive year, the NFL supplemental draft did not have a player selected.

Last year, 32 NFL teams passed on six eligible candidates for the supplemental draft. This year, teams elected not to use a draft choice on four candidates.

The four players were New Mexico wide receiver/running back Chase Clayton, North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford, Virginia Lynchburg defensive tackle LeKendrick Ross and SMU running back Traylon Shead. They now become free agents who can sign with any team.

The last time a player was taken in the supplemental draft was 2012. The Cleveland Browns used a second-round choice to select wide receiver Josh Gordon.

CB Smith 5th Raven arrested this offseason

Ravens (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/bal/baltimore-ravens) cornerback Jimmy Smith (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13963/jimmy-smith) was arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct late Saturday night after an alleged incident at suburban Baltimore bar.

Smith, 25, is the fifth Ravens player arrested this offseason.

Police said Smith was helping an intoxicated woman in the bathroom of a Towson, Maryland bar when she because nauseated. After medics arrived, officers repeatedly asked Smith to step aside and he allegedly refused to comply, saying several times that he was helping the woman.

Smith became argumentative when they asked him to step into the hallway, according to police. Police said Smith was cooperative with officers after being arrested.

Walter footballs scouting report. Pretty good on noting there could be motivation issues.

Summary: Marcell Dareus might wind up being the best defensive lineman in a draft crop littered with top talent. Coming out of Nick Saban's 3-4 defense, he is ready for the NFL although he only started four games in 2009 and was suspended for two in 2010 so he is light on experience. His family life has been hard and teams will have to be sure he is still motivated to work hard after getting paidAssuming he clears that hurdle, teams can either use him as a 3-4 end or possibly a nose tackle.

It has nothing to do with practicing throwing. He's done that quite a bit as well. It's his ability (or lack of) to read and process a defense effectively.

Kaylore

Tebow was a great college QB.. but most people who watched him that were SEC fans knew he would be lacking in the NFL..He could run the ball pretty well but he needed a big seam down the middle..kind of like Rothesenburger however you spell it..smile..except Ben is a lot bigger and a lot harder to take down..same thing is going to happen to Manizel..he's a scrambler but these NFL men are going to eat him for lunch..I do think Manizel is a more accurate passer then Tebow was..:egbgb:

This isn't true. Tebow threw quite a few different patterns. He threw for 88 TD's against 16 interceptions for his career. And those weren't just a bunch of seam and post routes - especially in the red zone. The problem was his reads were pre-designed so he always knew where to look when it was a designed throw. He had one read and if it was there he could dump it or run. FWIW Tebow has a higher QB rating than Manziel.

They are both young and talented....one of them will pan out.

They drafted them to eventually replace Marshawn Lynch.

My point is that Skittles is 28 years old with close to 2,000 NFL touches....he's looking for one last big payday as he closes in on 30 years old and I doubt Seattle will give him the money he's looking for.

Ideally, Seattle would love to have Marshawn Lynch play out the last two seasons on his deal and wear him into the ground those two years to get everything out of him and then hand things over to their other talented younger backs.

Why are we playing the Patriots in New England again this year..doesn't the NFL rotate from one year to the next?

Depends on why we are playing them. There is a rotation for cross division play on the 3 year cycle, which is why we are playing them this year. In 2011 we played them at home. We played them last year because it was one of our intra-conference match-ups based on the previous year's results. There are a ton of logistics that go into the location of those games.

Meh, this doesnt have much affect with it, i dont think.

It's under 10 mil a year.

I doubt Elway is offering DT, 10 mil a year.

It will probably cost 11-13.5 mil a year per year at least.

But it is a little frustrating other teams are signing some of their players to extensions and nothing has happened with DT/JT, yet, shrugs.

Pete Carroll on Marshawn Lynch's holdout: 'It's a contract for a reason'

RENTON, Wash. – Two or three years down the line, Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas might feel much like Marshawn Lynch does now: underpaid on a contract that once helped set the market with multiple years to go.

Lynch began his holdout Friday in hopes the Seattle Seahawks will upgrade his deal, which has two years and $13 million remaining. But the precedent such an upgrade would set is perhaps the most important reason the Seahawks don't seem interested in appeasing their star running back with more money.

"It's a contract for a reason. We made a decision and it was signed, by us and by them," Carroll told USA TODAY Sports after the Seahawks' first training camp practice. "We expect them to honor their contract just as we will. We're going to honor it and we expect them to do the same. …

"We've had a big plan for a long time working here, and Marshawn is a huge part of that plan, and we made a huge commitment to him a couple years ago. He remains a big part of that plan – if he'll show up. The same thing will carry over to Doug (Baldwin) and Richard and Earl and Kam (Chancellor) and all of the guys that have signed with us."

Carroll said he doesn't have any idea when or if Lynch might show up. He faces a $30,000 fine for each day he misses and partial signing bonus forfeiture if his absence reaches six days.

he has no point. teams don't honor contracts at all. how many players play out the entirety of their deal?

the second a player is even marginally overpaid or the team in question has cap problems, the contract is torn up and the player is released or renegotiated. that happens far more often than a player holding out and getting a raise. but teams can easily pull out the "it's a contract" card whenever they want, because fans are much more likely to side with the team, whose interests align with their own, than they are to side with a player.

Marshawn has had his seven years. That's when a RB starts seeing the end of the road, and the teams starting thinking about it was well. No position rougher than RB. You bust ass for seven years then they boot you to the curb and drop in another 21 year old. No mercy. I can't blame Lynch for looking for a payday, and I can't blame the Seahawks for thinking twice. It's amazing how devalued the position has become over a short span of years, and all due to the league ****ing with the rules.

This is the way I see it. FO sits down with the agent and hammer out a deal. It's so much for so many years at this rate and with this amount fully guaranteed. The part of the contract either side really cares about is the guaranteed money. What both parties are agreeing on is really two agreements one hard and fast (guaranteed) and the other is negotiable for either side. If the team doesn't see the value they can cut player and his expense, the player can refuse to play until he is cut and shop his services elsewhere. Management does have a weighted advantage but that is the way it is and everyone knew that going in. Carroll's point is the team does not want to re negotiate because that would become the norm. other players would expect the same treatment. Management knows it can not rut a business that when you are working under a cap.He is stating what the Seahawks Policy is and why.

A club could have an express policy not to renegotiate in the middle of contracts. Player A is the only marquee player on the team because it's not a desirable place to play. He is the most important factor in winning and puts people in seats. He decides to hold out and incur fines.

Team policy or not they will ultimately agree to give him more.

I'm not debating the right or wrong of the situation, life is not fair. I'm saying the Seahawks have the right to not renegotiate his contract. I'm also agreeing they have a legitimate reason for not doing it.

Yes, the Seahawks have a right to refuse to renegotiate and can also cut a player at any time having to pay sums only guaranteed in the deal......and the player also has the right to hold out and not report so long as he is willing to live with the fines permitted under the CBA.

So in other words the simplistic "a contract is a contract" nonsense that Carroll is peddling (and he's peddled a lot of nonsense in his years) is completely untrue here.

James has always been mediocre at best. He and Hillman are basically the same. Honestly, old man Gore is still the only proven back they have. Hunter is decent but hurt and the other guys are total unknowns. Their depth is okay but nothing I'm sitting back and envying.

I absolutely think Bailey has plenty left in the tank.

The best argument for letting him go wasn't that he was no longer capable of playing good football, but that his body was no longer capable of allowing him to. Hopefully he stays healthy and we find out who was right about his abilities. I won't be surprised if he has a very solid year for them, and am prepared to hate every minute of it.

Lattimore is not recovering from the knee injury as the team had hoped and I still do not know why Hyde was rated as highly as he was coming out.

But I do agree with your general point that the RB depth is lacking in Denver.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like Lattimore will ever be the player he once was (which is a tragedy, had he not blown out his knees, he was likely the next AP), but I think they feel that Hyde is a quality replacement for Gore (since he is 31) on a team predicated on bulldozing the football.

Clary is on the PUP and will probably miss a good number of games. Either Rich Ornburger or Chris Watt (3rd round rookie) will probably be the starting RG.

Clary is a decent player (much better as a guard than a RT) but Watt is clearly the future, if he pans out. Clary was going to be asked to take a pay cut this year anyway, injured or not.

99.9% of the time the second hand smoke argument is probably bull****....but when it's for a low amount like Gordon tested positive for, it's possible it occurred from second hand smoke, according to some scientific studies.

How valid those studies are, I don't know.

You're just trolling now because I don't think you're really this stupid. You do know the Sonics now play in OKC, AND your awesome 12th man Seahawks almost moved to L.A. back in 1996. Nothing but fairweather fans in Seattle.

You realize how many starters were out during the SB.

Would have been a totally different game if you were without at least 6 of your starters on D.

Denver gets Von Miller, Chris Harris, Ryan Clady (who will stop your pass rush), Derek Wolfe, Raheem Moore back into their starting jobs then we added Ware, Talib, and Ward. We will be just as physical as you and the 49er's if not more and we have the better O which also upgraded with guys like Sanders and our draft pick Latimer for you contend with. Plus there is the fact that the biggest waste of space RB, KM, is gone to the fins where he quickly proved his worth by unimpressing before getting hurt.

You woke a sleeping giant and the next 2 years back to back run will be all the more sweeter because we had to do it the hard way and because we ran into a weak team that was missing half their starters on D.

And Chrissy/Baja penis love permeates several threads a week. Please don't let this troll ruin an epic and critically important thread to the Mane's value. Thanks!

Keep on talking, Hawks fan. You've certainly earned it by winning the trophy, but understand that this team and fanbase just don't care enough about you to give a crap. We've got a division and conference to win before we can even muster some semblance of concern for you big meanies. Sorry, you mad bro?

Odd since just yesterday there was talk of him being a probable starter:
Judging by what I've seen from Bailey this offseason, he seems to be the favorite to win the starting job at cornerback opposite Keenan Lewis. Bailey has seen all of his playing time with the first-team defense through three days of training camp rotating practice reps with Patrick Robinson.

But now this? Sounds like Greg Bedard started the "rumor". But it is believable after what we saw last year.

LOL "Second hand smoke." Good luck with that.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/29/lack-of-hgh-testing-could-contribute-to-gordon-suspension/

Regardless, the NFL’s current limit of 15 ng/ml needs to change, especially since (as pointed out by ESPN’s Bomani Jones) the World Anti-Doping Agency raised its limit by an order or magnitude in 2013, from 15 to 150 ng/ml.

A low limit of 15 ng/ml can be reached via second-hand smoke. As pointed out by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gordon’s appeal also will advance that argument.

If they didn't have the fine structure then there would be nothing for ESPN to fill 2 hours of football talk during late July.
